XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

Did anybody else get a little depressed when they put the flame out and declared the games closed? :sad1:

I really enjoyed the ending of the ceremony though with Michael Buble and all the "Made in Canada" stuff. Very cute.

See you all in 2012!

I always get sad when the Olympics end. I've had two weeks of non-stop TV viewing of the most amazing things...and now someone pulls the plug and I go through withdrawal....

Hedley? ewwwwwwwwwwwww

I would have liked to have seen the likes of Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven, Barenaked Ladies, Gordon Lightfoot, Jully Black, K'Naan, Diana Krall, Blue Rodeo, Stabilo, Feist, Mother Mother, to name a few.

Exactly, the acts they had on were all geared towards the teen crowd. It's not that they lack talent it's just that the organizers should have added more mainstream talent. Where was Great Big Sea - if you want to get an audience moving they are the band to do it.

I loved all the parts before the bands came on. All the poking fun at our stereotypes - that was lighthearted.

My other issue was that the show just seemed to end, it didn't feel like there was any closure to it; I wanted to get all choked up and it didn't happen. And in true Canadian fashion, I'm sorry, but this is just my opinion. If other people enjoyed the show as it was, that's great.

Those people would have been great as well but you can only put in so much and they did cover a wide range of audiences. The other thing to remember is that the concert portion of a closing ceremony is typically geared towards the athletes who tend to be a younger audience.

Totally. I teared up at that. In the past, I've refused to watch the closing ceremonies because I knew I'd get depressed but last night I watched it while texting with a friend so we could discuss everything. Darn it, now I have nothing interesting to watch while working during the day! I mean, I like "Whose Wedding is it Anyway?" and all, but it just ain't as good as live biathlon coverage. :sad1:

I have NO idea who any of those acts are I(aside from BNL).

Yes, because there is nobody the kids of today like more than Neil Young, Michael Buble and William Shatner.:lmao:

Well, you aren't likely going to know bands who don't have US contracts. There are tons of amazing Canadian bands that aren't mainstream in the US. However, you have probably heard the song Paralyzer by Finger Eleven. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgaCHmxmeUo

You haven't head of Our Lady Peace? They are arguably Canada's most popular alternative rock band. Raine Maida is the lead singer and he's married to Chantal Kreviazuk. They wrote Permanent for David Cook, Walk Away for Kelly Clarkson.

Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian legend. Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. If you could read my mind. He's an oldie but a goodie.

Ah. That song I know. Couldn't tell you who sang it if you offered me a million bucks. Now I know...Gordon Lightfoot.

Our Lady Peace would have been great!!! A couple of years ago they played downtown Brampton at new year's (outside venue) It was chaos, but great.
BTW Chantal is a relative of mine..... my aunts cousin was Chantal's grandma (my claim to fame....lol).

I listen to the alt rock station here all the time. Never heard that band mentioned or the song. Doesn't mean they aren't popular or no good. Just means they haven't made it this far south yet. ;)

That song was in 2002 so if they're not there yet...

The band has sold over 5 million albums worldwide. You probably would recognize some of their stuff.

How about Innocent? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1Z89zW-8sY

(if nothing...I'm persistent)

I turned it off when Michael Buble came on. IMHO-he's a lounge singer, and if I'm going to listen to that I'd rather hear Bill Murray do the Star Wars Theme.

Lounge Singer!!!! My oh my, one of the best entertainers around today and you feel he is a lounge singer. :confused3

"......so much for my happy ending...." :rotfl2:

That one too :lmao:

I was thinking more

Hey! Hey! You! You!

I don't like your girlfriend!

No Way! No Way!

I think you need one!

I hate that stupid song, dumbest lyrics ever but I end up with it stuck in my head :headache:

And "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is part of the area musical soundtrack for the Canada pavilion at Epcot (the ambient music playing in the background). Always seemed a little morbid to me & I wondered why they didn't pick a different one of his songs.

Personally, this is my favorite song of theirs. I'd heard of them courtesy of someone on a hockey forum I'm on who had a link in his sig, though that song I actually heard during an episode of Rescue Me, whereupon I fell completely in love with it. :thumbsup2

So how was Nickelback? What song did they do? I thought the opening ceremony was long and boring so I skipped the closing one.

Well if they played more than one song NBC didn't show the others. The one they did show was Burn It to the Ground. I really like this song and it sounded awesome. Plus you could tell the atheletes were really getting into the song.
