Wouldn't it be easier to skip the busses and drive to the parks?

Another vote for the car. We call down to valet parking, which is $7 a day I think at the Deluxe resorts. By the time we're downstairs our car is ready. Off we go.

:listen: Take the Car! We always rent a car and drive to the parks. We usually stay in monorail resort, so use monorail for MK & Epcot, and sometimes even drive to Epcot. (if park hopping) It's so much easier. If someone get ill like we had happen, you'll be thankful you have a car!

We took a car on our first trip and i will probably never relay solely on disney transporation again. My kids are early risers, so we would get up, eat at the food court and then get in the car to drive to the park we planned for that day before opening time. It was so easy, not waiting around, leave on our schedule. In the afternoons we took a break, and then generaly went to MGM so the kids could run around in HISTK play area. We would drive up to the front of the lot to look for a spot, and generally found one quickly and pretty close up, since a lot of people did MGM in the morning and then hopped elsewhere.

We don't hestitate to use our car for some of the parks. In fact, I would never take a bus the water parks. We also usually drive to DTD and DAK.

As for the major parks, I guess I always assume that if the buses are inundated, then the parking lot will likely be a madhouse at those times as well.

Another vote for the car. I've done both and much prefer having a car. I often take the busses back to the resort for a mid afternoon break, especially if I have a good parking space :rotfl2: The busses are not as crowded then.

MK is a pain though, when you drive because you have to take other transportation to the park besides the tram. I've even thought of parking at EPCOT then taking the monorail over - anyone ever try that?

Thank goodness others prefer the busses or it would be even worse in those parking lots!

I've actually done that, though not for convenience. We parked at EPCOT and went to MK because we were hopping back to EPCOT that night and wanted our car there. The monorails run less frequently and it is a longer ride. Although, it is less crowded and if part of your Disney fun is riding the monorails, it's a nice ride.

We do it all the time because we have a big stroller.

Here's sort of a related question:

We're staying at WL when we go to MVMCP. Coming back to the lodge that night, is it better to wait for the boat to the resort or the bus or just take the car? I'll have my DS8 and my DS4 with me. It will be very late for them, which is why I am concerned about a long line waiting for the boat.

Thanks!
If you're not planning on staying 'til the bitter end of the party, then I would definitely take the boat back to WL. We've attended MNSSHP and MVMCP several times and each time we leave a bit before the party ends and have not had a wait to get back to the WL.

If you drive, you'll have to either take the boat or monorail back to the TTC, and then take the tram to your car, and THEN drive back to WL. IMHO, the boat is the way to go! :)

Have a great time at the party!! :teeth:

In your situation, I say for convinience is to drive your rental car or van. You have 3 young children with 3 strollers and your mom who will use the ECV or scooter. Are you renting a minivan? This will make life so much easier because you will have plenty of room for the strollers and you can rent a scooter off-site that you can dissasemble and put in the van.

No one in the family have to stand in line and wait for the bus. You come and go as you please. Everyone will have a guaranteed seat and will be comfortable. You can set the temperature in the van the way you like it and you can even have music in the van too! And if you ever want to eat off site, you can do that too.

Actually if you park in the handicap area at the MK lot there is no tram from the parking lot to the TCC. There are a few wheelchairs to use.
My advice for the MK lot is to either park in the regular lot and take the tram or park in the handicap area and use a wheelchair.
I agree with everything minnie had to say, except, I would take the bus to MK. The bus lets you off right near the turnstiles to get into the parks. If you drive, you need to get from your car to the TTC (no tram if you are parked in the handicapped parking) and from the TTC to the park, using either the monorail or the boats. For your MIL with a disability, the boats are a long hike and using the monorail involves climbing to the station up a long ramp (you have to get from ground level to the station on second floor level). If it is busy, they may make you fold the strollers.

We have been traveling to WDW at least once a year since 1987 with DD in a wheelchair and MIL and FIL who have some mobility problems and can't walk long distances. We usually take the buses because they involve less walking for FIL and MIL. In fact, the days we drive, MIL and FIL usually opt to take the bus anyway because the walk from the handicapped parking area is farther than walking from the bus. There are times when we have driven to the same park as they have taken the bus to and, even though we have the perception that we are getting there faster by driving, we have arrived at the turnstiles (or back at our hotel) at about the same time as they have (sometimes they beat us there).
The time you save by not standing in line waiting for the bus is used up when you are in line in your car waiting to get out of the park (as someone else posted, if the buses are busy, so is the parking).
We usually only use our van on days when we are planning to leave before the park closes or plan to go somewhere off-site after visiting the parks. As another poster mentioned, if you don't rush right for the bus after the parade or after the park closes, you will find a lot less people.

If you do drive, for all the parks, you will actually have the shortest distance to walk by using the regular parking and the tram system rather than parking in the handicapped parking area. If you park in the regular parking, you do have to have the strollers folded to use the tram.
As minnie mentioned, there is no tram service from the handicapped parking areas.
They do have some wheelchairs available in the area to use to get to the place where ecvs/wheelchairs can be rented, but there is no guarantee that there will be any wheelchairs available in the parking area or that the wheelchairs will be close to where you are parked. Some of the handicapped parking areas are quite large, so if you have to park towards the end, it will be a long walk.

If you plan to rent an ecv in the parks, it's important to realize that they are first come, first serve and there may not be one available when you arrive or if you park hop. If you are not prepared to push a wheelchair if no ecvs are available, then it would be best to rent an ecv from off-site. You can get more information on wheelchairs/ecvs from the
disABILITIES FAQs thread on the disABILITIES Board.

Also, if I read right, you have 6 adults and 3 children, plus at least 2 strollers. Our rental minivans have had seats for only 7 people.
9 people plus 2 or 3 strollers and an ecv will not fit in any minivan I can think of. You would need 2 vehicles to drive to/from the parks, as far as I can figure. One minivan plus one car should do.

With 2 vehicles, you will each have a guaranteed seat, as several people have posted, as opposed to the bus, where you might have to stand. If you plan on only one minivan though, you are going to be very crammed/cramped (not even mentioning the dangers of children riding on laps).
Putting 2 adults and one child with a stroller into a minivan is pretty quick (although you have to plan for time with the doors open and the air conditioning running full blast to cool it off before you get in). It may take quite a bit longer to get your whole party and strollers back into your vehicles.

Do resort guests get free parking at the various theme parks? I know the parking lots are very large - are there special areas of the parking lots reserved for resort guests?

I vote for taking the car. There's nothing worse to me than waiting in line for the bus at park closing. I enjoy being able to get in my own vehicle and having a seat.

Resort guests do get free parking, but nope, there's no special area to park if you're staying onsite. Interesting idea, though! ;)

We always rent a car and use it for some areas. We drive to Downtown Disney, and the water parks. The others depend on where we are staying. If we are at AKL then we use the busses for Ak but drive everywhere else. If we are at an Epcot resort then we boat to Epcot and MGM and drive to the others. It's also nice to have a car if you want to check out other resorts.

Always remember that if you are tired and don't feel like waiting for a bus you can always get a taxi. We have taken taxi's from Boardwalk to GF and it was about 11 dollars.

We usually use the buses, even with two strollers..If you will be renting an EVC in the park, and you drive, you'll have two walks to get to the EVC's in the park if you drive. Whereas, I think the bus stop will be one walk, and it might be a shorter walk (depending on where you park). Do you qualify of Handicapped plates?
We have driven twice - first, to get to an early PS at Chef Mickey's. We left the car there, and hopped on the monorail to get to Epcot. At the end of the night, we had to go all the way back to get to our car (remember from Epcot, we were over by Illuminations that night - ugh!)
The other time we drove, we had PS's at the BWK, so we parked there, then we headed into Epcot for EMH hours. Only this time we had the opposite porblem - we were at Universe of Energy at park close - and had to go all the way back to BWK, and then drive. Ugh!

Plus, I drive quite a bit, and driving at WDW can be very confusing. If you miss a turn, if can be a real pain to get back to the right place.

I suppose it depends where you are staying, and how much hopping you'll be doing, but generally, I think the bus/boat/monorail system offers more flexibilty, IMHO.

True that the handicap parking is right between the Polynesian resort and the TTC, but you still have to take the ferry or the monorail from the TTC which can be as packed as any bus.

It is quite a long walk from the handicapped parking area at MK to the TTC (at least for someone with mobility problems). There are no trams from the handicapped parking area to the park entrance at any parks.
The monorail station is up from ground level about 1 story and there are no elevators at TTC or at the station at MK (a long ramp).

Disney transportation is OK, but we always rent a car. I like the freedom the car gives you. Plus, you never have to worry about a full bus or multiple stops.

I was curious what the rates are for parking in each park per day?? Or do all disney resorts give some kind of free parking sticker????

thejj'smom ~ This is from allears.net:

"If you are staying at a Disney resort, at check-in, you'll be given a parking pass to put on your dashboard. This pass identifies you as a Disney resort guest, and helps you gain easier access to other Disney resorts as well as granting you free parking at the four major theme parks."

If you aren't staying on property then parking is $8 per day.

do you have a special badge for handicap parking, the reason i ask my wife has a badge here in the UK, so would i be able to use it for parking in the handicap lots at the parks
