I would not recommend trying to do this on your own. There are too many transportation issues that could go wrong and you missing the ship. You have to take the ferry from Cozumel to the mainland and then get transportation (bus) to Xplor. It is about $109/pp for entrance to Xplor, so figuring in transportation costs, you probably won't save enough to risk missing the ship.
IF you do it on your own let me give you some advice. Do not buy roundtrip tickets on the ferry. There are two companies so you can hop on the first one. Second, you don't need a bus to get to XPlor. You can grab a taxi right by the dock in Playa Del Carmen. It should cost 10.00 or close to it. We stay in Playa Del Carmen and also Cozumel for land vacations. We take taxi's all the time from our resort which is in between XPlor and Xcaret to Playa Del Carmen. Fast, easy and inexpensive.
I've heard great things about XPlor but never have gone.
We are on the Magic next week, and we have XPLOR scheduled. We are going with Disney due to the fear of missing the boat. From what I have read, we will only get about 4 hours in the park itself, even though it is a 7.5 hr excursion due to all the travel. I will report back in two weeks how it went.

We were thinking of this excursion as well but are concerned about the boat ride to the mainland. I've read there is alot of motion and can cause sickness even if not prone to that. GeorgeY was this a problem or did you notice if others were sick due to the travel?
There wasn't an option to sit outside on the ferry that Disney brought in, but that could be a different boat every time.
personally, My kids and I love the rocking boat and it was rocking pretty violently, with Huge swells.
However, there were quite a few people that were sick, and the sounds and smell coming from all around was not nice. Those people looked miserable.

Please keep these reviews coming. I was so torn between booking Xplor and el Rio Secreto. We went with Rio Secreto and it was nothing shy of AWESOME! As we drove past I told DS we would try Xplor next time.
My concerns with Xplor were crowds and spending the four short hours in lines.
We took the ferry this past week and it was not bad at all. It was quite comforting actually and I started to doze off getting rocked to sleep. DS and I had the whole front of the ferry to ourselves as the people who didn't like the motion were recommended to sit in the back.
Yes, DCL had a ferry waiting for us as we stepped off the ship. We did not have to wait at all. The only people on the ferry were from the Magic even the Fantasy cruisers were not on our ferry.
Does anyone knows if you want to drive the ATV, does the Xplor park requires you to have a US/international driving license or would any other country's license do to prove that you can drive?
does anybody check, when you enter the park?
