Just had to share my good fortune! We just bought DVC last year for 2 reasons: #1-I love Disney, wanted a "piece" of Disney #2-DH is a Workaholic and we thought this would force him to take vacations ("Well, we already paid for it whether we go or not"). Every year since 1973, it's been "How many days of vacation aren't you using this year?" He would take a day here or there for golf, sometimes a week (if I nagged enough) with me, then give back (he couldn't carry over) about 1/2 of his vacation days at the end of the year. Well, DVC worked! This year DH has only 1 day left after July, and we figure that he'll have used about 4 of 5 weeks on vacations with me this year. And he's already talking about next year! I'm so thrilled-just had to share! And maybe help convince anyone else in a similar position. I must admit that last year I wondered if this would work-can you really change a workaholic's ways after almost 30 years? Yes!

Great news! When I was much younger a senior VP told me that vacations are provided for a reason, use them! I have tried to heed his advice every since and now many years later I concur with his view and pass that counsel on to others.

Here's the really sad way I learned this lesson.

My father, who was a cardiac surgeon, died in Dec, 2000. He was a serious workaholic. He had cancer and was forced to retire in October. After 10 weeks of illness, he passed away - still not officially retired, because he hadn't used up his vacation time from 31 years on the job. After his death, my mother received a check for $38,000. The rest of his vacation pay.

Did I mention that he was 62? I never want that to happen to me.
It's why we said, "dang the torpedos, let's buy them points now."

That was also one of the reasons we bought DVC. I wanted to make sure that we would take a vacation at least one every couple of years.

Simba's Mom .... I was in the same situation for a lot of years. My DW and I would talk about doing a vacation, and before you knew it the summer was over & the kiddies were back at school. :(

Now, thanks to DVC we took a great trip to Beach Club Villas in 2002 and we are heading to Old Key West in July. I love thinking about vacations & can't wait to plan next years trip.

And when doing so, it might as well be first class!!! That's what DVC is for us, first class.

Good for you, Simba's Mom... glad your strategy is working.

In my case, I watched my parents work so hard to prepare for their "Golden years of retirement", then within just a couple years of retiring, my dad started deteriorating with Alzheimers disease. Instead of traveling and enjoying their time together as they had planned, he wasted away and my Mom spent several years caring for him prior to his passing at only 70.

So, while we certainly plan for our retirement, we are not going to defer all our good times 'til "someday". That's why we have DVC!

Same Here. When I married DH 9 years ago (2nd time for both of us) our honeymoon to WDW was the first vacation he had taken in 10 years. I of course, picked the location and planned it.

Three years ago we bought into DVC. Now he is the cheerleader for vacations and especially for DVC. He tells people "that's truly the only place I've been where you can absolutely Forget about work and worries".

We both do better and more efficient work with a few days off for R&R.

My MIL bought into DVC for this same reason. She'd go years without a vacation. Now she's usually got two WDW vacations planned. She and her dh don't do the parks at all though. Just go to relax!

My parents are both retired and they don't need to buy into DVC, we take them every year! At the end of the trip they're asking "same time next year?" After so many years of working hard, they love to be pampered at WDW!

My DH is also a type A personality and SOMETHING would always come up and change our vacation plans. Now that we hae DVC my DH helps make vacation plans and looks forward to time away from work.

Simba's Mom, how fortunate for you & your family! DVC points definitely buy you a yearly vacation! I know your husband had his doubts, concerns, whatever initially, but so glad to know the DVC purchase is working out for your family! And some day you will have daughters-in-law & grandchildren to share DVC!

Simba'sMom that's great news. Just another one of the benefits of DVC that can't be run through a calculator!

We bought in Oct 2001 to force my DH to take prepaid vacations also. We are scheduled to go to HHI in July and hopefully he won't have to fly out early. Someone wants him in meetings 2 days before our departure. Send some pixie dust that he can put them off for 2 days!

We get to take my M&D to WDW for their first time in Oct to enjoy the grandkids, a thanks for being great parents to me!
