Just wanted to drop a note here, most of those on the Budget Board already know stuff like this - but just in case it helps one person:
We subscribe to XM Radio for DH's car. They sucked us in with the '3 month free' deal when we bought it and like to get it for a SMALL monthly charge. So we usually pay the yearly fee since it shaves some cost off....Just got a bill for the first time in a year. It showed a 3 month service and our cost being - $45. I called to see if we could get the deal we had last year, which was less than half this cost. The woman I spoke with first 'checked' for promotions and only offered me a reduced charge for fewer channels. I told her I wanted to cancel my service. When you do this - they send you to a different department. This person was able to find and get me the same promotion as last year - about $80 for a year.
I feel so badly for that first girl - she can't do anything and can't even offer any true deals - how in the world is she supposed to keep any customers? I hope she isn't working on commission since they don't give her any ability to keep customers.
So moral is to be sure to talk to the 'canceling service' department to get the best deal.
