My sister in law and I are having a yard sale in a few weeks. She really needs to have one, I just like to have them. I started a couple of weekends ago gathering stuff up, and I just don't have that much. And my junk is really junk. If I am going to do this, I want to at least have enough stuff to make it interesting. Here is what I was thinking of: I have hundreds of Iris in my yard that should be blooming. They need divided, and I have nowhere to go with them after I divide them. I was thinking of digging some up the night before (those that are blooming nicely and that I have too many of) putting them in one of those plastic grocery bags that we all have too many of, with the bloom showing out of the top, putting all the bags in a cardboard box so they will stand up, and putting maybe $2.00 on each bag.

Has anybody ever done anything like this? Did it work?

Thanks

I have sold plants that I no longer wanted. People did buy them. Just to let you know - you may think you have a junk, but every year my sister and I have a yard sale. It seems the stuff I think is junk is the stuff that goes first. We also have a box with .25 stuff in it and it is amazing how all the little stuff does add up.

Good Luck with your sale - we are having ours in June.

If I saw them I would buy them. Just make them look nice. We went to the flea market last week to get tons of plants, same idea, they divide theirs, only difference was they had them replanted in super used pots!

I think this is a great idea! I know I would buy plants especially irises. They are my favorites! You will be surprised at what people buy. When we were having a house sale at my gram's someone wanted to buy used deoderant :rotfl2: (trust me it wasn't for sale but the person insisted on buying it) Just remember one persons junk is another man's treasure!

Yes, the junk and I mean junk, goes first. People grab it up!

We are having a community yard sale next weekend and I had read that Lysterine is a known carcinogen and neurotoxin so I was going to throw away my huge slightly used bottle from Sams and I though to myself, gross as it is, and I didn't drink out of it but anyway, someone would love to buy this. It is amazing and gross what some people will buy used!

Definately! I saw someone in our sub do that last year, I would have bought some if I hadn't already spent all my money! Seems like she put them in yogurt, butter, etc., containers.

I love helping with a good yard sale, but am never in an area I can have one.

Presentation will be key with the flowering plants, but yes, they should sell very well. If I were buying I'd prefer to see the plants in a clear bag verses a grocery store one, but it can be done. Try rolling down the edges and tying loosly with string around the base and it should look good.

Remember people are now buying for Mom's day! If you have any unused ceramic pots, bowls or cups or even tins put them next to the flowers, even pop one or two in to give the idea but mark the potted ones a little higher than without being potted to encourage buyers to do it on their own and help sell off the loose items.

You could also set up a quick coloring station where kids can entertain themselves while mom/dad browse by drawing pictures to put on empty soup cans and they can buy the flower to put in it.

I think it is a great idea. I would but them!! I have been to many yard sales where people sell their fresh veggies from their garden.

I've got one that makes the deodorant look like a great find... I was at a yard sale and this lady in front of me bought very old (1950's) and already opened (not sure if used but I am guessing) resusable enema AND douch bags :scared1: .

Ok That takes the cake! GROSS!

Hmmm - you guys are giving me some ideas -- we're having a community yard sale this weekend and I was only going to sell my kids' outgrown clothes and toys. I'm sure DH has a bunch of used deodorant and there's that tube of unused preparation H :rotfl:

Yikes. lol

I think the only gross thing I saw was a porto potty, but it was clean.

I know people use coupons and get freebies, like toothpaste and other toiletries, and they sell them at yard sales.

GL! :wizard:

I've got one for ya. After my Grandmother passed my Dsis and I had a yard sale and we set out all her canned goods and non-perishable foods and sold them all for 5 cents each. Also, she had the worlds largest toilet paper supply and packages of Depends and Packages of full size feminine pads. I put them all in a basket to sell. :rotfl: My DBIL said nobody would buy that stuff. The joke was on him when some ladies came in within thirty minutes after our opening and stood there discussing how great of a find this was and who of their friends it was going to benefit. :rotfl2:

The food stuff sold really quick too and all to the same person. I just couldn't believe someone would bey that crap but it just goes to show that if you set it out someone will buy it. :woohoo:

Will people buy children's clothes? How about used shoes in very good condition?
I was thinking of selling both for a $1

At $1 a piece they will sell, but I suggest $2 a piece as buyers will want to negotiate and feel they're walking away with a deal they made, not you... meinwhile you'll know you got what you wanted for the item ;)
Brand name clothes in excellent condition may sell better on eBay - check first to see that you're not loosing a ton of $.
