WWYD - Pre-School

She had the same additude when I reminded her that my son was not to have ice cream - See on, Fridays, they have pizza day. You pay, and your kid gets pizza and ice cream or a fruit pop. I checked the "fruit pop" box because my kiddo gets an upset stomach from ice cream. Well, two weeks in a row of him coming home with diarrhea I put two and two together, and asked him if he had been having the fruit pop or ice cream - He tells me they didn't offer him the fruit pop, and just gave him ice cream. So the next day, I went to the school, and gently reminded the teachers aide that he can't have ice cream, please give him the fruit pop, and if your out, just don't give him anything. So that afternoon at pick up, the owner comes up to me, and loudly says "So I heard you FREAKED OUT about the ice cream." Then went on to tell my son that HE need to be responsible and remind her that he can't have ice cream.... Now, I'm all for kids being responcible, but really?? These kids are 3-5 years old, and I'm paying YOU to do this, not my kid! I also informed her that I did NOT "freak out" about it when talking to the teachers aide, and that I have every right to make sure my child is not constantly given something that makes him physically ill.

Geeze, I really wish I hadn't posted this on here - The more and more I think about it, the more I want to take him out of the school....

Man up, put on your big girl panties, whatever. This is parenting. It frequently suuucks! You know this is not a healthy situation for your child. End of story.

You need to report the medication issue to CPS (or the licensing agency for pre-schools/daycares in your state) AND take your child out. They obviously do not have his welfare as a priority.

ETA ~ OK, I am wondering if OP is a troll. Her only other post that I can find is about staying on-site or off-site and in that she mentions two daughters, both over the age of 6. No son, and no kid young enough to be in pre-school.

You know what you have to do. It might be unpleasant. It might even be expensive. But you know what you have to do. So do it now before something bad really does happen.

Insane! What an irresponsible woman. She has no business working with children!

1. Take the child out of school, immediately.
2. Let other parents know.
3. Call CPS. I would also call the police nonemergency line. (But I live in a small town and we all know each other - mainly I would be calling to ask if they thought they needed to know about it, not necessarily to file a police report.)
4. Document the whole thing and send a letter outlining your concerns to the Board of Directors/Trustees/whoever oversees the school.

What a disaster! I'm glad everyone is okay!

Thanks but no, not a troll! lol When we go to Disney again, all of my kids will be older, because we can't go again till the fall of 2013, hence yeah, they will be over 6.

You need to take him out! I know it sucks...I do...I am taking my two youngest out of school as of the end of this month because of a few issues that seem trivial in comparison to this.

You need to give notice that your child will be leaving the school and inform the owner that you expect a refund of the remaining tuition. If she gives you any lip, I would tell her that it's the refund or you are calling CPS about her sending home random cough meds in backpacks. Once you have the refund in hand and your son is safe, I would still turn her in. She is playing with fire and unfortunately, an innocent child is going to be the one to get burned if someone does not report her.

No need to "freak out". Call the preschool director and let her/him know about the bottles you found.

:thumbsup2

I guess I wouldn't have given it a second thought. I would have figured samples of something someone thought was a good product. Calling CPS? Outrageous.

I also do feel the kid should be able to speak up about not being able to have the ice cream. My 4 year old has a sensitivity to tomato products. He lets EVERYONE know that he cannot have pizza, spaghetti, ketchup, etc. If it's being served, even if it's not being served TO HIM, he lets you know that he can't have it. However, now that you have "freaked out about it" to the teacher...if they do give it to him again, I would be a little more vocal.

I think there is a lot of over reaction on this thread. If you don't want the sample, trash it. If you don't want your kid to have ice cream, tell him to speak up.

Seriously? Can I ask you, do you (or did) keep the medicines out of reach of your pre-school aged children? I did, for a darn good reason and I would have a huge issue if someone gave my 4 year old some unknown medication just because they deemed it safe. If they want to hand out samples, makethe available to the parents, you don't put them in the backpack of a 4 year old.
And while I would be the first to say calling CPS is an over-reaction, I totally agree that is the right thing to do in this case. If this day care provider is licensed there may very well be rules against this, and if so then it is definitely something that needs to be reported.

One incident wouldn't concern me. The fact the owner dismissed the incident and seems to have a pattern with these types of issues concerns me.

.

Seriously? You wouldn't give it a second thought if a teacher sent your preschooler home with medicine?!? I'm a pretty laid back parent (see the thread on the age at which kids can play outside, where evidently I'm terribly negligent! :rotfl:) but no - I would not be OK with a teacher giving my kids samples of medication, regardless of how "all natural" they are. Not to mention the fact that it is most assuradly agains the law and the licensing requirements! I got forms yesterday that I had to fill out before DS's preschool could give him sunscrean! No way would she have anything ingestible around the kids without all sorts of paperwork and permision.

I don't know if CPS is the right organization in the OP's area - she should call whoever licenses daycares in that area. I think it's under CPS in some places, although there's a whole separate division where I live.

Ok, I'm glad you guys are on the same page as me!
I did call yesterday, and spoke with the owner. Its a small private pre-school, only 3 classes, and there is one owner (she is also one of the teachers). I called, and left a message saying that we received some mini bottles of cough medicine in my sons backpack, and I was worried that it was ment for someone else. She called back about 15 minutes later, saying that they had these little sample bottles at the school for months now (I assume brought in by another parent), but she didn't know that "she" (don't know who the she was talking about, I assume one of the teachers helpers) was putting the meds in the backpacks, rather she thought it was just the samples of Nutella chocolate that they have been shoving in my kids backpack since before the new year.
She also went on to tell me that they were not dangerous at all because they are "all natural" blah blah blah. I don't know, its all really leaving a bad taste in my mouth - I don't like it at all. And I especially dont like the fact that she just tried to write it off my saying "Well, I'm sure he couldn't get the safty seal off, and even if he could, and drank all of the bottles, its all natural, so I'm sure he would be just fine."

That level of dumb is downright dangerous.

No way would that level of dumb be watching my child.

Foxglove, for example, is natural. But I wouldn't want my kid eating it. And peanuts are natural, but there are some kids who could die from eating them. Seriously, this woman is an idiot and her idiocy is dangerous. I'd be outta there.

She has told her son to refuse the ice cream. Thus far he has been unable to do so.

Samples of something someone thought was a good product? To be distributed through preschoolers? School with a side revenue stream.

Calling CPS outrageous? A phone call to the licensing board will definitely bring in an investigator, period. Guaranteed they won't think it's an outrageous response on OP's part. In my area daycares and preschools are licensed through the state via social services and CPS is a part of that social services umbrella, however not involved in the licensing. When my DD's were in preschool the inspection involved such miniscule details as plastic silverware being bundled in sealed plastic bags, one type of utensil to a bag, with all utensils facing the same direction. Seriously.

You think a licensing board is going to look away from a school sending home unsolicited samples with no parental notification? Not a chance.

Overreaction? Don't think so. And this is from a mother who has allowed her children to use public restrooms unsupervised for many years and play in our backyard unsupervised also. My older DD had the good sense in kindergarten to tell her table's fifth grade peer pal no way when she wanted to spray breath spray in her mouth. Her tablemates caved under the pressure. I'm sure it was just breath spray, but it was a relief to know she had the guts to tell this older girl to pound sand. Her younger sister, different type of girl. Many types of situations I know she's got the backbone to stand up for herself, other situations are an ongoing discussion. She'd have let the fifth grader spray her.

What message are preschoolers getting from their school sending them home with "medicines that are healthy and natural" and other types of samples without any communication at all? That is a school that clearly doesn't have the message or even the common sense I want influencing my kid.

OP from what you said, this preschool has a pattern of showing very poor judgement with very young children. Not cool. No way would I think twice about taking my kid out of there. There are too many really good preschools around...and clearly this ain't one of them.

DO NOT GIVE THE MEDICINE BACK! Tell them you will call CPS and whatever group handles licensing if they don't fork over a refund of your prepaid tuition and you'll get that cash soon enough. Once I had cash in hand, then I'd turn them in anyway.

My thoughts exactly! My kid would be out of that place so fast your head would spin!! I'm speechless over this! Obviously this wasn't an accident! Wow! I would be livid!

One incident wouldn't concern me. The fact the owner dismissed the incident and seems to have a pattern with these types of issues concerns me.

:thumbsup2 This. We moved my DS because of a milk problem -- DS's system as a toddler couldn't handle whole milk -- it had to be skim or he would have the runs (which, in turn, would result in a call to me at work saying he is sick, until they remembered that, yes, they forgot to use the milk I provided for him).

Nonchalant attitudes toward what toddlers are ingesting seems indicative of a larger-scale problem regarding details and protocol -- while I wouldn't call CPS, I'd move my child to another provider.

As a person who ran a day care and hated every time a parent got mad and ran to the state, THIS situation is one I think needs to be reported.
Parents call over silly things, but medicine in a back pack is serious.

I would write a letter to all the other parents letting them know about what happened (in case they didn't get or haven't found the bottles). Then I'd move my child to another daycare.

I had to do something similar when DD19 was in preschool. I'm so quiet and polite--it was pretty shocking that I ended up with the daycare threatening to call the MPs on me if I didn't take my letters and leave.

Why do people think "all natural" = safe?

Things that are all natural:
Hemlock
Poison Ivy
Marijuana (its a plant)
All other poisonous plants

Thank you!! My wife gives anesthesia for a living and after a scary situation some years ago she now alway ask what "natural" supplements people take. The one her patient was taking at the time, in combination with her anesthesia, almost made her heart stop. Many, many medicines start as a discovery from plants and then get refined from there.
