I gathered together a whole bunch of old stuff that's been buried and I'm going to send it off, goldfellow I think.

But I also have some jewelry... a ring with a bunch of diamonds in it, a necklace with an amythest, that I'm not sure what to do it. They may be worth more than their weight in gold. Any suggestions what I do? I'm really afraid of getting ripped off at a local jeweler.

I sold my hs class ring, (10K) 2 thin rings (14 K) small initial charm (14K) for $175. My Mom sold some larger rings and a thin bracelet for $450.
We went to a stamp/coin shop that has been around for over 20 yrs- they seemed pretty honest.

Tiny diamonds are worth about $3.00 per "point" in other words, not very much. As for other common gems like blue topaz and amethysts etc. They are worth a tiny fraction of "their weight in gold" maybe $5 or 10 dollars, and the gold buying services don't want your gemstones. Fortunately gems have very little weight compared to gold, or they would be DEDUCTING the weight of the stone in arriving at your gold value. If you can remove the stones and want to keep them, go for it. They'll pop them out anyway to get the accurate gold weight of your jewelry.

Wanted to let those in Southwestern PA know. I went to the Kapolkas Jewelry in West Mifflin another poster recommended on Friday. I called around first and got some prices so I knew what other businesses were paying and than I went there and he beat it. $600 for a pile of junk and my friend got $365 for a smaller pile of junk. And we did negotiate a little (well I did, my friend thought I was nuts) but he did come up a bit and we were all happy. Thanks everybody.

If you can open up the prongs and get the stone out, fine. If not, don't worry about it unless you particularly want to keep the gemstone. If you want to keep the stone but can't get it out, it might be best to sell the jewelry locally.

How can I figure out what is real and what isn't?

Almost all jewelry that's real gold, whether 10K or 14K, will be marked. 14K should be marked either 14K or 585 which means the same thing. Sometimes a piece will be marked 14K GF which means gold filled (like plated), or HGE Heavy gold electroplate etc. if still in doubt, take it to a jewelry store and have them check it for you.

Here is another idea, then. If you think your husband might object to selling the jewelry, perhaps because it's valuable and he thinks it would be best to keep it (and I can agree with that), you could convert the money from selling the jewlery into something else of similar value, such as gold or silver coins. If you take the scrap gold to a reputable coin dealer, they would likely give you the value of the jewelry toward something else in the shop like American Eagle silver coins or such.

DH had a piece from his mom that had a little diamond in it. He was insisting that the diamond was valuable, so I told him to put the piece back in the jewelry box. At the jewelry store we asked the guy about the stones and he said they really are NOT worth anything if they are small. The diamond we left at home would only have been worth maybe $5, so we would have been better off adding the piece in with our gold. Oh, well.

It isn't the value of the jewelry - it's the fact that he bought it for me. But I may just get him to take it to a jeweler so he can see the value of it.

I have a question for those who have used usgoldbuyers or goldfellows - were you given a breakdown of the amount you were offered piece by piece or was it just a lump sum for the whole bunch? If I have a lot, do you think I would be better off doing a little bit at a time?

For everyone worried about missing out on the high price of gold, it is over $1022 right now and probably will go up even more to the the financial mess on wall street tomorrow.

WOW! Now I'm kicking myself for selling most of my old jewelry a few years back and I think I got maybe $75 for all of it. I had 4 old gold rings, couple of bracelets, several chains, and a few silver rings. UGH! I think I still have some older pieces that is collecting dust. I have one 10K gold ring but I don't think I could ever part with it since it was my great-grandmother's. I think I will definitely keep it since it's just a gold band and would be great to have a stone put in it for ds or someone. I can part with pretty much everything else. My mom has a ton of old gold she never wears. She sure could use the money right now. I might have to let her know. Thanks for posting this and I had no idea.

Yes, I know goldfellow gives you a breakdown of how much 10K, 14K etc you had and how much they paid per dwt. I would think that usgoldbuyers does that too.

And yes they will buy white gold.

I was sadly disappointed. I broke down and mailed my stuff to US Goldbuyers, and while I was at Disney this past weekend, I got the call from them with an offer of $382. I of course took it. Checked my pay-pal about 15 mins later and the money was there!! Good Deal!

Paypal is set up by the email address you assigned it. For example, I have a friend that woes me $20. She is out of state and wants to paypal me it, so all I had to do is give her the email address I use for paypal. She then went to her account, and sent me the money.
