My DH grandma is 81 years old, and besides giving her pictures of the kids for christmas, I thought of getting her household supplies , like dish detergent, paper supplies, some food for her cat, some of her favorite cookies, etc. (She is alone and on a small income, this is basically stuff she needs, my SIL is getting her gift certificates for the grocery store) ANd I would put it in a box and wrap it all up. Well, DH said that was the stupidest idea he ever heard of. (of course the last time he went christmas shopping was before we got married, and I told him so)

I thought it was a good idea. What do you think?

I think it is a great idea!

I am having this same dilema for DH's grandma. My final solution: a pair of really good slippers (DH's mom is getting a pair too) along with her favorite candy (wherthers (sp?)), and a box of those "gumdrop" fruit slices.

Hope she likes it!

I think it is a fantastic idea!! I would much prefer to get or give something that is useful.
For my then 1 year old nephews BD last year, I sent him an Applebee's GC. No, a 1 yo didn't understand the gift, but he didn't need a toy either. I told my sis (her new family is on a tight budget) that it was for the three of them to go out and celebrate his BD together. They enjoyed a fun meal that they usually could not have afforded.

Has your DH never heard of gift baskets? It's a great idea.

You could get a nice inexpensive basket and line it with Xmasy tissue and put the stuff in it and then put it in a box and wrap it. Make it goodies that are "special" but necessary (as opposed to toilet paper and dish detergent)......really nice soft tissues......nice hand soap and lotion.......pretty paper napkins.......non-perishable foodstuffs like her cookies that you mentioned...nuts if she eats them....and so forth. DH and I have done this for his mother as well as for his elderly aunt and they have loved it.

They've also liked the Hickory Farms pre-packaged gift packs.

Another hit was the year we got them blank notecards and stationery, assorted generic greeting cards, a couple of nice pens, and a roll of postage stamps...all in a little gift basket.

I think it is a wonderful idea!!! Some of my older relatives ask for items like these. Maybe add some soups, hot chocolate, envelopes and stamps. Why not take a roll or two of foil and wrap all the gifts into a giant looking Hershey Kiss. Use a streamer coming out of the top saying Merry Christmas.

We give my grandparents grocery store gift certificates. They wont accept money, they wont let you buy them food or whatever.. so the grocery store helps them out.
