Wow. NH Man of the Mountain collapses!

Oh wow, that's sad.. I did a lot of hiking around there when I went to camp in Vermont and we saw it many times. I never even thought that it might fall.

I can't believe my child will never see the Old Man in the Mountain! I've seen him almost every year! :(

:( We were there last Sept. Glad I took some pics. Never thought it would fall. Too bad. :(

How sad that something so seemingly solid could just fall apart. It will stand forever on NH's Statehood quarter.

I was shocked when I heard this this morning. It has always been such a great landmark in NH. It will be missed.

What a shock to read this! He's always been an icon in NH. :(

I've been going there since I was an infant. I guess it makes sense that it could happen but what a loss.

WOW, I too am in shock :( Glad I got to see it in person.

It is sad, but what mother nature gives us she can also take away. Here's a short story from our local newspaper from there we site. Just remember there is so many beautiful areas in the Notches, like the Flume and Lost River, if you're ever in the area you must visit these natural wonders.

Old Man of the Mountain profile falls

CONCORD, N.H.(AP) — Most or all of the Old Man of the Mountain, a natural stone profile that symbolizes the state of New Hampshire, fell from the side of a mountain early Saturday, Don Bliss, the state’s director of emergency management, said.

Bliss told WMUR-TV that the profile apparently fell overnight. There were no injuries.

A Franconia emergency dispatcher also confirmed that a Franconia officer saw that the profile had fallen.

The profile is located in Franconia State Park to the West of Route 93, about 1,200 feet above Profile Lake.

It is one of the most photographed sites in the state.

The profile is about 40 feet tall and 25 feet wide and has been the subject of many poems. It appears on the New Hampshire quarter and on state road signs.

"You don’t think about it much, but it’s what everybody comes to see, it’s our thing. And now it’s gone," said Eric Mueller, who works at Franconia Hardware Store.

Mueller said a customer stopped by to say that most of the profile was gone. Mueller said he planned to drive up to see it on his lunch hour.

Amy Bahr, president of the Franconia Heritage Museum, said she has long been aware that the natural profile could slide.

"I knew it would go sometime, I just didn’t think it would happen in my lifetime," Bahr said

This link has some pictures of before and what the OLD MAN looks like now.

Wow! Who would've thought that could ever happen...not me!

I've been there several times. I love New Hampshire!

That's wild. Luckily, no one was hurt in the collapse. You know erosion can change these natural formations but I never thought about a total collapse. Hopefully, tourists will continue to come to this area even without the "Man".

Im sad to hear the "man" collasped
I have reservations to stay at Indian Head, NH exactly 2mos from today! I was looking forward to showing DS the "man"

(seems when I have plans they dont go as planned)

This is really sad...although not unexpected.....Niels Neilson said for years the Old Man was in desperate needs of help....it's a very sad day for the Granite State.

On a lighter note....the ride to grandma's house is going to seem even longer....the Old Man was the halfway point for us...:(

This is so sad :(

I've always loved going to visit the Old Man - since I was a kid. DH & I were planning on taking a drive there next month, since he's never seen it.

I guess I knew it could happen, but I never expected it to happen so soon :(

I agree with you Boo'sMom, a very sad day :(
I attended a really interesting talk .about the Old Man given by Mr Neilsen around 15 years ago .......his son, who had taken over the dedicated efforts after Nils died, was on TV today all choked up :(

I look at the before and after pics and it seems to me the Stoic Yankee Old Man woke up and is really really mad. It looks like he is screaming at something. Maybe he is saying "No, No anyone but IGTD, can come visit me! I'm not going to allow it!":smooth: :p
