Wow, crazy expensive to pay for tolls now in Orlando!

This is terrible! As a local, I have never rented a car in Orlando so I've never heard of someone trying to tell tourists that there are no cash tolls left in Orlando. There are some tolls that are exact change only and I would plan for those, but I can't believe they would try to tell people that are only using the car to get to Disney and then get around while they are there that they have to pay for their prepaid toll thing. Am I the only one that is highly offended that a company would do that to make extra money off of tourists? That's a lot of money. I can't help but think about the people that fell for this and paid that much money when the most expensive route takes $2.50 each way.

I could be wrong, but isn't that fee charged IF you blow through a toll without paying, and the toll place bills the rental car place?

Yes. If you decline Dollar's toll pass, and then go through an electronic toll lane anyways and Dollar gets billed, they'll charge you a $25 fee plus the toll.

So, if you order a SUNpass there will be two transponders in the car.

Then dollar will bill you and Sunpass will bill you and you have to fight it out?

I am renting from national, do all their cars have transponders too? What a racket!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: there needs to be a sticky about this.

Take a look at this thread and this page.

Bottom line is that different companies have different policies for these tolls. National actually has a very reasonable service: $2.00 fee per rental day that customer incurs tolls, with a $6.00 maximum for the whole rental period, plus the tolls incurred.

We are renting from Alamo can someone clarify for me - we are picking car up in Disney Car Care Centre then returning it to Miami Airport. We are driving down via Vero, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Will we therefore not be able to use toll roads in some areas??? Do we need some sort of toll pass system help we go in 10 days from UK and havent heard that cant pay cash in some places before eekk

As long as you stay off the Homestead Extension and don't drive in the Sunpass-Only Express Lanes on I-95 (both in Miami), you can pay cash.

Alamo's tollpass is pretty reasonable though, they charge $2 a day to a maximum of $6 per rental, only on the days you use it, plus the cost of tolls.

Oh my goodness..scaring me now. I don't know the area at all. What is the best way for me to drive from Pompano using only cash on tolls? Is there a way to avoid tolls at all? Thanks leaving in 4 days:banana:
You know...for the life of me, I can't remember if we paid any tolls when driving to Pompano Beach a few years ago. I took the Florida Turnpike. Got off in Jupiter since that's what both mapquest and my gps told me to do..then get on 95. Biiiiiiig mistake. Going through the Palm Beach area was a nightmare for me. When I got to my dad's place, in Pompano Beach, he told me I should have stayed right on the Turnpike, that there is an exit about a mile or so from his place...he is right on the ocean if that makes any difference. So, from now on, I'll be staying on the Florida Turnpike.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...no more stickies. People just need to do a search..it's not that hard. No one reads the stickies we already have.

When we were there in June there were cashless tolls in some places. We did not have an electronic pass and quickly swerved but did not know what to do.

If by the word "there" you're referring to Orlando, there is only one exit ramp toll that is for those with transponders only. It's on the Turnpike and is unlikely to be encountered by tourists. All other toll plazas accept money and transponders. All mainline toll plazas are staffed 24/7. All entrance and exit ramp toll plazas on the Turnpike are staffed 24/7. None of the entrance and exit ramp toll plazas on the local toll roads (408/414/417/429/528) are ever staffed. At those you need to have coins or a transponder.
