XDR-TB Patient Forced into Quarantine.

I think you misunderstood me, I was randomly reminiscing....then agreeing with the law/action.

I was actually agreeing with you and reinforcing your point of view with my own. We are on the same page.

TB is making a comeback around here. For some reason, it seems to be a real health issue among the illegals getting in to our country (I'm not giving an opinion on it, just an observation). Most health care workers and teachers are required to have tests yearly. I know of some who are tested more often. And in the schools in this part of Texas, at least, the students do have to have tine tests, I don't know how often. When we lived in Massachusetts our children had to have a TBest for school once and that's it. However, when we moved to Texas, they had to have one again as part of their regular school shots. I tried to tell the school, "TB test? Oh, they had that years ago." I didn't know it would have to be done regularly.

I live in Texas and work in an urban district in Houston. We have a large population of students who were born outside of the US and regularly travel outside of the US as well. There are no yearly TB tests required. I have not had a required TB test since student teaching, although I did have one when I found out one of my kids was infected. This disturbs me greatly.

Wow! I know it's a requirement in our area (I'm a teacher). I assumed it was a state law, but it must just be around here because we're so close to the border. I just learned something, thanks!

We took dd for her 3 year checkup today. We were asked if she had been around someone who had been in or worked at a correctional facility in the last 5 years or someone who had been in a nursing home. Well, my grandfather is currently in rehab at a nursing home and she has seen him. They made a notation on her chart.

We asked why the questions (hadn't heard those with the older two) and they told us that she is at risk for being exposed to tb in those situations. DH asked if it was because of her age and the doctor said, no, that we were at an equal risk. Ummm, great - do you know how many nursing homes I have been in lately looking for somewhere good for my grandpa to be for the next month? :sad2:

The doctor also said that she would be required to be tested for tb before she goes into a preschool.

My fil had minor surgery last year and was in the hospital for a couple of days. We were going to bring the kids to see him and he called and said not to. They had just moved a tb patient into the next room and he was worried about exposure to the kids as the same nurses were taking care of both of them. Apparently, the man was highly contagious and the nurses and doctors were not exactly reassuring about his exposure. Also, one of the nurses came into fil's room and dumped some liquid from another patient's room into his toliet. Mil freaked (I think I would have too).

it's not the first time it's happened. in the 90's the county i worked for in california had a horrendous problem with tb among a group of immigrants. i had at least one client whose refusal despite extensive education on how important it was for her to take her meds never cooperated. the public health authority finaly got a court order that deemed her a public health risk, put out an arrest warrant for her and was successful in implementing a house arrest with an ankle bracelet. she was highly contagious and a danger to everyone she encountered-i'm not sure what became of her, but i know when she was under house arrest public health was out there every day to ensure she took her meds and those workers had to rotate in and out of duty with very regular tb testing.

I don't think that there is a choice, particularly with an illness that at present is virtually untreatable. To expose an entire community, a state and ultimately a country to the ravages of TB is irresponsible.

I agree. One of the reasons I left hospital nursing was the number of drug resistant TB cases we were dealing with. Even with the special masks there is still a risk. There were TB sanitariums to confine people a century ago and unfortunately we may be headed back that direction. If a disease is incurable and contagious then quaranine is a necessity. A person like that could potentially infect hundreds of others and create a pandemic.

Since he has a Russian family he should move back there.:confused3
He left his wife and kids.:rolleyes1
Then he endangered others around him here in the USA.
Seriously he must be a piece of work.

Sorry he has the disease but hello I am sure he knew he needed to wear a mask. His butt deserves to sit in "jail".
