I got a call on my voice mail from a humane society in another part of the State seems they have a dog there whose microchip had our information it.

I know this is our old dog that we gave away years ago. We couldnt keep her because we didnt/dont have enough room for her. We gave her to a family who lived on a farm with 6 kids so I thought she would be fine. Well apparently she either ran away or got lost from them. I told them that she was chipped and the info needed to be changed. I guess they never did that.

I have alwasy felt guilty for giving her away. I just felt like we gave up on her too soon but she had real attachment disorders. She needed someone there all the time and none of us could do that.

I have no idea how to reach these people anymore. I dont even remember their names.

What do I do?

I want to call the humane society and let them know that she isnt ours any longer but would they put her down? Im not sure I could live with that :(

I really dont know what to do!

I would call and let them know the situation. They can't adopt her out to anyone until her chip info is resolved. Ask them what their policy is about putting dogs down. We have places here that will not destroy animals who are healthy. Work with them for the good of the dog.

If you have the means to keep her, than do. If the other family contact you about the dog you can let them know that she is safe with you. Until then, you can both enjoy yourselves, again. :goodvibes

That stinks!!! :grouphug: New house, new baby, maybe it was fate :confused3 :grouphug:

We have a different dog now. Im not sure how she would react to another dog.

I dont know that we could take care of her.

Go get the dog!!!!!!!!! He NEEDS you :dog2:

Well I called them and they said she is with the guy who found her and that she seems to be in good hands. She is not far from the area that the family lived in ( like I said I know they had 6 kids and a farm and I knew the general area they were in)

She is in good health doesnt seem to have been neglected or abused and so probably got out. I passed on what information I knew and asked her to please call me if nothing else could be done. If they dont find a home for her or find her owners they will call here.

So she is not at the humane society, she is being fostered. The lady said that they checked her out yesterday and she was very quiet and well behaved.

Gosh,, I cant believe how sad that made me to think she might have been hurt or in trouble. :( I thought I had gotten over giving her away. I guess not.

:guilty: :sad1:

I bet if the other family really loved the dog or took him to the vet for that matter then the chip info. would have been updated.
I would see this as a second chance to give this poor dog a home again.
I think though you have to follow your heart on this one.
Maybe you can atleast take him in and find him a new home again if it doesn't work out.

Binny,

You do what you feel is right. There is a reason you gave away the dog in the first place. If you truly feel that you should do something, then call the HS and let them know that the new owners had failed to update the info on the chip. We all have reasons for why we have to give up animals, I really don't think anyone enjoys doing it, but don't do anything that you don't want to do because someone makes you feel guilty about it.

Not to start a debate, but maybe they never thought of it :confused3

Could be. I just know that my vet always asks if we want to microchip our new pets when we get them and bring them in for shots. Maybe thats not a routine thing for Vets to do and ours just does it.
But I guess there are many ways to think of the situation.

Well, since you asked what I'd do, I'd go get her. Then I'd check the lost ads for a while, and place a found notice at the shelter and in the paper. Then I'd try to find a new home for her if the other people didn't get in touch. If I couldn't find her one, I'd keep her.............but that's what I would do.

That is something. Me being a little superstitous would take it as a sign that the dog should be with me. But that is just me. You asked for advice, so in your situation, I would call and make sure they won't put him down if he stays for so long. I would take it upon myself to try and find another owner that would be perfect for the dog. Good Luck!!

well, I disagree with some of the people here. I think admitting that you are unable to care for the dog right now is huge. Giving a dog a bad life is really not doing the dog, your present dog, or your kids any favors.

She seems to be in good health, is being fostered, and is not in any danger. I know you feel badly, but if your circumstances make you unable to give the dog a good home -- then she is probably in the place she needs to be right now to find that good home.

MTCW?
If you don't want the dog, don't take the dog. I wouldn't let anyone guilt you into it on here. You gave the dog away for a reason. Just because the chip wasn't updated doesn't mean it was fate/destiny/meant to be, etc. The dog seems to be in good hands, so I really wouldn't worry about it too much more.

Oh, I didn't see this post. In that case, I would do what you did. Give your info and ask for a call if she doesn't get home or find a new one.

Thanks :) I appreciate all the opinions :)

I will leave it as it is right now. If I dont hear anything back in a week or so I will call back and make sure she made it to her home ok.

I dont want to go and get her and then have her new owners forever wonder what happened. The little girl ( at least she was little 4 years ago) became immediately attached to Angel she fell in love with her from the start.

The humane society said they would do everything possible to find the owners. I guess thats all I can ask for.

Depending on the microchip, they might not be able to update the information so I don't think it's a reasonable leap to think outdated information = people who don't care about the dog.

I microchipped our female beagle in FL and have been unable to update her information. Why? Because her tag with the microchip information fell off and that chip is not used around here so the wands the vets and animal control use cannot pick up her chip so I can have the information changed.

Binny I think you are doing the right thing for your family and it's normal to be sad.
