Old Man of the Mountain profile falls
CONCORD, N.H.(AP) Most or all of the Old Man of the Mountain, a natural stone profile that symbolizes the state of New Hampshire, fell from the side of a mountain early Saturday, Don Bliss, the states director of emergency management, said.
Bliss told WMUR-TV that the profile apparently fell overnight. There were no injuries.
A Franconia emergency dispatcher also confirmed that a Franconia officer saw that the profile had fallen.
The profile is located in Franconia State Park to the West of Route 93, about 1,200 feet above Profile Lake.
It is one of the most photographed sites in the state.
The profile is about 40 feet tall and 25 feet wide and has been the subject of many poems. It appears on the New Hampshire quarter and on state road signs.
"You dont think about it much, but its what everybody comes to see, its our thing. And now its gone," said Eric Mueller, who works at Franconia Hardware Store.
Mueller said a customer stopped by to say that most of the profile was gone. Mueller said he planned to drive up to see it on his lunch hour.
Amy Bahr, president of the Franconia Heritage Museum, said she has long been aware that the natural profile could slide.
"I knew it would go sometime, I just didnt think it would happen in my lifetime," Bahr said
