I know that it's a signature restaurant so they expect people to dress nicer for dinner and their dress code says no shorts but would khaki shorts that fall just above the knee be acceptable for DH & DS to wear if they were also wearing a collared shirt and boat shoes?

The "code" does not say no shorts.

And almost any sort of shorts are fine--including cargo style.

And a collared shirt is not required and footwear isn't even mentioned in the "code".

I just looked at "the code" again and they do mention collared shirts. You are right though, they don't specify footwear. This is our first trip to WDW, we have only done Disney cruises before so I assumed that a "Fine Dining" restaurant like the Yachtsman would have a similar dress code to Remy or Palo or even the main dining room on formal night.

The important line is this:

Not permitted are tank tops, swimsuits, swimsuit cover-ups, hats for gentlemen, cut-offs, torn clothing and t-shirts with offensive language and/or graphics.

Basically, anything that's NOT on that list is going to walk through the door. No restaurant at WDW should be considered fine dining (except V&A) and none require formal dress (except V&A). Your family will look perfectly nice in khaki shorts & you may indeed be some of the best-dressed people in the room.

I always wear shorts and a polo. Keep in mind though, that the shorts you wear need to be oversized because that side of Truffles Mac and Cheese combined with the potato and NY strip leaves you busting at the seams. Nothing a nice little walk around the lake after dinner won't cure!

I was amazed at some of the things I have seen people wearing in there. They'll be fine in khaki shorts.

Ha ha...I already have my MuMu dress ready! Looking forward to the Creme Brulee!

DH and DS always go as you describe. A nice pair of dressy shorts and a collared polo shirt. No hats for the gentleman please.

Just hope you will note that the code is a suggested way of dressing--it is not a required way. Which is why there is that very short list of not permitted items. And why you will see as many cargo shorts as dress shorts. And noting that they expressly permit T-shirts so long as they have no "offensive" wording. Collared shirts are merely a suggestion.

We enjoy the Yachtsman when we visit WDW. My DH usually wears khaki pants and a polo, while my DSs usually wear khaki shorts and polos. I would say that this is typical of the restaurant, but there is a wide range. As others have pointed out, you won't be asked to leave unless you are wearing bathing suits or crude clothing. That said, I think people usually dress a step up from the parks--but khaki shorts and a polo are fine.
