Well we're supposed to be leaving Saturday and our DD4 has been sick since Tuesday night. Fever hovering around 100.5 - 100.9, cough and sore throat. She went to the Dr. today and strep was negative (quick culture) but they're sending it away to be cultured longer. Results won't be back until Saturday (our departure date). Now we have 2 other kids, DD2 and DS7,both seem fine now. But our concern is if DD4 is feeling better tomorrow and we decide to keep our trip, DS7 and/or DD2 could be sick during our trip. We have trip insurance so we could cancel and reschedule.

So my DH and I don't know what to do-we're leaning towards canceling and trying October/November. Who knows...maybe we'll have the same dilemma then. I'm curious as to what you folks would do. Go if DD4 is better and hope others don't get sick. Or reschedule. Thanks for any opinions.

I am so sorry to hear that your DD is sick. I know how you feel. We seem to have this problem every time we go on vacation. For our trip last January DS (2) came down with a high fever the weekend before our trip. The good thing for us was that he had an ear infection and was able to start antibiotics early in the week. The bad thing was that starting on Tuesday (we were leaving Saturday) each family member got the stomach flu. The last one to get it was my DD (1) who got it on Thursday. We were lucky enough that by late Friday morning we were all feeling okay so we went on the trip and had a great time.

We then went to Disney again in March. On the last night of our trip, luckily, DS once again had the stomach flu. It was horrible having a sick child and not having the comforts of home.

So I guess my advice is that if your DD isn't feeling better by tomorrow you may want to cancel. I have been in October and the weather and crowds, or lack of, are great. If she is feeling better I wouldn't cancel just because someone else might get sick, but be sure to pack extra of any medicines you might need.

Good luck with your decision and I hope DD feels better soon. Let us know what you decide!

Thanks for the advice. Thats probably what we will do is wait until tomorrow and see if shes better. I sent a pkg down a week ago w/all kinds of meds (cold, allergy, fever,etc.). It arrived today at the WL...hopefully we'll be able to join it.

Thanks again!

It sounds like your DD probably has a virus of some sort. If it was strep, I'd definitely go - since antibiotics would make everyone better in 24 hours. With a virus, I'd base my decision on how sick she seemed. Her fever is not that high, so if she seems to do fine with Tylenol and etc. - I'd say go ahead and go and figure that if you all catch her cold, it won't really slow you down that much.

If it's more like the flu and she feels totally cruddy, whiny, and listless, I would probably reschedule.

I agree I think it is viral as well. Tonight her temp is down a little but she hasn't eaten since morning which I know as long as shes drinking shes ok. She says her throat hurts and her voice is hoarse. She doesn't have much energy at all. I guess we'll see how she does tomorrow.

I feel so bad because I planned such a great vacation for my kids - w/it past the 180 days for ADRs for October I'm not sure I can get CRT or CM. My kids have never been to disney so I guess as my DH says "they don't know what they're missing at this point." Plus VWL is not available for the week we would go in October so we would miss out on that as well. I know Disney has other great resorts...I just had my heart set on this one. Oh well at least we will be going to WDW either in 2 days or in 4-5 months.

Thanks for the reply.

Start giving them Airborne! I found the kids formula on clearance at Walmart this week, $2 for a pack of 10. I got 4 packs so my kids can start taking it a week before we leave and continue taking it throughout the trip. DH and I used it for our trip in Feb. and not only did we not get sick, but we had lots of energy too!

We just went through this same thing. We left last Saturday (the 5th) and I had to take my kids to the pediatrician on Friday morning. One tested positive for strep and got a shot and the other tested negative but the doctor went ahead and gave her an antibiotic b/c she just felt certain that she had it too. We went ahead with our trip and just had to take it slower on the first day. Actually out of the 10 of us that went, 4 tested positive for strep within 2 days of us leaving!!

You could always ask your doctor to give you a prescription to take with you incase the culture came back positive. That way you already have it if you need it!

Hope she starts feeling better soon!!
