WTH Mel??

If we're going to dislike people, I think it should be about their character, and not their creative license.
i can dislike someone for any old reason, and i think creative license in poor taste is a perfect reason to dislike them

I think that anyone can dislike anyone for any old reason too. But of course many of us may choose not to because of the movies they make or other such reasons.

The only part of this that troubles me are the anti-Semitic slurs. If he has been having emotional issues, I guess that could be a mitigating factor. I don't know really but I do know that this whole thing makes me very sad.

Uh, ok.

That is sad.

He may have apologized, but you know what is in his heart. :guilty:

I agree...very sad. I wish the day would come where we didn't hear so much about celebrities private lives, beliefs, political leanings. (obviously, that will never happen) Honestly, I don't want any more from them than their craft of entertainment.

Most are not living lives that reflect the 'average joe' anyways. Their lives are extreme, not too shocking that their beliefs are extreme too.

CBS News

A leaked arrest report quoted Gibson as saying "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asking an arresting officer, James Mee, "Are you a Jew?"

The entertainment Web site TMZ posted the document, which it said was four pages from the original arrest report. Harvey Levin, the reporter who first obtained the notes, told CBS News correspondent Vince Gonzales that the notes said Gibson was belligerent and attempted to flee. After being handcuffed, he allegedly also told the deputy he owned Malibu, before beginning a barrage of anti-Semitic remarks.

Sheriff's officials have declined to comment on Gibson's alleged remarks, but as Gonzales reports, the sheriff's department initially said Gibson was arrested without incident or special treatment.

This is exactly why I refuse to pay any money to see "Passion". I don't want to be "educated" on Mel's take of Christianity.

Do you know what is really great about this thread?
Nobody has offered to pray for him!!

If this is true, and I'm starting to think it is, it was just about the most awful thing to say.

The spin is that he was blind-drunk and saying things he didn't really mean, right? Is .12 that drunk?

You are very wise.

Considering his father was a well know anti-Semite and holocaust denier I think he ment every world. He was just too drunk to censor himself.

And actually .12 isn't THAT drunk. 0.08 is legally drunk but a lot of times people won't even feel drunk at 0.08. In some states I think the limit may still be 0.1.

A local radio station here does a bit where they have people do breathalizers and there have been people blowing 0.2+ Those people sound complelety hammered. But there are some that sound perfectally sober but are above the legal limit.

What gets me is that he has been doing work for the Sheriff office (like Public Service Announcements) and the office had let him "go" twice before (on dui charges mind you!) More fuel for the fire of the "celebrity status"...

and do read the reports from tmz.com - if you can stomach the words - Gibson is not disputing the words btw He said he was sorry "IF" I "MAY" have offended... that in itself is NOT an apology!!

and if he was a "TV" star, or a "B" list star - he would NEVER get any work - but because he is "MEL GIBSON" and obviously he "owns" Malibu... he is getting away with it!

I only hope that my neighbors - who have held him in SUCH high esteem as a Christian since he made Passion - are paying attention to this. Years and years ago Mel visited Dallas and I remember reading a lengthy interview that was published in the paper...it was clear that he was the sterotypical "male chauvinist pig"...haven't liked him since then. What kind of mind does he have that a rant about "the Jews" would come from his lips at such a time?

I do agree with the comment about not wanting to know about celebreties' personal or political beliefs.

Looks like he might have some pretty twisted and terrible views.

Does this mean people are going to stop liking and stop watching great movies like Lethal Weapon or The Road Warrior just because of this or look down on others who don't feel the same way?

I watch movies because I like them, not because I like or dislike the real people who happen to be in them.

I see what you're saying but I have to disagree with you in this case. I could see your point he if had followed the "standard celebrity routine" and had just bashed the President or something, but what he did was just plain evil. To hold views like this that are so extreme and hatefull, is just too much for me to swallow. I love some of his older movies but I'll never be able to watch them again in the same light as I did before. I gave him the benefit of the doubt about his father and his sick views as well, but I can see that father and son are more alike than Mel want's to admit. It just too much and a simple sorry on Larry King isn't going to make this go away. I don't see how he can recover from this, career wise that is.

Alcoholism is a terrible thing. So is anti-Semitism. I hope that Mel Gibson is able to get help for both. He obviously needs it if these reports are true.

When he was very young, he was just so beautiful. Tim. Gallipoli. Year of Living Dangerously. It's just so sad that he grew up to be such an arrogant whackaloon.

It won't change my viewing habits either way, but I gave up on Mel Gibson after Bravehart.

That's fine, but are you going to look at anybody differently if they still chose to watch his movies?

And just for the record, my opinion on this is the same no matter which direction of wacky their views take. For example, I'm not really fond of the extreme flower power stuff Michael Stipe likes to go off on, but I'm still into REM's music, especially the older stuff.

Speaking for myself, I generally don't care what people watch when I'm not in the room, nor do I usually ask for a report on all media activity from my friends, so no, I have no problem if someone wants to host a Mel Gibson filmfest...I just won't go. Not that I would have anyway; TBH, I'm with the poster who said she gave up on his movies after Braveheart.
