Would you?

Danielle, I sympathize with the decision making, it is rough! DS is always saying how many students don't show up to class on any given day. Depending on which classes he has on a given day, he could spend a few days with the family and still only miss 1 or 2 days of a class.

Good luck, FWIW I would let DS miss college classes for a trip like that.

I did, but his break happens the week before Thanksgiving. We can't leave until black friday because of my and DH's work situation. His school returns to classes the Monday after Thanksgiving. Why can't anything ever work out simply and easily?

you mean things work nice & easy?? if there is a hard way for things to go - that is usually the way they go for me.

if he could be back on Wednesday - that is how I would do it but I would wait until after he attends classes in the fall & make sure he doesn't have a test or could talk his teacher into giving it to him early (make sure any assiments are turned in early) so add him last minute & make sure his plane ticket is refundable just in case

Because then a Mom's Plan would come together and we wouldn't have to stress!!!!

It's funny you said that. I was at the doctor last week for my headaches and he said "maybe reducing your stress level could help limit the number of headaches."

I wanted to reply "and maybe cloning myself so the real me could sit on a beach with 007 drinking margaritas while the clone did all the work at home would help with my stress levels too, but that's not happening either." :lmao:

FYI: we watched Skyfall this weekend and can I just tell you ladies, I'm now a HUGE Daniel Craig fan. Wow, wow, wow!

Thanks, it makes me feel better to know him going is at least a possability.

Oh, don't worry. Momma will be on his case about assignments and getting them done early (if that's a possiblity).

Does a syllabus outline dates for everything for the semester? Is that handed out at the beginning of the semester for each class?

I can answer this one ;) Yes the syllabus should outline everything for the semester. Including absence policy, tests, assignments, etc.

I also want to change my earlier answer. I wouldn't want one of my kiddos to miss a once in a lifetime trip. I think he could probably miss a couple days of class if he doesn't have anything "pressing" due.

Thanks for all the help, ladies. I have plenty of time to work this out, so I think we will plan with the hopes that he can spend at least a couple days with us. It seems to be a great compromise!

I think it sounds like a great compromise! does that mean you are planning on coming down this Thanksgiving ????? sure hope so!

Knowing that we are all pretty like-minded around here, I'd like to propose a question. It's one that has been going back and forth in my brain for some time now and I just can't come up with my opinion on it.

Here goes......

Would you plan a WDW vacation, knowing your college-age kid would not be able to attend?

Yes. and we are in June. Only my youngest is going. My daughter is almost 20 and I told her if she wants to go she needs to pay for herself.(I'm trying to get her to get a job). My 19 year old son doesnt want to go.

Oh when the Doctor said that (knowing my Drs. like I do), I would have said and what time will you be available to help so I can take a break? LOL

I wish, but my husband's family is dead set on waiting until next Thanksgiving and he wants to go with them this time. I asked the question so early because we are looking at costs and whether we will be able to afford it. I have to start saving now if we are even going to think about next year. Believe me, if there was any way I could financially afford it this year I would be right there with all of you! (I would certainly have a better time with my DIS sisters than with the outlaws :rotfl:) But with DS starting college I just can't do it this year. I will be living vicariously through all of you, though!

OT: Danielle,
Do you want me to send you my spreadsheet of college needs I made for DS dorm/college life?? (I based it loosely of DD's purchases but you don't have to over decorate for the boys)...

That would be awesome, Nan! Thank you. I would love it if I didn't have to do the shopping all at once and could spread it out over a couple months (and so would my checkbook).

That is what we did with DD.. we broke it up... helped tremendously and make note of items that you can give to others to buy when they call to ask what to get the Grad... My mom asks for a list and she gets that and their TV.. yes, Grandma has to be the cool one to provide the TV.... LOL

I will get that sent out to you in a few minutes!!!

We bought DD some many of the milk crates for storage... she actually brought that black ones home (I think we did 4 of each color, black and pink)...for DS to use for college... (we got them at Walmart for 2.97) and they are sturdy and actually have areas where they snap together so they don't shift when stacked!!!

Nan, thanks for the list! It will certainly help and he already has a few of the items. We re-did his bedroom last year with the intent that most of the stuff will go to school with him. :cheer2:

That is the best way to do things!!! That is actually what we are doing for DS16... He has bunkbeds...and they are do for new comforters... so my goal is to get 2 of the same so his rooms will match!! :)

Speaking of this.. I need to make his boutineer for prom... and I need to check my stash for a crystal adhesive Mickey or go buy a pack... (funny how certain topics trips the brain!)
