X-Mas Gifts?

Ive always wondered on average how many gifts people give their kids for x-mas? And also how long does it take to open presents that morning?


When I was a kid X-mas with my mother could take 2-3 hours.......she bought A LOT of presents. Like 15 per kid [X2 kids]

X-mas with my grandmother was also large......around 15-20 gifts

Some gifts were small and some were large.

Now as an adult with no kids of my own x-mas this year only took about 40 minutes for everyone to open gifts......8 people total and maybe 5 gifts each?

So whats it like for you?

we only had about 7 or 8 but it took us about an or so the kids just love to hold up each gift and get pics of it sometimes two (I have always taken my cue from them on how they want to do it) I am blessed that they love to do this

I'm bad about giving my 9 year old DS too many things. Here's what he got this year:

"Big present" (which I gave him at the beginning of December so he could use it) Nightskiing "season pass" and season long snowboard rental.

From me:

Slot car set
Tiny glow in the dark air hockey game with flippers like pinball.

From Santa:

2 puppets -- a skunk and a porcupine
3 books -- a Foxtrot book, a book about how to draw Dragons, and the book "How to Twist a Dragon's Tale"
1 pair new snowboarding gloves
1 new snowboarding face cover for under his helmet
1 small pockeknife
1 chocolate frog a la Harry Potter
3 decks of cards for the game: Magic, the Gathering
4 Disney pins -- Mickey as Luke Skywalker, Stitch with a surfboard, the crocodile from Peter Pan, and a Mickey Head that opens up to show a picture of Walt.
6 single serving sized packages of Chex Mix (each individually wrapped -- took up most of the stocking

From Grandma #1:

A sparkly pink ball (which he loved)
A book about skiing
Chinese Checkers
A scraper so he could help me clean the car.

From Grandma #2:

A watch
A tiny Whitman's sampler with 4 pieces of candy

A small electric keyboard

From Aunt:

Bookstore gift card

From Godmother:

A pen that writes in "invisible ink" and a light to read it by.

So, way too many packages to open, but he had fun.

We ended up giving the kids about 10 gifts each. So, between us, friends and grandparents I'd say each kid (we have 2) had about 20 or so gifts. It took us about 2 hours to open everything.

As I keep telling my daughter, there is no such holiday as "X mas". Okay, now that I'm done nitpicking with you...

My kids probably got about a fifteen presents each from us (plus a ton from my parents and their godparents) but most of the ones from us were clothes. They got a few toys that they love, and their big presents were Nintendo DSs from my husband. They are now driving me bananas (with the music) sitting on the bed behind me playing Mario.

It took hours for them to open everything. My son gets overwhelmed and takes breaks. He's five. My daughter had her stuff all opened and was resorting to opening the dog's present (chewie bones) and mine.

DS and DD got Rockband (the older one) for the Wii to share from Santa

DS got a nerf gun from me
DD got Mario Party 1 (for the N64)

Stockings:
son's was all candy since he went shopping with me earlier in the week and picked out a book and a body pillow at Costco

DD's--Sudoku key chain, eyeliners, eyeshadow, fingernail polish, and candy

Our at home gift opening takes all of 10 minutes, lol.

I'll tell you what, my dollar sure doesn't seem to go as far as my parents' did when I was growing up. Gifts would take up most of the room on Christmas morning, but ours fit just fine under the tree with plenty of room to spare!

It took us probably 1-2 hours. We take turns.. admire, ect.

Each kid had probably 10-20 gifts under the tree.. BUT... that's because everything is wrapped separately.. so.. they got three books each.. all wrapped separately.. even though they were parts of series. They got five new football cards each.. their favorite players, all wrapped separately. One gift from each brother, one gift from santa, and one medium sized gift.

So, it wasn't a lot of gifts, but we try to make it last.

Christmas at our house is rather small about 15 presents for each child. Most small. One large. We started at 7:30 am opening 2-3 gifts at a time each watching the other then we take about an hour or so break so the kids can playing with their toys, reading their books or listening to their CDs. We eat breakfast, open 2-3 more each. Play some more. Eat lunch. Open some more.

This goes on all day. It ended last night at 7:15 pm with the opening of the last gift - the big one the trip to WDW to celebrate their birthdays. We really like spreading it over the whole day because the kids seem to really enjoy playing with their gifts for awhile after opening them.

We try not to overdo things here.
The kids each get one gift from DH and I, they give each other one gift, my parents (who are divorced) send one gift each, 2 aunts and one uncle do the same. DILs send about 4-8 gifts per kid depending on the year. So, all told they have somewhere between 10-15 gifts each to open when we unwrap family gifts on Christmas Eve. Additionally Santa will leave one larger item (or set) under the tree for them to discover Christmas morning as well as filling a stocking.

My DS5 got way too much stuff. He got a puppy, trampoline, Nintendo DS, DS games, PS2 games, tons of Star Wars stuff, board games, Indiana Jones toys, Batman toys, the list goes on! Takes no time to unwrap (Santa doesn't deliver wrapped toys here. They are set out beside the milk and cookies)!

Took four hours here.. But then again, there were gifts from me (DD, her DH, and my DGD) - gifts to me (from DD, her DH, and my DGD) - gifts to DD's IL's (from DD, her DH, and their DD) - gifts to my DGD (from me) - gifts to my DGD (from her other grandparents) - gifts to DGD (from her parents) - gifts to DGD (from Santa) - gifts to the pets (from Santa) - and then assorted gifts to all of us from various friends and out-of-state relatives..
