WWYD - (Christmas gift and budget related)

I have personal experience buying the bargain bin games. One was an Acme Bugs Bunny game that I thought she'd go nuts for, but it's never even been opened....

This year she's asking for Disney Universe... and she's getting Disney Universe. :)

I would do this on purpose just to see the look on his face! One year my brother and sister, who are much younger than I am, had asked for a playstation 2. My husband still had the box to his playstation so we filled that with socks and underwear and wrapped it up. We made sure to be at their house early Christmas morning so we could see them open their big present, they were super excited because the box was heavy (wool socks are  ) and the exact shape of a playstation 2 box! We turn on the video recorder and the look on their faces as they see the playstation box are so excited, and then a few seconds later as they open that box and find sock and underwear it's just priceless! :rotfl2: Of course the real gift was hidden and brought out right after this, a brand new, ready to play playstation 2. We'd never do that to them if we didn't actually have the real thing, but the temptation to torment them for a few minutes could not be resisted. pirate:

Love it :rotfl:

I would give him what he asked for.

Growing up, I very seldom got what I specifically asked for and it was disappointing so I try my best to get the kids at least one item of what they asked for.

They are new release games (Kirby), so I don't think I can find them used.

You would be surprised how fast games get traded in. Give it a couple of weeks and I almost guarantee you will be able to find those games used at a Game Stop.

I'm going to go against the crowd here a bit.

I don't buy into the idea that wish lists are must-get lists. If he's getting a lot of other items on his wish list, then I'd be OK giving the cheaper games instead of the games he's asked for.

If, on the other hand, he doesn't have much else on his wish list, or you just aren't getting much else from his list, then I'd go with what he asked for.

Or...what I'd honestly personally do...I'd give him the cheap games and get Grandma to get him the more expensive ones :rotfl:

DS has asked for two specific games on his wishlist (one DS game and one Wii game). I bought them, and we can afford them. Total was about $80:eek:

Yesterday, while at Target, I found TONS of discounted DS and Wii games so cheap that I snapped them up to put in Easter baskets, for prizes, etc.... They were between 3.74-4.48 and 5.98-7.48. Now, he has not specificially wished for these games, but I started thinking. I could give him a DS game and a Wii game from this stash for around $12 at the most and return the pricey games. That's a $68 difference!

So, I'm curious, what would you do?

eta: He's getting plenty of other gifts, so these are the only thing on his list.

If all you asked your husband for was two specific CD's from your favorite musician, and instead he went to the Dollar Tree and got you two $1 rapping polka CD's instead because there was $28 difference, how would you feel?

I would give him the two games he asked for, keep the clearance games to pull out in the car on your WDW trip and if you would like to save $68, take back some of the other stuff that you bought for him that he didn't ask for.

I agree that a wish list is not a must-get list, but if I didn't want to get him the games on his list, I simply wouldn't get him games at all.

That poor kid. Give him the games he asked for! he'll be so disappointed. And trust me, those discount games in the bins at the stores are there for a reason - they are terrible! I made the mistake of doing that once. Never again! Go to gamestop and see if they have the games he wants used. that will save you some money, but for heaven's sake, don't upset him on Christmas. ;)

This.

$80 is too much to pay to make your kid happy on Christmas morning? That's just sad.

I'm assuming you're a troll, since this is a very trolly thing to say. But on the off chance that you're not - did you miss that he's also getting many other things? And even if that wasn't the case, has it not occurred to you that yes, for some people, $80 IS too much to pay? Because if you're truly that ignorant, then that's just sad.

In 1987 I asked for one thing for Christmas: a red leather Filofax. My mom got me one thing: a burgundy vinyl Buxton organizer. I was so disappointed! So I do make it a point to get my kid at least the one or two main things he asks for.

I would give him the ones he asked for. There are HUGE differences in games. It's like asking for two specefic books or movies, and someone getting you different ones because they were on clearance. It wouldn't be what you wanted to watch or read. Will he enjoy the others? Sure he might. But save them for the Easter baskets or some other time IMO.

OP - I got an email from TRU saying you get buy one get one game at 40% off. Not sure it's for the Kirby games, but it's worth a look--the deal seemed to cover all platforms. And so nice of you to pick up his old Kirby game, too!

Give him the gift he asked for.
