YC/BC Std. Room Question

My family and I (DH, DS (2) and me) are planning an 8-day trip in late Aug.--early Sept. and are interested in splitting our stay between WL and the YC/BC. I have stayed at the WL before and feel pretty comfortable making my room requests there, but I do not have that same level of experience with the YC/BC resort and would like some input from others who have stayed there. I have read many posts about this resort, including the comprehensive FAQ post, and I am overwhelmed by the amount of information available. So, my specific questions are:

1. Which of the two has better standard rooms ("Better" meaning nicer views or larger configurations)?
2. Since these resorts seem large, which room area (e.g. near elevator) would you recommend for a family with a small child?
3. Does either resort offer better "quick" food options (I am thinking of something akin to Roaring Forks for quick breakfast foods and snacks) or are the choices roughly equivalent in either resort?
4. Since we have a young child, having a balcony will be important for us while he is sleeping--are there standard rooms at both resorts that offer full balconies or does one resort have an advantage over another in this area?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

This question is kinda tricky... It's hard to really consider YC and BC as two seperate resorts, because (besides decor) they're very similar, almost mirror images of each other. Let's start at the beginning...

1. It depends on your tastes, really. The room sizes in both resorts are basically the same. YC has been completely redone, and they're working on BC right now. We stayed at BC in Jan in a newly redone room and it was *gorgeous*. We weren't disturbed at all by the construction going on elsewhere in the building, but if that's a major concern, then go for YC. YC's decor is much more masculine - shades of navy, gray, gold, cream and brown - while BC's is more feminine - light blues, pinks, yellows, white. Like I said, matter of taste. The only objective thing that would put YC ahead of BC (in my opinion) is the construction; if you want to be as far away as possible, go YC. However, it may be finished by the time you get there in August.

2. I don't really understand this question. Do you want to be near the elevator so you don't have to walk as far, or are you worried that the noise might keep the child awake? Do you want near the quiet pool so you can just run right down there and back? When we went in Jan we were near the quiet pool and it was a nice, short trip down there. However, if you had a room *overlooking* the quiet pool, it might be noisey... despite the name... Maybe you could clarify this question a little and could answer it a bit better. :D

3. This is another question where you don't really need to consider YC and BC as two seperate resorts. The only quick food option is Beaches and Cream, and it's, um... never quick. There's pretty much always a line. There's Hurrican Hannah's at Stormalong Bay, and they're open at lunch w/ hamburgers and hotdogs. At BC there's a takeout area at the Cape May where you can get pastries and coffee and things like that in the morning. At the YC there's the Yachtsman's Galley for dinner, but that's a casual sit-down place. If you mean like a quick, counter-service type place, there really just isn't one.

4. I've heard that YC is better for full balconies, but something like that is more "hope for the best" than anything else. You can request a full balcony, but you might not get one. In Jan at BC both of our rooms had full balconies, but it was the first time I'd had a full balcony at BC, and we've stayed there 3 times.

This post has gotten really long... I hope I've been able to help some, and if you have any more questions, post away! :D

I believe all the rooms at yc have full balconies. Also, the rooms themselves at the yc are nautical blue and white -- definitely not the drab description the resort sometimes gets b/c the lobby has lots of dark wood and is pretty formal looking. Quick food is the problem with these resorts. There is nothing even remotely resembling Roaring Forks. We always keep breakfast food in our room and just deal with it otherwise -- not a perfect solution but we do love the resort.

When I was at the BC such a long time ago, 2 of my children at the time were 4 and 5. The "children's" area of SAB was all the way over by the YC side. It might be easier for you if you plan on using SAB with a small child to stay at the YC instead of the BC.

Thank you for the responses. You have helped clarify the information I read elsewhere.

CoolDisneyCat, in asking my question about a good room location, I was to try to find an area that would be near enough to the center of the resort so that we didn't have an additional 10 minute walk to the far end of the resort (it looks so long on the maps that I've seen) to our room and then back again to the restaurants, SAB, etc. if we could avoid it. I was not thinking so much about noise from the elevator area when I posted the question, but you raise an excellent point. I'd like to be close enough to be convenient, but not so close that we can hear other guests waiting for/coming off the elevator. Is that a little clearer? Was your room overlooking the quiet pool a standard room, or is that considered a water view?

Also, thanks to you and tar heel for clarifying the quick food situation. That is the answer I thought that I would get and I really am only concerned with breakfast. I had planned to keep breakfast-type items in the room b/c my son usually wants to eat his breakfast right away anyway (I only really need coffee and my husband doesn't care for breakfast!).

BarbaraMB, thanks for that tip about SAB. We will definitely be using it if we choose this resort option--it looks awesome. Since my son is small, I would expect that we would utilize the kids area the most.

Our room didn't overlook the quiet pool; it overlooked the lawn, but you could look out and see the lake and the SAB slide. It was a standard view, but the best standard view I've ever had. :)

Ok, now that I understand your question more clearly, BC, for one, is huge. The first time we stayed there we stayed as far away from the lobby as you can possibly get - we were at the very end of the building. While it was a pain getting to the boat dock and the lobby, we were right by the entrance to EPCOT. :)

A more centralized room location would probably be best for someone with young children; it's closer to the restaurants, boat docks, bus stop, etc.

As for being near the kiddie section of SAB... well, ok, I admit I'm a bit biased towards BC. :) But unless you're at the very far end of the building, it's not a long walk from a more centralized room. This last time we stayed there, we were in about the middle of the building, and it was fine. Of course, the youngest child we had was 18... :)

Good luck! :)
