But sometimes you're just distracted right?
You all have "I was so distracted I did so and so" stories, right???
I'm not sure if I can use the "I was so distracted" defense for this one, but here is a "I don't know where my mind was" story.
We were traveling cross-country and it was the last morning of the last hotel we stayed at. I figured I'd get a jump on things and take my suitcase and a cooler down to the car while other family members were getting ready.
I walked down a long corridor to the elevator, pushed the down button, and got in the elevator. I pushed a button to go down, the doors closed, and I waited...and waited...and waited. The elevator didn't move. I pressed the button that opened the doors, pressed the button that shut the doors, then pressed the down button again. Again, nothing.

I started to worry that the elevator was malfunctioning and that I might get stuck in it or something. So, I got out and walked down four flights of stairs, out to the car, and then back up the stairs to our hotel room.
When I got back to the room, my husband took a few things out to the car. When he returned, I told him that I forgot to tell him not bother with the elevator because it wasn't working. He looked at me like I was crazy, and told me that the elevator worked fine.
My husband had a few business calls to make, so my daughter and I went downstairs to get some breakfast. We got in the elevator (it worked for my husband, so it must be okay) I pressed a button to go down, but nothing happened. It was at that point that it hit me that I had been pressing the button with our floor number on it, NOT the button to go down to the lobby.

I did this not once, but three times.

I started laughing when I realized my stupid mistake. My daughter thought I had completely lost my mind. By the time the elevator reached the lobby, we were both in stitches. I'm sure everyone in the breakfast room thought we were totally nuts.
Of course, I wasn't going to tell my husband about my brain lapse, but my daughter made sure to relay the story.
