Hi all!
I could really use some advice on this one. I am an art teacher at a school. This is my second year teaching at that school. It's a small school and last year they had vans that you could use to take field trips and use to go out with the kids. Since the vans were normal vehicles you did not need any special license to drive them. This year the school got small school buses to use. To drive a school bus you need to get certified for a CDL.
The principal asked for volunteers to learn and get certified to drive the buses and so I volunteered. Volunteering gets me some good thoughts by the principal and he is very appreciative of everyone who went through it. Getting the CDL required a physical exam (school paid for), TB test, drug screening, 8 hrs of class and 20 hours of driving practice.
However, I just recently learned that after I get certified to drive the bus my entire driving license would change to a CDL. Right now as a regular driving license you can get up to three violations and be able to take classes, etc, before having your license taken away. With a CDL in Illinois if you get two tickets in one year your license is suspended. This counts as two speeding tickets, accidents, going through a stop sign, etc....
I need my drivers license to get to work. There is no public transportation that would take me there. I should not be too worried because I have never even gotten one traffic ticket since I started driving ten years ago but you never know! I even know someone who got two tickets less than an hour apart.
I do not want to debate about the ethics of speeding or anything like that but I do live in Chicago where drivers are notoriously aggressive so it happens from time to time.
Should I still go for it and please my principal or should I say no thanks, too risky?

I think I will take the class and see what they have to say about violations.
