Has anyone ever done Xcaret on their own or through another tour operator? How far is it from the ship? DCL seems to be quite expensive so I am just wondering about other options. Thanks!

This is not really a trip that you want to try on your own from the advice I have been given many times and from the advice on this board. This excursion involves a ferry to the mainland, then transportation to Xcaret, and then getting back to the dock from Xcaret and getting a ferry back to Cozumel and the ship. We went on the Tulum ruins tour and travelled with the Xcaret tour except for going to and from Xcaret. I would have never tried to do that one on my own.

Xcaret seems to be a very interesting place and somewhere you would want to spend more time at than whats alloted with the DCL excursion. But like a prior poster said, there are lots of things that can go wrong when trying to return to the ship from there. If you're not on a DCL excursion, the ship leaves without you when it's going to leave. If you are on a DCL excursion, they'll wait for you.

I'd love to do Xcaret on my own. Will do it sometime when we are staying in Cancun. From a cruise I would do it through the official cruise excursion, never on my own.

I don't know if this has happend or not, but if things get so bad that your DCL excursion can't make it back to the ship before it leaves, DCL will then be responsible for you. If you are on your own excursion, then you're responsible for getting yourself back to port canaveral and gathering your luggage that made it to CC!
