Hello everyone! I finally got most of everything together for my sale except for what to call it. I was originally going to put on the flyers a yard sale but after researching it I think I should call it an estate sale. My mom says I should just stick with yard sale.

My sale will include the usual yard sale items like old clothes and shoes for 1- $5. However it will also include a lot of brand new clothes from a very popular store, high priced shoes, and a few Dooney and Bourkes all brand new. I don’t want full MSRP for any of it but I would still like to get 40-50% of the MSRP on the items. In total I probably will have 200 items. Half of the items are the brand new items I was talking about.

I do sell on eBay and other sites. I want to start “thrifting” full time and don’t have any space for new inventory. I get offers daily for stuff that I wouldn’t mind selling at the process if it wasn’t for the ridiculous fees. Which is why I’m having this sale and also to pay for my Disneyland trip lol.

Which name is better?

I wouldn't see these items as either yard or estate sale items.

Yard sales in my experience, people expect something for nothing. They pay pennies on the dollar.

What abt selling your items through Facebook and on line sales. That's more in line with your more expensive type items.

I agree. I would sell your higher end items through your local Facebook marketplace or Craigslist. I know it will take longer than just putting things out in a yard sale, but you’ll make a whole lot more money on them. There is no way you’ll get 50-60% msrp on anything in a yard or estate sale. Sorry. Another option is to rent a table at a local flea market. People expect to pay more there than at soneone’s home. If you don’t want to do any work, you might want to see if there are some consignment shops in your area.

As for your original question, it isn’t an estate sale since you are not selling the contents of a house or the leftovers of someone’s life. I would call it a ‘yard sale’.

Everything you're listing is screams Yard Sale to me. Estate Sales to me signal things you would find in an estate, antiques, furniture, appliances, not new clothing.
Although more than one hard core Yard Sale person I know around here has given up on holding yard sales and switched completely to online sales.

For the new and expensive stuff, you might have better luck at a consignment store. I would see if there's one in your area that concentrates on higher-end clothing and accessories. At a yard sale, people will expect to give you $10 for a Dooney and Burke. At an estate sale, I would expect furnishings, tools, decor--basically, anything in a household.

Sounds more like a yard sale to me. However, as others have posted previously, you will typically get pennies on the dollar running a yard sale where people are basically trying to dispose of things they no longer want or need. I doubt you can make a living running yard sales.

However it will also include a lot of brand new clothes from a very popular store, high priced shoes, and a few Dooney and Bourkes all brand new. A bit confused on how you plan to make money selling something you purchased at full price, never used and now want to sell.

There are TONS of online-based consignment for things with a high-end brand. I would use those services before I put anything like a Dooney & Burke in a yard sale!!!!

We are having an estate sale in April. The company will only agree to do one if you have a minimum of $25,000 worth of stuff to sell (furniture, artwork, jewelry, silver...). There won’t be any clothing, toys, Knick knacks in the sale. The company keeps 35%, but that’s fine with me, I don’t even have to be there.

at a yard sale - you are going to have to be happy with 5-10 for a dooney - otherwise they won't sell

I would take your name branded items to a consignment store like Plato's Closet - they tend to give pretty decemt pricing for the namebranded items

An Estate sale is usually held when the owner dies, and it is usually furniture, antiques, and other contents of a house, not necessarily clothing and purses. I think what you are describing would do better in Facebook groups or consignment stores because no one goes to a yard sale/garage sale/tag sale expecting to pay anywhere close to 40-50% of MSRP on anything. More like pennies on the dollar.

Agree with taking it to consignment or ebay if you want decent returns.
good luck!

I think it would be somewhat false advertising to call it an Estate Sale when it isn't. I would just call in a yard sale. I do agree with the posters above who said there is no way people will pay 50% of MSRP at a yard sale.

I love yard sales, but would never pay more than about $5 for a piece of clothing at one even it it is new with the tags still on it.

I’d call it a yard sale. Have you ever done a yard sale before? I’d think twice about putting higher end items like your Dooney & Bourke. I’ve been doing yard sales for years I’ve put out high end clothing never worn with tags on & people don’t want to pay more than a couple of dollars for something I paid $50 on. My husband sells on EBay & the shipping costs are so high. Sometimes he doesn’t even break even.

If you advertise it as an estate sale you are going to attract buyers who are looking for most of the items in the estate to be for sale.
They will be looking for things like furniture, artwork, antiques, entire contents of kitchens, garages, etc.
If you aren't selling the contents of your home, and just selling typical yardsale items then just call it a yardsale.

I would definitely look in to selling your higher end items and new clothes another way if you want at least half of their MSRP
