Hello everybody.

I am getting a wisdom tooth removed next month. The oral surgeons office told me today that insurance does not pay for any sort of anesthesia other than local for one tooth to be pulled and if I want nitrous oxide it will cost $90.

Now, I have had teeth pulled before but they were baby teeth and no big deal. The tooth slated for eviction has not even come in properly, it is just one cusp sort of poking out of the gum so they are going to have to cut into my gum to get it out and then stitch it back up.

Is it worth the $90 for nitrous in this situation?

No anesthesia other than general for wisdom tooth removal?!?!? They knocked me out cold for mine. . .

I'd absolutely pay the $90 for nitrous. Or maybe even look for a sedation dentist and get some valium and something stronger . . .

Not general, just local. Meaning only novacain.

yeah, sorry, that's what I meant. That's insane to me. . . admittedly I have dental phobia, but everyone I know was fully asleep for wisdom tooth removal. The idea of removing a tooth with novacaine terrifies me. I'd pay $300 for nitrous . . . or honestly find out how much it'd cost me to pay for IV sedation without insurance. Maybe I'm just a big baby (okay, I KNOW I'm a big baby . . .)

I second pryncess527 and would get a sedation oral surgeon. It will cost more, but "out cold" is how it is in this house as well.

DD is getting dental implant surgery for 2 teeth in a couple of weeks. The sedation cost was quoted at 395.00. Total surgery cost is 4100.

I have had regular teeth and a root canal done with just novacain. It wasn't a fun experience but it was fine, though if I had it to do over again I would have asked for something more substantial for the root canal. But I am nervous about the wisdom tooth especially given that it hasn't even come in so I know they will be cutting into my gum to get it.

I had nitrous oxide for a couple of fillings once. That was nice. I took a nap. I woke up to the dentist and assistant having a debate about which of Rory's boyfriends were their favorite. They were Team Logan which made me question their judgement.

I got two wisdom teeth done with just the shots. I was wide awake the entire time and just kept my headphones in so I didn't hear it all. I don't do out cold unless it is in a hospital setting or a outpatient surgery center. I want to be sure that if anything goes wrong the people who can fix it are there so I don't go under unless 100% necessary.

Pay the $90!!!
I had mine removed with only a local numbing (had no insurance at the time); left side one visit, right side next, visit all were impacted to some degree.
I can see why people wake up with broken jaws and bruised faces!!

I had all four of mine removed -- three separate procedures, as an adult with only novacaine. I would do them all again the same way. Mine were removed as they started to break through the gums and were irritating.

I had 2 wisdom teeth removed that were already out (not impacted). I went to an oral surgeon (my dentist referred me) and I had an IV and nitrous. I was still awake - I knew what was happening but couldn't feel anything. Very loopy. I wouldn't have it done without (there wasn't a choice to have it without). Insurance only paid a portion. I had to pay the rest. And they don't let you keep your teeth.

Yes Yes and Yes........
I had a wisdom tooth pulled without it because I had to drive myself home after because I was dumb and didn't say no when the dentist told me it had to be done that day. He started it and couldn't finish I had to drive to a specialist in the middle, the tooth broke in pieces. It was a nightmare. I still have numbness on that side of my mouth 15 years later. I was recuperating for endless days.
Needless to say I never returned to that moron again.

Dd13 just had Novocain. It was just one, and not impacted. She was done in 20 minutes.

Definitely pay the $90. For me it felt like major surgery--both mine were impacted and took me about three days to recuperate.

For me, using nitrous is a no-brainer (bad issues with dentists in my youth). And $90 is a bargain. I've always paid the extra for nitrous at the dentist, when my insurance didn't cover it.

My first step would be with the insurance company to appeal the denial.
But for only $90, I'd just pay it if the appeal is denied.
I'm 59 and still have all 4 of my wisdom teeth so I have no experience with having them removed.

I did all 4 of my wisdom teeth with just local and there was no problem and didn't hurt at all while they were taking them out. My sister had hers out when she was 28 and again, just local and no issues. I was 25 when I got mine out.

I just had one severely impacted wisdom tooth removed with just Nitrous. I don't like to be put out. There was a lot of pulling and pressure but no pain.
