Xbox Live

I might have to look into that. My DS is going to be 11 on Sunday and the only thing he wants from everyone is money so he can buy an XBox 360. I was looking at getting him an XBox Live Subscription. But, not sure what all is needed to get this set up? Do we have to buy anything extra to be able to use this?

He shouldn't need anything to use the subscription (besides having an xbox and the games that will utilize the subscription). Headsets of some sort are great to have. If you need it by Sunday, for $5 more you can order from walmart online and you should be able to pick it up in store within a day or two.

If I remember correctly though, they need an email address for the subscription. I know all my boys have theirs and get updates/info via email.

Do you need a wireless modem (which we have)? Or how does it hook up to be live (I am very electronically challenged...)

Both of my boys just got their Live accounts renewed as a Christmas gift from Nana. If I were to purchase this now, could I just put it away for next Christmas? It is a great deal!

It can connect to the internet with a XBox wireless adaptor (sold at most major XBox retailers), or by simply connecting a $10 ethernet cable to your router/nearest network outlet.

Ok - so, if I am correct.... He is going to put the Xbox in his room, which is on the 1st level in the house. The wireless modem is on our computer, which is on the 4th level in our house. So, we would have to get the XBox Wireless adapter - correct? Are they very expensive. He thinks he can just plug and go....

I forgot about the wireless connector. That is a long way to go and a few levels to go through. I think it depends on how good your connection is. When we first bought a good computer, our router and modem were in the great room, pc in the kitchen. Straight shot, no obstructions. We dropped signal all of the time.

The antenna will cost between $75-100. I guess there are two different kinds now. One for wireless N. We're heard that you can use a generic wireless antenna but have never tested it, nor have any of their friends. Best speeds still seem to be with the ethernet cord.

Our set up now, we do have the wireless but the xbox is in the same room as the modem & router (office). It doesn't have to go far, no obstructions. They can move this into the family room or basement without an issue but it's not that far, not many obstructions. The wireless antenna will only work as good as your router will let it (speed) and the limited obstructions.

Do you have a laptop to check and see if it will work well that way?

If not, you might be able to run an ethernet port to the room. My brother in law did this for us, for our boys to be able to use the internet more easily. It took an afternoon. We did not want to have a bunch of wireless cards after the first and only experience we had with it.

Also, with xbox live, they get to talk to each other. Anyone and everyone. Ours is in the office because on the few occasions that I haven't been around and walked in, there have been some foul mouthed and rude people on there.

I believe you can buy this and put it up. It is not activated until you key in the code. Same as when you buy it at a b&m store.

Thanks. That helps. I do use my laptop on the 1st level and have no issues with it - so, it might work??

If you have no problems, you should be alright.

You just might want to hang around or pop in unexpectedly while he is playing live. I have three boys (17, 14, 12) and I really won't let them play out of earshot.

Good to know. Since I really don't understand how this whole thing works anyway...

Think of it as a chat room for the games. Speaking chat-room and they do have the ability to send messages.

You can block people and do something to their "reputation." It doesn't do much though.

My Ds got the Xbox live for Christmas and had to buy the wireless router
(99.00), the headset thingy came with his console. It works fine even though the main router is downstairs and he is upstairs.

Even though he is upstairs, I can still hear him shouting "Down, down" and talking to his friends while playing...I forget the game they are all playing now, some kind of war game.
