Just wanted to get some opinions...our daycare provides diapers and wipes for children. We have one parent who says her child is allergic to pampers. Hasn't been a problem until now, when pampers were the least expensive this month. So, should we do a take what the center provides or leave it maneuver, or buy special diapers for this kid?

DS' preschool doesn't provide diapers, so it's not an issue for us, but I would say if a family has a certain request for diapers or wipes, they should have to provide it themselves. Otherwise, you open a whole can of worms and all families are going to start requesting certain brands of diapers and wipes.

Agree, let them bring their own. Imagine every parents stating a different diaper, wipe, etc..

Yeah, that was my line of thinking, but I was just thinking that maybe I'll go buy him a pack of generics. (I always get name-brands). If they are diaper snobs, then I've given them two options (the pampers, or the generics) and then they can provide their own.

So do I understand it's something you provide for all the babies in your care? Was it part of the agreement, that you would provide the diapers and that is worked into your charges? Next month, if Huggies are on sale again, then you'll switch to that? If you provided Huggies or Luv's to this baby, why would any other parent have to know? I'm just curious.

Does the child have a true allergy to this diaper (Pampers) or do you think they are just saying that because they don't like the brand?

While I'm not for accommodating every little need, if this child is truly allergic to the diaper (and it can happen) and if your agreement states that you will provide this product, then I think you have to work something out.

No, I don't think you should give into people's whims and fancies on diapers and wipes, but if they are really irritating and it's no big deal for you to pick up an non-irritating brand, then I would just probably do it. Especially if they are good customers that you want to keep.

My son was allergic to Huggies so I know where these people are coming from. They caused him to have a rash a lot like Eczema. (Not sure how to spell that.) At any rate I agee with the idea that if you said you would provide diapers you need to accomodate him. You wouldn't require a child with pbutter allergies to bring their own lunch right?

Way back when my son was still in diapers, he couldn't wear Pampers. Everytime he'd had one on, he'd have a bright red rash. However, I'd provide Huggies for him myself, and ask that only the diapers I provided for him be used on him excepting for an emergency.

If a parent has a problem with a specific brand bought by the center, it becomes the parents responsibility to provide alternatives for their child, IMO. However, if you have a contract that states you will provide diapers, you do need to purchase alternatives.

I also provide childcare but I do not provide diapers and wipes. You should base your decision based on your contract. If your contract states you will provide diapers and wipes but you do not specify in the contract that they will be responsible for providing them if they don't want/can't use your brand then I'd say yes you'd need to provide a different brand. And if your contract does not say that I'd update any future contracts with that to be included.

I would say this month reduce their fees by the amount his Pampers would have cost you and ask that they provide their own diapers.

but yes, you need to go by what your contract states and if it doesn't state anything, then decide on a policy and put it in writing.

If I were you, I'd pick up a box of generics for this baby. Both of my kids had/have sensitive skin and I used Walmart's White Cloud diapers on them both, with no problems... nice diapers for the price, actually.

Wow, I've never heard of daycare providing diapers. If my dd had a problem with what was provided, I'd bring our own from home.

THe daycare center provides x brand of diaper. If that is not satisfactory please feel free to provide your own.

I think if they have problems with what you provide, then they need to provide their own.

I would agree with you if the contract said "I will provide Pampers." But it says "I will provide diapers." If the sitter switches off and on depending on what is on sale that week, I guess I don't see what inconvenience it would be to the sitter to stick a few in the closet that are not pampers for the times when Pampers are on sale.

I guess I don't see it as much different than a food allergy. You wouldn't make someone bring in their own cereal if their child was allergic to rice krispies, right? You would just have an alternative she could eat. My daughter does not like macaroni and cheese. My sitter makes her a sandwich on the days she chooses to serve it, she doesn't make me bring in an alternative.

If the contract said "I will provide diapers" and a parent insisted on a special brand, my opinion would be different. She is just requesting you not use a particular brand because of an allergy.

If it's in the contract, I think you need to provide this child with other diapers. DS was sensitive to the target brand. It was someting in the design. He got a red rash directly under the strip with the carebears on it.

I can't believe you provide the diapers at all! Isn't that the parents' responsibility?:confused3

I'd tell the parents they are welcome to bring the special diapers for their child's use only, and make sure to use only those for that child. Some kids really DO have terrible reactions to certain disposable diapers, or even ALL disposable diapers. I've seen some really awful rashes on babies who just couldn't tolerate the chemicals. Same with cloth diaperers using harsh detergents.

I am curious about cloth diapers...would you use those for a child in your care? A lot of my friends cloth diaper and said they had trouble finding daycare where they could use the cloth, even if there was a medical reason for it. Just wondering. We used cloth diapers as well but never used daycare so I wasn't sure how prevalent that is.

As a parent of a child on a somewhat restricted diet, I would NEVER expect anyone else to provide an alternate meal or treat for my child. It would be a wonderfully nice gesture, but I wouldn't expect it!

I cannot imagine expecting a daycare to pay for diapers other than the standard ones provided as a courtesy. Whatever happened to being responsible for one's child, first and foremost?:confused3
