DH and I just decided to eat at the Yachtsman our first night of our trip.

Does anyone know if they offer a chef's menu and/or wine flights? I'd like to do something special that night and thought I remembered that they sometimes offered this.

I'd be interested in the same information for Artist Point as well. I know they have a wine flight (3 1/2 glasses), but I was not sure how theirs works - is it by course and who determines the wine selection?

Thanks!

Yachtsman Steakhouse is always accommodating, but the chef can cook only what he has on hand. As far as the wine, they have an extensive list and also some special reserve items that may be in short supply that you have to ask about.

I suggest you call a couple days in advance and speak to one of the managers, the GM is Jim Griffin (Formally of V&A's and California Grill) the two assistant managers are Paul Kloppman and Paul E.) Call after 5:30 pm and just ask to speak to whichever manager is on duty 407-934-3356, try to avoid calling on Friday or Saturday nights since they are the busiest.

Never been to Yachtsman, but we've eaten at Artist Point several times.

When we were last there in May, they offered a Chef's selection menu and my dh and I both ordered from it. Very good deal in my opinion. It included 1/2 appetizer (mushroom soup...to die for!), 1/2 salad, full entree and full dessert. Plenty, if not too much, food!!

As for wine flights...not sure on that, as we ordered beer that evening.

Have fun!!

We did the wine flight at Artist Point after our wedding. It is 3 glasses, we let the server select the wines although we could have picked them. The wines were chosen after we decided on our meal, and all three glasses were brought just before the appetizer (I think) and our server lined them up explaining this wine with this course, etc.

HTH:D

Artist point does offer a wine flight..three glasses...we always let the chef/server decide on the choices.

There is a one price menu at artist point..4 courses..a great bargain.

We did the "wine flight" at Artist Point last November. I let our server choose the wines and was disappointed with the selection. I am not convinced that he knew anything more than I about wine. :) Next time, I will do the "flights" again, but choose them myself. :teeth:

Paul,

That is exactly what I was afraid of! :teeth: But then again, my DH and I are not refined drinkers...so we probably would not know the difference! :hyper:

When in doubt, go by the price of the glass, I always say. ;) I noticed that our server picked the less espensive wines for the most part, not necessarily the ones that would best complement the selections we made. I think that we would have been better off if the chef had made the selections, but that did not appear to be an option that evening.

We did AP in August and both DW and I had the wine flights with our meals. Our server made suggestions, but the choice is up to you. However, our server was excellent, so she wound up bringing us samples of four different wines from which we were trying to choose--no charge. Being an accomplished oenophile (though nowhere near an expert), I have found that most top tier restaurants will give you free samples if you ask, since the mark up on wines in most restaurants is anywhere from 100-200% over retail, so if you wind up ordering wine, that's a big profit leader for them. Thus, a small sample or two or three won't hurt the bottom line.

In my particular case, I chose to have a glass of a lighter red for my appetizer and salad courses, a glass of hearty red for my entree, and a glass port to go with my dessert. When I ordered my port, I expressed some indecision between it and another, so when dessert came, I got my glass of port plus a sample of the one I did not choose. As you might imagine, we tipped our server quite well, as she made our dinner an exceptional experience.

Keep in mind for the flights that you can order three glasses of the same wine if you wish, or you can order three different glasses. Once again, I'd urge you to ask for a couple of samples unless you have complete confidence in your server's opinion. As for which wine to order with which course, that takes years of expererience, and I'm still learning. As a general rule, however, lighter wines (most whites, pinot noirs, and some merlots), go with lighter foods, while heavier wines (zinfandel, some merlots, cabernet sauvignon) pair up better with more substantial fare such as filet or steak. Above all else, go with what you like. Bon appetit!

Thanks Sleepydog25! Do you happen to remember who your server was?

This thread just made me laugh because it reminded me of when my husband and I ate at Emerils Delmonico's in Las Vegas and ordered our wine - the wine steward was helping us select and finally I just busted out laughing and told him we were rednecks from NC and that we did not care if the wine matched the food!!

We have come quite a ways since then! (Thank goodness!) :teeth:

Stephanie was our server at AP that night, a mature woman with glasses if I remember correctly. She not only was great help with the menu, but made our DD4 feel right at home while keeping the timing of our food just right so that DD didn't have long lapses of nothing to do. I'd certainly recommend asking for her. ::yes::

I ate at Artist's Point two nights ago. They offer three and four glass wine pairings. Each menu item has printed underneath it what the suggested wine is for that item. You certainly can ask for something else, but unless you know your stuff, take what's suggested. They are great vintages when paired with the food offerings.

HTH
