Or can I do?
Story first. I work as a salesman in a Insulation business and have been for over 10yrs. and we are commission based salary. I switched to another branch that is closer to my home 3yrs. ago and started from scratch. New territory means you work twice as hard as the one you been dealing with contractors for a long time. But after them 3yrs. I'm doing VERY good in my sales so good I beat my boss (branch manager) by double a month.

Now my problem. We got so much work going on we just can't handle because of lack of employees. So 1/4 of the time I am in the field working to cover the load. During the week I get a set salary although I can pull 70hrs a 5 day week that turns out to be on the average to be about $6 a hr.,but on the weekends I get the piece rate for what I hang.

Here is the real problem I got. My boss thinks I do nothing!! When things get real busy he does a Jeckel & Hyde to me. Nice when things are going smooth to cursing and yelling at me for NO reason what so ever.I am a cool headed person but there is a breaking point that everyone has. When he calls me names,a liar and lazy I'm like ***!!

I talked to the owner about this too no avail before and today was almost my breaking point. What can I do?

Quit.

It sounds like you're very good at sales (doubling your boss' numbers). I'd "sell" yourself to another company that appreciates you.

I can work for any company I want but you lose face value when you jump around in contractors eyes. I sold them on the company's longjevity and quality of workmanship.

Is there any laws against this treatment?

I mean, unless he's physically abusing you, it becomes a very "he-said, she-said" case as far as him calling you names. As far as you working that many hours for little pay - I have friends that work in sales and there's no rule to how much or how little they work - since they get paid on commission it's up to them. Typically those that work more are rewarded more.

Can I just say, however, that if I were an employer interviewing new hires, I would have a lot more respect for someone that left a job because they were undervalued and mistreated than I would for someone that just put up with crap for 3 years because they were worried about how it looked. Especially in sales, I would want to hire someone that takes initiative.

I also wouldn't consider 13 years with one company - 10 years at one branch and 3 years at another - to be "jumping around" if you choose to pursue something else.

There are no laws against your boss being a jerk. Don't just quit, find a other job before you leave. It's much harder to find a job if you don't already have one.

Thank you all for your feedback. Guess I'm up the creek without a paddle where I'm at.

It doesn't sound like it happens there but I know up here we have a labour board that this stuff can be reported to if the big boss in the company will not do anything to remove this type of behaviour from the workplace. You should call your local city hall or whatever you have and ask if they have anything like this for your area.

Tell your boss what you think of him. Some people need to be put in their place, even bosses. When I was 19, I had a part-time job with a boss who liked to call everyone "stupid". I avoided it for quite a while, but eventually he called me stupid - once. I let him have it and but good. Not only did I keep my job (which admittedly, I was fully prepared to lose), he was never disrepectful toward me again. Everyone else? Well, they were still called "stupid".

Fast forward several years and I had a coworker (comparable pay grade) who was nasty toward everyone. So, I let him have it. Not only was he never nasty to me again, he practically kissed my keester on a daily basis. Never quite figured out if he was afraid I didn't like him, or if it was some sort of respect thing for the handful of people who stood up to him.

I'd be looking for another job and when I found one, I'd tell my current place of employment exactly the reasons why I was leaving.

You start your own business is what you do. If you are in Central Fla I can give you a fair amount of leads.

I would probably have a "sit down" when he is in a "good mood" and not when he is a raving lunatic.

Say something like, I am sorry you think I am lazy & a liar. I would tell him there is some kind of disconnect going on here because I am neither of those things. Why don't we discuss it and come up with a better system of accountability so you will be better aware of my time.

When he calls you names I would just say I do not appreciate being called names and ask him directly to stop.

I would follow up with I enjoy working here at this company and my job are things I do well and strive to be better everyday.
