i want to request being close to the lobby but wondering if any of those rooms are newly renovated? Also does faxing request really work?

At this point most - if not all - rooms are renovated. Most resorts do not review faxes. Your best bet is to call your request into the main reservation line

I did a request through Touring Plans. Asked for close to lobby & got it. Room 2145 was renovated. I'm under the impression that all rooms are finished.

I've faxed, with success, through Touring Plans as well.

In your case, you can simply call WDW and have "close to lobby" "renovated room" placed as requests on your reservation.
