about 2 years ago i had my first yard sale and am currently planning my fourth.
i always listed it in friday and saturdays paper, highlighted or boxed if possible
list it on your local craigslist, they have a garage sale category
make big signs on flourescent paper with arrows.
if i do it on a saturday and sunday i find sunday pretty slow, but i do hang signs on the corners by church, lots of people stopped on their way home they told me.
paperbacks 50cents or 3 for $1 in kids
hardcover $1
clothes kids $1 adult $2 coats $5
(make offers of a whole size to someone for more) around here lots of people buy clothes to send to families in other countries . they love to buy all my size 4's for 10 dollars or so (depending on how many pieces)
baby gear is a big seller on average i got about 15-25 for strollers and such
i also find plates, cups, toasters dont sell
but comforters blankets, and curtains and placemats are big sellers
put out the boxes for collectibles if you have them
computers, old cameras, old records, and old jewelery are what early morning buyers inquire about. (if you are going to sell to them -know what they are worth).
i also always have a free box(stuffed animals and mismatched toys)
at the end of the sale i place all stuff i will toss anyway on a table for
a dollar or fill a bag for 5 dollars.
i always start the day with 1 roll of quarters and about 25 dollars in singles
we have done block sales too. the neighbors chip in for the ad, and you have company but you also have more competition. good luck
and my most important yard sale rule is all money made goes in the disney bank
