How often do wait lists come through? Is it a total shot in the dark?
I just bought into AKV and was wondering how often a waitlist will acctualy cough up a reservation?

Whooo hoooo! I just had the same experience. I was on the waitlist for one night mid-trip. There was NO way I was checking into BCV, checking into SSR the next and back to BCV the rest of the stay. Nothing was open at BW, AKL, VWL, etc. I was prepared to cancel and low and behold, I checked the DVC website and my one date came through! And this is 2 months ahead of time. Not sure if that is usual or not, but I share the OP's excitement!

We were waitlisted for one of our days for Spring Break (Easter Week) also at BCV and it came through fairly quickly, so that's a good sign right? Or possibly a sign of the bad economy, I'm not sure.
I was on the waitlist about 6 days So I guess that doesn't say much! I suspect the availability at BCV is more related to owners at BCV moving over to BLT or THV at the 7 month mark. That, or there are a lot of cancellations!
Last year, neither of my BCV waitlists came through. What a difference a year makes -- and unfortunately, it's likely due to the economy. I called MS several days ago, expecting to waitlist BCV for my 5 nights for Food&Wine Festival (late Sept/early Oct). There was availability; no need to waitlist!
