Ok, I may be just going over the deep end on this BUT I really need to get some advice....my DD (almost 10) has been getting bruises from literally anything (ie. just hitting her arm on a chair, etc), this weekend she was at a sleepover and we noticed last night hat she had two really ugly bruises on one of her legs :scared1:. I asked her how she got them and she said that she thinks that it was when she slipped on the loft stairs on Sat. night - her friend has the loft-type bed. Then she has also been complaining that she's always tired-this past week she even took a "nap" without telling us, just went to her room and went to bed and has been sleeping till late even on the snow days. Just now, I got a call from her teacher-she was concerned that my DD was saying that she was tired. This is the type of child that is always jumping off the walls and that is not happy unless she's running around, so this is a BIG change.

I've made a doctor's appt. for after school - so, am I just getting paranoid or am I right in being concerned?!

No need to panic, but I would definitely go to dr. and insiste on blood work.

Its very good to check things out. there are lots of reasons why this could happen, and some of them are fairly innocuous and common with young women... So it is definitely a good idea to get checked - no reason to get paranoid - just see what hte doctor says. I would not be surprised if the dr decides to do some routine bloodwork... Just to give you a headsup based on my experiences with doctors. I am not a medical professional, so this is based only on my experiences...

I second the blood work. It sounds like it could be anemia.

This--my younger daughter was bruising easily and I had her checked just in case.

I had a friend whose son experienced this at a similar age and she had him checked. In his case, it was leukemia.

However that doesn't mean it will be anything.

My dd is just a klutz. She had no health issues that caused her bruising. (She was about age 4 at the time I had her checked.)

I think you're doing the right thing.

I was/am an easy bruiser. Often the bruise looked way more horrific then what the injury called for.

I agree on the bloodwork.

To lisa - Is your daughter very bendy? I buised easily and I was called a "klutz" and it turned out I have a rare collagen defect causing loose joints, which made me fall a lot. It also causes easy bruising. Its a very underdiagnosed problem, so I am always on the lookout.

You are right. I'm glad she has an appointment! Please let us know how she makes out.

I too would get this checked out-I have a student who had this happen and her doctors called it something (MRR..?????) I can't remember but it's 3 letters and they are treating her with a form of chemo but tell her parents it's NOT cancer....she has to go weekly for bloodwork to check her cell count. She acts fine but the bruises she gets are horrific! Just to be safe-have bllodwork-for peace of mind alone!

Don't people with a vitamin K deficiancy bruise easily? Bloodwork will verify the vitamin K level as well as many others.

ITP--idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. The name sounds horrible, but it means the body for whatever reason starts chewing up platelets (the blood cells that help blood clot). That's why the bruises appear so easily. Some kids also get nosebleeds or bleeding gums. The white cell and red cell counts are normal in this condition. It is very treatable.

I agree your doctor will probably do a CBC. Let us know what you find out and try not to panic in the meantime. :grouphug:

Thanks everyone, you are the greatest support :thumbsup2. My DH said I was just being paranoid but I'm just concerned. We have a 3:45 pm appointment so I will update everyone as soon as I get back.

Glad you are taking her in. CBC is likely. Let us know!
(ask for Lyme titer)

So glad you are taking her in. I had my son checked multiple times for easy bruising and it was nothing but anemia which is an easy fix. I am a bit paranoid though, since I have a sister that had leukemia. Usually, according to my pediatrician, it is nothing serious. Good for you for trusting your instincts.

Op, she sounds like me who is low in iron and can't donate blood because of it.

Hope he check-up goes well and it is nothing BIG.

Glad you are taking her in. It definitely can't hurt to get it checked out. :thumbsup2
