WOW! 7 days on the DDP & SIGNIFICANT $avings for us!-even with credits left over!

Love your reviews so far.....I have a party of 6 with one being a child that eats like an adult. I did the dining plan 2 years ago when it was Free and included appetizer and tip. For 14 days we ate like Kings!! Without those 2 items I dont see the value anymore. We do like a sit down meal each day, but we dont need to eat 6 desserts at an added cost of say $30.00. I think certain restaurants you would break even or have savings, but most would not save us. We are going again in July and I keep comparing the costs of using the plan and not. At the present time, we will not.
Keep the reviews coming.....cant wait for more....

I am SO not a dessert person. I honestly thought I'd really be bumming about not having apps or a salad but the entrees were so filling that it was never, ever, an issue. Sure, dessert it something for all 6 of us we generally wouldn't do but, it was nice never having to say no. The one time I REALLY wanted a side instead of dessert, and couldn't trade, was at a CS meal. And that side counted as a snack credit so...we came back later and got it as a snack!

All that said...it paid off for us given the fact that we had 2 kids at the kid rate and did buffets and an all you can eat 3 out of the 6 nights. Had we been paying for 5 or 6 adults based on what we ate, at 5 adults we'd have still been ahead, at 6, just breaking even.

We could have ordered half the groceries we did for breakfasts had I really realized just how much food we'd be getting on the plan. The plan, without any supplements probably could have fed us for the entire week. I can't imagine the DDP but on the flip side I can't see, for us, how the QSP would pencil as we want to sit down whether it is at the cabin and I'm cooking, or at a restaurant but it was awfully nice to never feel like I needed to cook, even though I could, or had to pack lunches, even though I could. :)

Completely and wholly loving this-- thank you! DH and I each have been to Disney pre-1991. Our inaugural trip with our family 5/31-6/7 includes our four children ages 6-and-under, my mother, and DH's parents. The OCD in me has me planning (when Disney will allow:sad2: ) like crazy. I will stay tuned in to you. We all are so unique, and Disney just can't please everyone all of the time! All of my children love fresh to "fried," and desserts are not that impressive to any of us (SO would prefer an appetizer!). It still is a complete toss-up for us. Again, thanks!popcorn::

Fantastic! Can't wait to read more reviews!

Enjoyed your reviews!! We were just at Disney 2/15-2/20. Loved the DDP. Like you we did TS dinners to maximize the dollar!

February 14th, Valentines Day, started off just lovely. This was one of our "unplanned" days. We had 4 days planned around EMH at each park and 2 days that we had left open to do whatever people felt like. It didn't end up quite working out that way in the end, but that's another story.

Tink and I got up before everyone else and headed off to the GF Spa for a pedicure. We didn't have time to eat at the cabin before leaving and she really wanted to explore the GF. After our spa treatment we poked around a little bit enjoying the scenery and then headed over to the GF QS location, Gasparilla Grill.

Gasparilla Grill.
They had a very nice lunch selection to choose from and the place was pretty much empty which was a bit of a surprise. It was our first time seeing a resort QS location and it was really like a little mini food court with a sandwich and salad area, a grill area, beverage station, dessert station and then some sides sprinkled throughout. Very cute inside although frankly being located adjacent to the arcade seemed very un GF to me, the arcade really should be completely separate. We were going to eat outside anyway so it really wasn't a big deal.

Tink elected to go for a cheese pizza and I chose a Jamaican Jerk Chicken Wrap that was done with a whole wheat tortilla. They let us choose chips instead of dessert. I let Tink pick up a refillable mug (which she later lost but that is a another story, bummed about that) as I knew she would want more than one soda and I used her drink to get myself an OJ and another cup of coffee. With the rush out of the cabin I was running low on caffiene and while the Disney coffee, in general is hot brown and warm, it does not meet my coffee snob needs. But desperate times call for desperate measures!

My wrap was TO DIE FOR. Literally. Tender, juicy (almost on the verge of dripping) and filled with amazingly yummy jerk flavors. Not too spicy but a nice soft kick that let me know those flavors were there. Perfectly paired with the whole wheat wrap which was strong enough not to fall apart with all the juicy chicken inside. You could also have it with a bread option but I can't recall what that was, I was so happy to see the whole wheat wrap option I ignored the bread option. It was HUGE. I mean huge. I could hardly finish it but couldn't bear NOT finishing it! My side was pretty boring, Disney REALLY needs to expand their chip offering. We saw the same chips everywhere we went and while I can live without dessert, chips, good chips, are another story. Lays, BBQ Lays, Pretzels and Doritos are not my idea of a vast and interesting chip selection. But still, I preferred the lays to a dessert and I'd snagged a banana at the spa so was quite quite content with my dining that day so far.

Tink's pizza was a mini round personal sized cheese pizza that was made to order. Pretty basic and frankly, looked pretty small. The girl needs more calories than that in my opinion but she was perfectly content with that and a bag of Doritos. Ugh. We did get her to work on her eating habits later in the week but the first few days...shudder!

While eating Scrooge was texting away, they were on the boat to MK to meet us there. As it was a "free" day, I'd assumed we'd be heading elsewhere, EMH for MK was the next day but Scrooge thought it best to do MK as dinner was at the Poly and so everything was close. This turned out to be not such a good idea.

Scrooge and the boys got there ahead of us and headed straight to Space mountain, got fast passes and headed off to Cosmic Rays as they needed to eat. basically they'd been complete bums at the cabin while Tink and I were getting our toes done, so they were hungry. Tink and I grabbed our FP's and went to meet them. Did I mention it was Valentines Day? At the MK? During President's weekend? Oh...and that there was Twirlmania? The crowds were, literally, unbearable. Steven had headed in ahead of Scrooge to get his food and once I arrived Scrooge headed in to get food for himself and the 2 younger boys. After eons Scrooge came back with 2 sets of nuggets for the boys and a chicken sandwich for himself. Wall-E was less than thrilled, he'd wanted a burger but apparently the burger line was awful. All of them included fries, drink and a dessert which was either a cookie or a chocolate cake. Still no Steven. Called Steven, he was still in the burger line. Steven finally made it out, everyone ate. They seemed to think it was fine, looked pretty basic but edible to me. Stevens burger really didn't look worth the wait, but not bad either. The most amazing burger of the trip was yet to be sighted but was in our future. I decided now was not the time to brag about my amazing wrap and the lack of lines at the GF.

We didn't get to do much at MK, crowds were so bad we thought about hopping but instead after hitting a few things, and making a main street barber stop for Wall-E and Goofy we decided to grab a snack and head back to the cabin to get ready for dinner. We hit a cart by the Speedway after our Space Mountain run. Wall-E got a mickey bar, the first of many and was in heaven. Wall_E likes to make an "alleluia" sound when he gets excited about something and Mickey bars definitley insprired that sound. Too bad he can't ever keep the bar off the sides of his mouth! The kid cracks me up.

Goofy went for a frozen juice bar which he loved. Steven went in search of a smoothie. I'd brought the snack list with us and it was invaluable in the parks figuring out where to find items. That said, I can't recall if he found one! He may have had it while the younger boys and I were at the barber, we'd gotten separated for a bit, being stuck by the twirlers on parade and then the celebrations parade.
WDW_090214_0305.jpg

On the way out, Tink and I headed into the Main Street Confectioners. She'd read there was fudge to be had WOW. What a case of sugar. I am NOT a dessert person and I was impressed. Fudge, in many flavors, the size of my hand. A chocolate covered caramel the same size. Tink got fudge and while I can't recall which flavor she ended up with (as the poor thing was QUITE torn deciding) it was all chocolate. I snagged a giant caramel for Scrooge who is quite the caramel freak. This despite the fact that I'd had special caramels and a box of candy shipped from 2 different specialty stores and had given him those that morning. What can I say. It was Valentines day and the man is a caramel freak. I went for a toffee coated chocolate pretzel that was pretty decently sized as well.

YUM! I'm a bit surprised we actually didn't go back there again for treats as it was truly a fabulous selection.

Next...beers at the cabin and off to Kona Cafe...hint...my FAVORITE meal of the trip! (not everyone elses though...that comes later)

Yay! More reviews . . . great job!

I never though of getting a pedi at WDW, but that would be so much fun for me and DD to do together while the boys go off and do their own thing! Do you mind me asking how much it was? And how long it took? Thanks!

Sure! You can read about my "spa" experiences at the World here which covers the GF Spa for pedicures, WL for a massage and the Main Street Barber for little boy haircuts and pixie dust! I haven't done an acutal trip report but did update on the spa review page. I think it is around post #20 and 21 (pictures of the main street barber)

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1944332&page=2

Rates are posted here, just mouse over spa or fitness/massage and it shows you what each resort that has a location offers. I think there is about 8 locations to choose from combined. There is also an actual salon in the GF called Ivy Trellis and next time I'd probably explore that as well to find out their rates but they seem to be separate from the Niki Bryan locations. The pedi's were $65 each which was steep but it was definitely full spa treatment as you will read about and a very special thing to do with Tink so I am glad we did it. I let her pick the location out of what was available which is how we ended up at the GF.

http://www.relaxedyet.com/

We did one or two special things with each kid and I'm really glad we did that.

  • Tink got the pedicure
  • Wall-E and Goofy got the main street barber
  • Steven got to go on a searaycer for 90 minutes and to go watch the Richard Petty Driving experience (which was so loud we could hear it at the cabin!).
  • I got a massage
  • Scrooge got to go do a demo flight for a seaplane he is building in our garage!

So we all made out pretty well and really, the savings on the dining plan helped justify a lot of it!
:)

MK was so incredibly packed that we decided to hightail it out of there and go back to the cabin, grab a beer and change. Scrooge kept questioning me on how best to get to the Poly. I told him we either needed to do boat boat or boat monorail. To which he responded it was really bus, boat boat or bus boat monorail (meaning the FW internal bus). Which was true. For some reason he REALLY was having boat issues and didn't want to ride the boat again that day. Why, I have no idea. So upon his urging I called the FW front desk to confirm that there was not another way to get there. Big mistake. Big. HUGE in fact.

The very nice CM told me that it would be fastest to take a bus to the MK and then the monorail or boat to the poly. Bus/monorail pleased DH as we were within walking distance of the outpost main bus stop anyway and could avoid the internal bus entirely (again not sure why that was an issue but, whatever...he got over it as the trip went on). I questioned the CM on this, "really?" I said. "I thought you could only take the boat to MK from the Fort". "Oh no, there is a MK bus". says the nice CM "And it's really faster to go that way?" I questioned again. "Oh yes, well it's really a matter of whether you want an air conditioned bus or the open air of the boat (she thought this was rather funny). Ok fine. We'll take the bus and make Scrooge happy.

So...changed and refreshed with a nice cold Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, up to the outpost we go. And wait. And wait and wait and wait and wait. 2-3 of every other bus came by. No MK bus. Finally, 40 minutes later, I finally ask a nice DDT bus driver what the deal is and they look at me like I am insane and say.....

THERE IS NO BUS TO THE MAGIC KINGDOM!

Ok. It's Valentines Day, President's weekend. The world is PACKED. We are a party of 6. In the best of circumstances we can rarely just walk in anywhere, more or less in this situation. So we hightail it onto an internal bus to the Settlement and while on the bus I get on the phone to the Fort Front Desk and ask for a manager. I get put on hold. And then on hold again (they are looking). On hold again, they apologize for the delay. Finally, at least 5 minutes later, I get a manager. I explain the problem and that due to the misinformation (which I QUESTIONED as being correct and was assured it was) we were going to be very very late for our dinner reservation and that I needed him to fix it. He said he'd take care of it and call me back. Which he did. They held our reservation but we were all a little stressed at this point. Now. The positive aspect of this is due to advance schedules not matching the current ones while we were there we had been set to miss Wishes due to the time of our dinner reservation being right when it started. Thanks to the Fort front desk fiasco, instead we saw them from the boat to the contemporary (which is the route we chose, boat, then monorail) and they were magical! Arriving exactly 1/2 hour late we checked in and then had to wait another 15 minutes for our table. The poly was HOPPING!

I loved the energy and feel of the Poly. I think it was Steven's favorite resort. DH and I having been to Hawaii several times liked it, loved the food but other than it's amazing location do not have a strong desire to stay there. It felt dated but I think that's just us. I do like it though. Finally seated, we ordered.

Wall-E: Kids plate, fish of the day, with fries and a salad. Sprite

Goofy: Goofy and Tink "switched" kids TS for adult TS on the entree and he chose the Pan Asian noodles with shrimp. I gave Goofy my adult beverage and he got a berries go-mega (my FAVORITE odwalla juice) smoothie, the first of several of the trip.

Tink: Went for the kids mac and cheese and a coke. Lame lame lame

Steven: Also went for the pan asian noodles but got a virgin strawberry daquiri as his beverage (allowed). Had a second one on Scrooges beverage later

Scrooge: Went for the Prime Rib. Which I thought was lame, we were in Hawaii of all places. But he loves prime rib so...there you go. He chose the Agave Margarita to drink.

Me (Belle): Tuna Oscar and a Passion Fruit Mojito.

The reviews:

Kids grilled fish: This turned out to be at least 6 oz (maybe more) of grilled mahi mahi! Done to perfection. (I had a bite!) Simple, classic and quite good. Wall-E inhaled it.

Kids mac and cheese: It's mac and cheese. Enough said. LOL!

Pan Asian Noodles with Shrimp: These were HUGE and very delicious according to both the 9 and 16 year old. Also inhaled. I'm not sure they came up for air.

Prime Rib: Scrooge said it was good but that he regretted not getting the Mahi or should have ordered it M instead of MR. It was not as tender as he'd hoped for but the flavor was good. He loved the mashed potatoes and broccoli that came with it though.

Tuna Oscar: I had debated btw the tuna and the mahi. Our server recommended the tuna so that's what I got. OMG was it good. I mean amazingly good. We are fish snobs. We live in the PNW and have ready access to good fish and cook fish quite a bit so are pretty picky about it. It was amazing. Sashimi grade, cooked sashimi rare but blackened with some kind of polynesian blackening (it wasn't cajun but had it's own fabulous kick) served with fried green tomatoes, tempura-fried jumbo lump crab, and wasabi hollandaise. When I've had tuna oscar before it is with lump crab and is usually drowning in regular hollandaise. The wasabi hollandaise was just right, not too much and not too little. The tempura crabs were little bits of pure heaven. And the fried green tomatoes were nice and firm but not so green that they were hard as a rock (which I've had happen before).

Scrooge and I switched to a Bahama Mama with our entrees and they were pretty tasty.

For dessert we had...

Steven went for the Torte. He said it was amazing. It certainly was pretty!
WDW_090214_0318.jpg

Tink, the fondue which I did not get a picture of. It had fruit and macaroons and by the fact nothing was left, I'm sure it was good.

Goofy and Wall-E went for the kids sundae.
WDW_090214_0320.jpg

For myself, the sugar free apple stack. Apples with wontons, vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. YUM! Loved this, probably my favorite dessert as well.

WDW_090214_0319.jpg

Scrooge got a mocha (espresso beverage) as his dessert.

As far as our adult drinks went...

Agave margarita. Scrooge said it was good, seemed oddly disturbed by the fact it was served in a different glass than the picture on the menu. It wasn't "strong" enough for him. He was much happier with the Bahama Mama.

Passion Fruit Mojito. I really liked this, a little on the sweet side and you certainly don't taste any alcohol but that's pretty normal with a mojito. I liked the bahama mama as well but can't say I loved either drink enough to get again. While I was looking for something super tropical I never found that one that was exactly right the whole trip. I did have fun exploring though!

I would ABSOLUTELY eat here again. I would try Ohana's, I would have a drink in the Tambu lounge (almost did actually but then our pager went off). I loved the look and feel of Kona, some have commented that it wasn't themed enough or was too casual and we didn't feel that way at all. It was actually a surprisingly small restaurant for Disney, I thought, which was kind of nice and we enjoyed the ambiance, energy, service and decor. Our initial round of drinks took a while but other than that, no issues.

This is wonderful! Most of the restaurants that you went to are ones that we are considering for our August trip. Did the restaurant in Japan have fried rice? The menu I saw made it look like it only had steamed rice:sad2:

Now you are getting ahead of me! LOL Only steamed but there was SO much food it was a non-issue. Most of the gang didn't eat all of their rice. Not sure if Tokyo dining offers fried rice or not. Teppan Edo was, hands down, the kids favorite dinner. All four of them. :)

Great review of Kona, thank you. We are planning on dining there, have never been before, and you've reinforced our decision. :thumbsup2

Yum . . . that apple stack looks delicious! We have an ADR for Kona next month and I've been drooling over the menu. I'll probably end up ordering the exact same thing as you . . . Tuna Oscar and Apple Stack!!

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to go back!

Kona is one of our favorite places to eat. We go every time and never had a bad meal. Looking forward to hearing more.

Day 3 of our trip dawned slightly cooler but still lovely. Scrooge took off to go flying (literally) and after a light bfast at the cabin I took the 3 younger to the pool while Steven got to work on his homework that had to be emailed by midnight PST that night (I THOUGHT he was getting to work but events later showed us otherwise lol!

This was our "car" day so upon Scrooges return we all piled in and headed to DTD for lunch. Steven, our 16 year old rocker, REALLY wanted to go to HOB. While the menu looked fabulous it wasn't on the plan so I kind of kept hoping he'd change his mind. It all hinged on whether there was live music, or not. And of course, outside in the outdoor bar area, there was! So we ordered inside the bar and then went outside to enjoy the music. I think Scrooge and I might have enjoyed the music a little more than Steven did, it was all from our era! Some great HS memories plus the band was darn good. So was the food!

Scrooge got the pulled pork sandwich. I went for the mixed field greens salad (feeling short on greens at this point) but had them add the blackened chicken that they offer as an option on the Caesar. Steven the Crispy Buffalo Chicken Tender plate. The little boys split a pizza and for the life of me I can't recall what Tink got. Likely a quesidilla :) Lunch ran $60 OOP for the 6 of us not including cocktails which we ordered separately. Less than any lunch we did on the DDP. I had a parrot bay rum and coke, probably my favorite "cocktail" of the trip which was kind of funny and Scrooge had a beer but I don't remember which. Nothing on tap but they had a decent bottle selection.

The food was FABULOUS! My salad was appropriately spicy and tangy with the mix of spicy pecans, blue cheese and blackened chicken. Scrooges pulled pork, appropriately drippy and messy, and Steven's buffalo chicken appropriately burn your mouth hot.

WDW_090215_0242.jpg

Then after some shopping (notice Wall-E and Goofy's new hats, a pin for each as well though you can't see them...we started their very first lanyards after the Biergarten so the kids were a bit pin obsessed) it was time for a stop at Goofy's. These kids were WIERD! Not one of them wanted a make your own snack! Goofy opted for the large lollipop which of course never got finished. Tink for bag of bulk candy (which was NOT considered a snack credit). Wall-E for a make your own pixie stick, the 6" kind. The CM did not think it qualified as a snack credit (was pretty positive it didn't) but said she'd try it (and was super nice about it) and sure enough, it worked jsut fine! She was cute and happy that it did qualify and said she felt bad telling people all this time it didn't! I had a double espresso with my snack credit and Scrooge had a huge ice cream sandwhich. Steven was still full from his buffalo bonanza and opted to wait till later. Both Scrooge and I were shocked that he didn't want a Goofy's Glacier but...whatever!

WDW_090215_0243.jpg

Next...Park hopping our way to Teppan Edo!

the yummy yummy went through 2 full loaves of sweet hawaiian bread with the whipped macademia nut butter.

Sigh.

After a hop to DHS, which was so crowded at the front of the park it was surreal, we boogied over to Epcot for our 8pm reservations. We were really hoping to get in a little early so we could see illuminations at 9, having missed it 2 days prior. For those who don't know, and I didn't, Teppan and Tokyo dining are actually in the same building, on the same floor and you check in at one desk. The place was BEYOND insanely packed. People sitting on the floor with pagers waiting. Not a good sign at all. We checked in and Steven was thirsty so headed out to find a drink. He of course did this while I was in the bathroom and I was not happy with Scrooge for letting him. Sure enough, our pager went off while he was gone and of course, they couldn't seat us. Bye bye illuminations. We got him back but it delayed our seating at least 5 minutes maybe more. Overall I'd say we waited 15-20 minutes for our table.

We were seated with 2 women who were super nice and friendly, introducing themselves right away and were chatty the entire meal. We had one server who took our drink order and truthfully, none of us could understand her, it was awful. I felt really bad but I kept having to ask her to repeat herself. A different server explained the menu and took our order (no drinks yet) and we had the same issue. At this point I was getting a little concerned but figured it was teppan style so how bad could it be. Thankfully, upon drink and then chef arrival...that was as bad as it got. The rest of the night was just wonderful!

On the positive side, although we could hardly understand the server who took our orders, she made little rubber band things so Tink, Goofy and Wall-E could eat with chopsticks (as otherwise they are a disaster) and they loved that!

Our orders:
  • I had the steak and shrimp
  • Tink and Scrooge had steak and chicken
  • Steven had the chicken and shrimp

For the kids menu they could choose between a Teppan offering or a tempura. Both kids opted for Teppan Shrimp.

The dinner show, and our chef, was just an absolute riot. I've been to Teppan style Japanese Steakhouses many many times. For some reason, I had no idea that the entire cooking show would have a disney storyline to it!

I really should have video taped it. He would start out sweet and then there would be a slightly dark edge to it. Like Nemo swimming and then being axed (a shrimp). He turned every single thing he did into something disney, either in food shapes or story. We could hear others doing the same show but I think our guy was the best! Check out the pictures

The food was outstanding, everyone loved everything and ate it all! Steaks were cooked perfectly. We had all ordered them medium rare and they were nice and juicy. DH and I each had whatever Japanese beer they had on tap (might have been Sapporo) but we were a little surprised there were only 2 to choose from. The sauces were quite good. The little boys went nuts over the shrimp and the shrimp sauce. For me, I could have just eaten everyones mushrooms, I love teppan style veggies! The rice is your basic sticky rice, with soy on the side but it was quite good. 4 out of 6 of us ate all our rice.

I wouldn't have minded a bigger selection of sauces but I was the only one who noticed or cared. This was by FAR the kids favorite dinner, for food. For show they liked the HDDR the best and then this might have tied with PTC for "show" but for food, it won them over hands down.

Some of us skipped dessert, I think the kids had ice cream and I let Goofy have my chocolate ginger cake which he LOVED.
