From my 6 1/2 year old DS this evening:

"Mom, are you the only person in the world without a boyfriend?? 'Cause even I have a girlfriend."

He didn't say it to be mean, his tone was more of sheer incomprehension. Still...

He asks me at least once a day, "Mom, when are we going to get a new daddy, so I can have a baby brother or sister??" What am I supposed to tell him, that Mommy can't just go to Daddies 'R Us and find a new and improved model... wish I could, LOL!!

But man, he hit a nerve... any other single parent out there wish to commiserate? Please??

Again, I am not single, but I can imagine how tough that must feel. Just tell DS that your most important job right now is to be his mommy.

It sounds like you are doing a pretty good job at that.

Awww! It's kinda cute, in a way, that he is concerned for you both. All you can do is tell him that hopefully, one day it will work out. However, right now, you are just sooooooo happy to have him that you are a whole family just the way you are. I'm married, no kids, BUT I am the daughter of a single Mom!! I was born in 1964, so I didn't know any other kids without 2 parents. My Mom had to explain the birds and bees to me at a very young age because kids kept telling me I was adopted, since my Mom wasn't married.
If it makes you feel any better, I got really mad at my Mom when I was 2 1/2. In a fit of rage, I ran out on the front porch and screamed, "You go down to the drug store, right now, and buy me a Daddy!!!" Of course, all my Mom could do was laugh!! Kids just don't get it. Remember it is the people in their lives that make the most difference, not the ones who aren't there!!! Good luck!!!

Diva -- LOL!!

It *was* sweet when he said it, especially the incredulous tone to his voice, but it just kinda struck a nerve, ya know? Because all I ever wanted in life was to be a wife and mom. The other stuff is just details to pass the time. (Note to self: Choose other person involved in that equation much more carefully next time!!) And Tyler Dean just loves babies soooo much.. all the little ones in the baby room at his daycare just light up when he goes in there. Of course, a few months after actually having a baby sibling of his own, he'd be ready to trade it in for a new Bionicle, but that's the way it goes.

I just keep telling him that I can't just find him a daddy or me a boyfriend -- it has to be someone that we both like and love, and that likes and loves both of us. Wow, seeing it spelled out here like that makes me realize what a tall order that is. LOL! But hey, nothing less will do.

I did the Daddies R Us thing with DS when he was about that age. I'd love to go there and pick out the perfect dad for him, but it doesn't work that way. He also wanted a little "brother." I said...what if you got a sister? No, he didn't want that! At 9 he no longer asks about it.

Oh! I also have a friend who has a 2.5 year old and a little one who just turned 1. When we visit for an evening the 2.5 year old LOVES to be with DS. DS finds him to be a bit of a pain. I remind DS that this is what a little brother would be like! DS no longer asks for a little brother.

I think it's sweet that he cares. I guess that was his little way of telling you it's ok with him if you get a boyfriend.
