Yachtsman Steakhouse, our opinions, and Long....

For us the service has always been good, the food, however, can be hit-on-miss. I had that "prime" NY strip and also was dissapointed. Other meals have been excellent though.

But on our honeymoon I want him to have several great steak experiences!
Personally, if this was my critical criterion, then I would visit Shula's several times.

Did the waiter ask your husband how his meal was, and if so, did he tell him it wasn't cooked enough for his taste? Did he send it back or ask for it to be cooked a little more?

First to the person who wants a good steak meal for her husband on their honeymoon, I would go to Shula's.....over any of the Disney restaurants.

I am assuming that the previous post was directed to me for answering, so here goes..

No, the waiter never came back to the table to ask my husband how the steak was. I asked my husband if steak was too rare for him and did he want to send it back. At that point, he was disgusted with the service and the meal itself and said no way. When he gets upset like that, I know better than to push him. He left his food, the steak was not a great cut of meat either and he knew that so cooking was not the only issue.

Wow! That certainly qualifies as horrible service. Frankly, if I couldn't eat my meal because it wasn't prepared the way I requested, and the waiter never came back to check on me, I would have insisted that the meal be comped! I mean, if he never came back to check, he didn't have an opportunity to make it right, so I would have asked for it to be removed from the bill.

Funny, you should say that... we were in Savannah, GA, eating at the Pink House, one of the older known restaurants in Savannah... My husband ordered flounder, it said it was scored, the waiter never told us anything else. When the fish came, it was a full presentation of fish, without the eye, so that meant it had not been boned and skin on. Blech!!!!! My husband was sort of picking at it, but once he had a bone in his mouth that was it. The manager came over and asked if there was something wrong...DH told him he had no idea it was the whole fish, bones in and was having difficulty eating around the bones. The manager said your waiter should have told you it was a full presentation....he had not.

Skipping to the end, we did not do dessert, bill came and we were charged for the fish even though my husband did not eat it, even though the waiter had not told us it was full presentation and even though the manager was aware of the issue......I know some would argue over these matters and quite frankly I think they should not have charged us for the dinner, but we pick and choose our battles and why ruin the night by fighting for them to take it off the bill. They should have done the right thing and not charged us...they did not. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Lately, I find the less frills at a restaurant, the less you expect and the more pleasantly surprised you are.

We were not impressed with our meal at Yachtsman last year. Our trip in August does not include them in our ADR's. Since we are staying at BC again, it would have been nice to dine here. But we would rather spend our time at the Epcot restaurants for dinner. :)

Been too long since we've done YSH for me to offer any fair comments--but previous meals there were fine.
Should add tho that at most (or rather, many) steakhouses, the server will immediately ask that we cut into the steak to be certain that it is cooked to the proper temperature. That way, things can be immediately corrected if there is a problem.
And Mackey Mouses' experience at YSH suggests service at a restaurant does extend beyond just the server--it starts with the host/hostess at the podium and goes on from there.

The Yachtsman is on my list of must do's for each trip. In the past year I have been there 3 times (and probally a total of 10 times over the past few years) and on each of my trips the service has been wonderful. The steak that you get there is the same steak that you would get at any signature restaurant, Disney buys in bulk. It's the service and atmosphere that distinguishes restaurants. I've talked to our waiters/waitresses before and Yachtsman tends to keep the same people working there for many years (our last waitress has worked there for over 10 years). Often times our food experience can be biased by something that initally turns us off and then nothing will satisfy. Overall I feel that the Yachtsman is a good restaurant and I will be going back there this May. I have recommended it to others and they have enjoyed it. I have also found that the staff and management are very helpful and actively try to make sure that you have a good experience.

Thanks for your review. We were also disappointed when we ate there last summer.
