For my 40th.Have been to CG before the renovations. Never been to Yachtsman. Which would you choose?

Which menu looks more appealing to you?

Both restaurants have their pros and cons. Personally, I would go with California Grill. CA Grill has a nice mixture of items on the menu and a lively atmosphere (which can also be a downside because it can be loud). The view from the windows is outstanding and if you are there during fireworks, the observation decks provide an amazing view. The service has been good, but a little inconsistent. Yachtsman Steakhouse is focused on steaks with some other items. The atmosphere is more sedate, with kind of weird decor (nautical meets cowboy). The service was good and food good (though, most any Signature should be able to do steaks properly). I saw a lot of convention-goers there and it did strike me as a good place for a business dinner.

Go to YSH simply because you've never been there. The menu and service is excellent.

I don't think you can go wrong with either restaurant. Of the two, my personal preference is Yachtsman, we just had an overall better experience there both food and service.

I also agree to go with Yachtsman because you've never been. I'm always trying to make sure I add at least a few new places each trip so I can experience as much of WDW in my life as possible. :-)

We have had dinner at both. We weren't that impressed with Yachtsman. Our server was not very attentive. Food was just okay. We have had dinner twice at Captain's Grill both being good experiences!

I super, super love Yachtsman. Since you've never been there, I would recommend you try it. That said, I might try CG because I have never been there!

We don't care for the post renovations CG at all and prior it was our number one WDW restaurant. We love Yachtsman-more intimate atmosphere, the food is great and the service is phenomenal. To further confuse you, Shula's at the Dolphin is insanely good as well.

Thanks for all the input! Its a tough decision---I may stick to CG since we are staying at the GF so its more convenien (but transferring to YC the next day!). I am worried about the changes but will see....We also try to do new things each trip though.... ugh.. ok... think think think...

We were very disappointed in the Yachtsman. The food was average and expensive. It was our least favorite meal in our whole trip. We really felt like we wasted our money and left hungry because we couldn't afford to buy more to eat.

Are you using Dining Credits? If so, I guess CG. Great atmosphere. Neither are that great for food. Yachtsman was pretty horrible in all categories the last time we went. CG used to be amazing where we went every year. We've gone twice since the renovations and very disappointed both times. The food was Good to okay with a great atmosphere, horrible service though.

If not using credits, Shula's for sure on site, otherwise Bull Bear at Waldorf (kind of onsite). There's no comparison of Shula or Bull Bear to any Disney steak house.

Why not do both????? For my 40th in the world I just made every day my birthday so every meal was a celebration ; )

I enjoy both. For a birthday, I'd probably pick CG for the option to view fireworks. All birthdays should include fireworks. :) But really you can't go wrong.

I'm curious, and not to flame you, but did you look at the menu and know what the prices were going into the restaurant. Sure the place is not cheap, but a 12oz New York Strip ($49) is a lot of beef as is a 16 oz Rib Eye ($54) and so is an 18 oz Kansas City Strip Steak ($59). I couldn't imagine walking out of that place being hungry unless one didn't know the cost and tried to get by on appetizers. If you found it to be average quality that would be a fair statement and one to respect, after all we all have differing opinions. However, leaving hungry because of finances is another story. Perhaps on the Boardwalk Captains Grille, Cape May or Trattoria al Forna would have been a better choice on the budget.

CG is a must do for us; view, service and food are top notch! We've been to YSH a couple times but we were disappointed both times. Poor service and just ok food. DH loves the sushi at CG and I love the goat cheese ravioli starter and the steak with goat cheese polenta subbed in.

I'd go for the Yachtsman, but if you want a premium steakhouse experience, Shula's is the spot.

We went to Yachtsman in May, celebrated our 30th anniversary dinner there. It was amazing! The food was awesome, the service even better. Our waiter took the time to make sure we got exactly what we wanted (he asked each of us what we liked, didn't like...) and he spoiled us by bring us out a free dessert sampler to share because it was our anniversary. They took very good care of us!

We too went to the Yachtsman's for our 45th anniversary. Our waiter was terrific. They had a personalized menu for us. The food was delicious, the service outstanding and we like the setting. We have also enjoyed LC in the past, but I would choose YC.
Have Fun

It's been a while since I've been to the Yachtsman. I remember the food and service being very good - as was a visit from the chef for an allergy. The atmosphere was nice, but nothing stands out. I liked the previous "nautical meets cowboy" reference. We were at California Grill in November. Loved every part of it!!! Would definitely want to be there for a birthday celebration. Goat cheese ravioli was a favorite.

We did look at the menu beforehand. I ordered a steak and a side dish, and I didn't like the side, so I hardly ate it. I am a breastfeeding mother with a large appetite, so just having a steak wasn't enough. I also eat gluten free so couldnt eat any of the bread (normally this doesnt matter to me). This was the last night of our trip, money was low. I couldnt afford to buy an additional side, and who knows how good it would have been. The steak itself was nothing special, certainly not worth the $50 price tag. We thought we would be having an incredible meal, and everything was average at best. The meal was a bad value. I enjoyed my regular veggie omelet breakfast at All Star Music 100x more.

Yachtsman for sure.

We do usually do both each trip and I really don't like the service AT ALL at the GC. They are working hard to turn the tables and in all of our trips we've never gotten a table with a good fireworks view. Our last trip out to the deck the lady just behind me and to the left was taking pictures with a flash. Blinding everyone around her and the only thing that would ever come out on those pictures would be the back of my head. My kids really dislike when I say even the simplest thing like "No Flash Please" to strangers so it wasn't worth it to argue. Plus you could tell her party had been drinking and were loud so you could tell even the most polite request wouldn't have been received well. Of the dozen's of times we went maybe once the deck was nice. It can get really windy and the music hard to hear. The view is not exactly straight on.

The food is much better at the Yachtsman IMHO. The rolls and garlic are amazing. Post renovations, the portions at CG have really gone downhill. My DD has been eating the kid's meal steak with the best mac and cheese in the world and they wouldn't let us order an adult portion which was so disappointing for her. The cheese plate got moved to the dessert menu so we weren't aware we could order it for an app until after we were done.
