I'm confused too--it sounds like OP's cruise doesn't have a PIF until September... So isn't it a bit early to be concerned? There may not even be an Italy travel restriction by the time the cruise rolls around.
Hear you ... valid point .
Thank you - your point makes sense it’s her going into a country with known current travel bans / restrictions due to this issue that threw me .
-Common sense should rule here . -
But again , thank you for your point of view .

No, I could not in good conscience recommend any cruise, ever, to someone with a very weakened immune system. And I would especially not recommend one to Italy within the next year. Coronavirus might fizzle out as summer approaches. It might also resurge in the fall, worse than ever, as the 1918 Spanish flu did. We have no way of knowing at this time.

But the bottom line is that a severely immune-compromised person should avoid cruising in general. As a friend, I would cancel the cruise & not be a party to taking her on one.

Her having a bad immune doesnt hurt anyone else around her if I understood you. The questionnaire is looking for those who carry the virus or any other flu like symptoms. There will always be something that she can get so she is living life to the fullest.

BUT DID SHE HAVE TO GO BLAB ABOUT IT ON FB AND DISBOARDS???? THAT SHES PROUD THAT SHES DEALING WITH HER CONDITION AS SHE GOES ON A CRUISE TO ITALY??

Yes, you are overreacting about this woman's low immunity meaning you could get the virus. And it is also very tacky that you are calling her out on the boards, since you made a point to say she is a member here. Not to mention insensitive to whatever health condition she has going on. How do you think she is going to feel with your public shaming should she happen upon it??

If you are actually that concerned, this one woman should not be your only concern. Would I go on a cruise right now? No. Given that your cruise is 6 months from now, I would reevaluate closer to that time, unless you think a refund could be an issue and you need to cancel now.

You can only control your own responses. Absolutely the right attitude here.

I was recently diagnosed with Lupus and because it has caused inflammation in my lungs my Dr. is nervous about me taking a cruise in May. But my understanding of the situation is that it does not make me any more contagious or prone to caching the virus, just that if I happen to catch it then I may not be able to shake it off as other people might. My immune system has absolutely nothing to do with your personal risk of catching the virus. Anyone who is out and about is running the risk of catching it at this point. I know the risks and have decided to live life and enjoy this time with my family. There will always be something out there that has health risks so I would have to live in a bubble to avoid it all. Probably not as fun as Jake Gyllenhal makes it seem.

Are you afraid this passenger is potentially putting you at higher risk of needing quarantine? (Beside putting their own health at jeopardy.)

Healthy people boarding are just as likely to be carrying the virus.
Immuno-compromised passengers are probably more likely to show signs. Healthy people can bring it on to the ship too, tho many of them might not have any outward symptoms so there's less of a way to stop them at the gate.

Well now the CDC is advising against but not sure how far out in to the future this will stand.

So, If I’m following the original post accurately, your potential travel mate is going to Italy on a cruise at some point (unknown when) but before your Sept cruise. First off, I wouldn’t worry about the decisions she’s making. She’ll have concerns of her own if she gets to Italy and can’t get home (granted, also don’t know her home country) If things don’t change soon (again, don’t know the timing or else I missed the date along the way). Even if she takes the trip soon, there’s quite a bit of time between then and September. So 1 - I wouldn’t worry about what she does. A LOT can happen between now and September. You still have time to make a decision that works for you. If you are worried she’ll return with the virus and potentially spreading, then just don’t go in her vicinity for the 14 days. That’s still well before Sept!. What she does is her business, you aren’t responsible for her. What you decide either way, is do you want this person/her party to travel with you in Sept even if you things have calmed and you do go. And we can’t help you with that. *shrug*

You can’t push the date out ? You can’t call your travel company ? Are you aware of what is happening in Italy ?

resoectfuliy speaking , you can’t call your travel company and push out your date until Italy’s issues calm down ??
I am only focusing in on your travel date and nothing else as you need to know you are choosing to enter a hotbed of health issues in a country .
Your choice could impact others .
I’m asking kindly here , human being to human being ... please call your travel company .

She doesn't have corona virus or anything contagious. You are anything but respectful to discourageous people so directly not to cruise. You could be the carrier and getting on board with corona virus and spread it yourself. People with weake immune system know their body and should discuss it with their doctors and it should be their choice. Not yours.

These people are not a greater risk of spreading this virus than anyone else. As soon as they catch it, they will get ill quicker and reduce the chances of spreading. These people are not the ones you should be afraid of. The healthy people are the 'enemy' for cruising safely, as they don't know they have the virus.

You are clearly overcome with fear, but it is wrong to project your fear onto others. With how the situation is now all over the world, the best thing is to avoid human contact to not catch coronavirus and that goes for all people, not just those with a weak immune system.

Q -
Respectfully speaking, are you aware that her own Doctor advised her AGAINST going on this cruise in May 2020?
Therefore, respectfully speaking, her actions are her and hers alone....
until it impacts others.

Again, her own Doctor said DON'T GO ON THIS CRUISE.

Again, common sense needs to prevail here as i feel she has an obvious underlying health issue and is defying Doctors orders.
Its this kind of not using common sense that could cause people like you and I to be quarantined - having to prove that we are negative.

Again, common sense needs to prevail here -
If I had an underlying health issue, you had better believe i would push out any travel date until I am better able to handle the trip

but she is choosing 1) not to do this and 2) enter into a country that now has border closures due to this health issue.

Again, common sense needs to prevail here -
And to you I state if you feel comfortable being traveling with people making poor vacation decisions, great - I am respectful of you.

To put it to you in a different way and to express hopefully in a way so you wont think Im being mean, heres some logic I just learned in the last 5 years -
1) that its not a good idea to go to your local Walmart during the week of Christmas NOR Thanksgiving and I learned that the hard way. Spent dang near 2 hours just trying to but a jug of bleach. I ended up having to leave (flee?) Walmart with NO BLEACH.

Ok..... wisdom learned - I wont do that again.

but... here - I would never go on a vacation KNOWING that 1) I have an underlying health condition and 2) I am entering a region of the country that could worsen my underlying health condition and make my fellow travelers susceptible for quarantine.

Now did I say DONT GO? No i did not. What i said was could she call her travel company and have it pushed out a ways until this issue calms down??

Friend,,, I would do the same for you if "the shoe was on the other foot."

Again, just my .02 worth -

You seem to be cloaking your fears as concern for others.

1-She said her dr was nervous, not that she was told she shouldnt go. Those arent necessarily the same thing.

2-Shes not going for more than 2 months from now. If we look at China the worst of it was over in about a month. It's very possible Italy wont be a problem then.

3-Someone with underlying health issues isnt more likely to spread COVID-19 as far as anyone can tell. And it is very likely the opposite is true. That those with underlying health issues will become sicker faster and therefore give warning to stay away. The reason bugs with very high mortality rates die out pretty quickly is because if you are gravely ill, you arent out passing around the sickness.

4-Beyond all of that, Id expect someone that is immuno compromised to be much more likely to have better hygiene as it is essential to being able to keep functioning day to day. I'd (almost jokingly) suggest that a boat full of immuno compromised people would likely be the safest cruise you could take right now.

All that said, I am in a very similar boat. My choice will likely be to cancel our vacation before the deposit only penalty runs out. But that's based more on me being adverse to the financial risk rather than thinking that cruising in May is absolutely a horrible idea and there is no chance that will change before May. For me its the difference of losing $400 vs $4000.

OK - I'm sorry but no where did she say WHERE her cruise was going. All she said was that she was going to live her life and go on her cruise in May - totally her choice.

At this point it seems to me that maybe cruising isn't for you. You have no control over anyone else but you can control YOUR choice. It might be best for you to just cancel your cruise and then you won't have to worry about the decisions others are making.

Good luck to all as we all make our own personal choices in regards to the corona virus -

peace out y’all

You seem much more concerned about how this will impact you than how it will impact your friend. It looks like there is a 6-7 month window between when she'd cruise to Italy than when she would cruise with you. You're not going to catch it from her, you're going to catch it from someone else

The elderly and frail have been more vulnerable since the beginning of humanity. This is absolutely no different. Everyone should stop panicking, wash their hands and focus on the anti-vaccine lunatics to prevent the return of seriously dangerous diseases.

Every cruise ship on every sailing is going to have someone on board with a weaken immune system.

I feel at this point there have been more than enough responses on this matter. I am going to lock the thread before it gets more heated.
