My son (14)really wants one for christmas. I have been researching and I am finding that people prefer the PS3. Does anyone have one, or bought one for their children and found that they wish they hadn't?

My DS 14, and all of his friends play the xbox 360. We have a wii and a PS2 and he never plays with these anymore, I can't speak about the PS3, but he has never asked for one, and he LOVES the xbox.

We are thinking about the same thing. The PS3 is a Blu-Ray player, which is a plus when you get your 1080p HD TV. But, my son (also 14)wants the Xbox. Does anyone know if the newer XBOX360 plays DVD's? Also, be sure to get the one with at least 60GB to support future use.

In my opinion, I'd let the 14 year old boy choose...if he's anything like my DS, he wants a specific game system for a specific reason.

My DS (19) has both the PS3 and the Xbox 360. He got the PS3 for Christmas 2 years ago. He bought the Xbox 360 a month or so ago, from his paycheck.

Some key differences: with the PS3, it has built in ethernet so you can go online to play games. With the Xbox, you either have to set it up right by your router to plug it in with an ethernet cable. If it's too far away, you have to by an adapter (about $90-$100).

The Xbox has a monthly fee to play online, the PS3 does not. I'm not sure what that fee is, as DS pays for it himself.

In addition, the Xbox is available in 3 different configurations. I don't think the cheapest one has a hard drive. DS bought the mid-priced one.

Different games are available for each, and often not available on the competing product.

Personally, I'd ask DS specifically which one he wants, and why. Make him do a bit of research, so you end up buying the right system for his needs/wants.

Our xbox is in constant use (DS 15 and DD 12). It can play DVDs. BUT, we have gone through 2 already, in about 2 years. We had the "red ring of death", where Microsoft replaces the xbox with a refurbished one, and one year later the refurbished one died. Really, really made us angry! The PS3 is supposedly the better system, never any problems with it, and runs really quiet. However, everyone of DS friends has an xbox, and it's all about online gaming. I disagree with a PP about getting the 60G hard drive, the 20G is plenty big enough, DS uses his for downloading free or trial games.

My 26 DH is STILL addicted to his XBox.

PS3 doesn't even get looked at (I'm going to end up buying a Blu Ray player for him, and not purchasing the PS3 simply because it would be a waste of money)

Everyone I know is XBox oriented.

XBox's do play DVDs, to my knowledge. As long as you buy the remote.

got two grand sons 15 and 17 both have xbox 360 and when ask voted for xbox in fact 17 year old got his 360 for 8th grade graduation the night we left for Disney, he ran into SSR hooked it up to the tv and played it non stop the whole trip, yep when people ask him what he did that year at Disney he proudly announce played my new xbox 360. I was glad I had purchased non expiring tickets that year cause that boy hit 1 park the whole 5 days, but he loves that xbox, he is on his third one they have replaced it a couple times because he gets the death sentence screen on it, they pack it up send it in and they send another. Last year when other grand son got his for xmas he was to leave and go spend the rest the night with his mom, he opened the box and announced I am not going to moms tonight I am going home and play my xbox. Both the boys have tons of friends that also have xbox and they all seem to want it over the ps3, but seems dads wants ps3, bigger toys for bigger boys thing I think, lol

My DH 37 is addicted to the Xbox 360 as well! All my kids (other than the 2 yr old) play it too. We've had the "red ring of death" over the summer - but it's been fine since we had it fixed.

Everyone here loves the Xbox. The Xbox Live membership (to play online) is $49.99/yr, and you have to buy a membership for everyone who wants their own screen name. (My boys share one, DH has one too.) We have the wireless adapter to connect to our network, and that cost about $100.

There is a major Xbox update coming this week, I think (could be next week, I'm not sure). There will now be avatars like the Wii, and Microsoft has made a deal with Netflix, so if you're a Netflix member you can stream movies and TV shows through your internet-connected Xbox for no additional charge. This is cool :)

I agree, ask him what he prefers. There are games that are only available in certain platforms (the brand new and very popular Gears of War II just came out this week, and is only for Xbox, for example)
