Would you take your child out 2 extra days to save $150?

With a second grader who isn't struggling, I wouldn't have a problem with it. We took my daughter out of school A LOT for Disney vacations when she was littler (she's 13 now). Last year, (6th grade) was the first year that making up the work was a struggle, and I did feel the missed time took a toll on her grades. Before that, the missed time didn't make a bit of difference, as far as I could see. That's precisely why we went Thanksgiving week in 2014 - to minimize school interruptions.

The only thing I would weigh is how much of a hassle it will be for you to coordinate whatever make-up work there is. For some people, the monetary savings would be worth the hassle; for others, not so much. But I wouldn't worry about your child falling behind or anything like that.

To be fair, my daughter goes to a school where kids are taking time off constantly, so I don't worry too much about the toll it takes on the teachers. I'm not being a jerk, but some kids spend a month out of the country (not kidding). It's just par for the course at this particular school. I think our Disney vacations are a blip on the radar screen for these teachers that are experienced with more lengthy absences. I am careful to make sure that any work is made up at the convenience of the teacher - before or after the trip - whatever is the teacher's preference.

Come to think of it - at that age - if the only trade off was less crowds (not even less money), I'd do it!

It's going to be 5 days now Sat to Sat but if we change it will be a wed to Wed but getting in late so not go in Thur so 7 days.

Social Aspect. There are only 40 kids in her grade and she sees them even in the summer all the time so I don't think she will have a probelm with that.

Missing 7 days of school is a lot. I would not do it.

2nd grade public school teacher chiming in......

I'd pull mine out without a 2nd thought. If fact, I have done it many times myself (and pulled myself out as well!).

My family has gone on many January & early May trips....over the years my kids missed more than 30 school days due to WDW trips. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. My oldest, DD20, is going to graduate college in 2 months...somehow none of those trips had a negative effect on her.

Go for it...have fun. I look at it this way - no child is going to NOT get into the college of their choice because he/she took a vacation in elementary school.

Flights are $150 cheaper if we go a certain day of the week. If we do that, our child will miss another 2 days of school.

That being said, she is only going to be in 2nd grade, is above her grade level academically (I'm not trying to brag, its just a fact that might help one's vote) and we are going the first month of school so everything is review anyway.

DH doesn't want to, I say we should. Prices keep going up. I've heard the best time to get flights is 6-8 weeks beforehand but can't take that chance since we will be locked in once our ADR's are set at 180 days. $150 doesn't sound like much but it all adds up. That could pay for our Aloha Show.

I would have put this on the budget board but I'm sure they would be bias to one side.

I would absolutely do this- no question in my mind

Since you asked-----missing school for five days, given that your child is a good student and young, is okay. Missing school for seven days for a vacation is too long for any grade.

I would stick with Sat-Sat. The Wed-Wed plan would put her behind two weeks of spelling at the very least, assuming she will have tests on Fridays. Vacations are unexcused in our district, and the most we've ever missed for Disney is one day per year (the Friday before our week of Fall Break). This fall we are doing Sat-Sun instead of the usual Fri-Sun because DD was too stressed last year, even though her teachers worked with us. It just isn't worth it to us to have our child uncomfortable with missing, so that will no longer happen.

Absolutely, no doubt. I took my Kindergartner and my 3rd grader out for 8 days in November. These are family memories you can't get back or replace. One day, they won't be joining you at all. Make the most of it now, when you can. They are in school 180 days out of the year. It won't hurt them to be in for only 172(in our case).
They bring all their work, so they don't get behind academically.
