Would You Take Someone's Pool Chairs?

A family took ours. We were staying at the Hilton Bonnet Creek and were floating in the lazy river. We had put our towels, books, and clothes on three chairs. We even had a float sitting at the foot of one. Periodically, we went back and visited our chairs, but while DH, DS, and I were all swimming, a large family came and put their stuff on DH's and DS's chairs and parked their stroller behind mine. They put the umbrella between my chair and DS's up and parked their stroller there. It was bizarre. It was like they thought by their squatting in our territory, they would force us out.

I went back to my chair, put down the umbrella, and stated that those three chairs were ours. One of the men said, "Oh sure, but I hope you don't mind a large family on either side of you." I said that was fine. Everytime someone from their family came down, they tried to claim DH's chair. It was weirdly rude. There were open lounge chairs everywhere, but they wanted ours because they were next to the pool. I thought it might be a cultural issue, but they were from Toronto (with a Passover group). So, I don't think it was cultural, just lack of consideration.

Would you do something like that or has this ever happened to you?

I don't know how it works at hotels, but on cruise ships you're not allowed to save chairs. If you're gone for more than a few minutes it is acceptable for someone to move your stuff and claim those chairs. Cruise line employees will even enforce this rule sometimes by moving unattended items themselves.

I would never take a chair that had personal items on it. I don't care if there's a rule about it....but I would like to be able to leave my stuff on a chair to hop in the pool, use the restroom or get a refreshment and return to that chair with my stuff still in tact so I would never do it to someone else. If there is just a pool towel laying on the chair in a heap, I would watch for a couple of minutes then use that chair if nothing else was available.

On our Carnival cruise, the announcement was constantly run on the big screen above the pool that no chair could be left unattended more than 40 minutes. After that time, belongings may be removed.

If it wasn't crowded, I absolutely would not do it. If there were not any chairs to be had, I'd probably think it was too crowded and I wouldn't want to be there anyway.

I can see the not saving chairs thing on cruises because the seating is limited in ratio to the guests wanting it but this is generally not true at a hotel pool.

If you want prime seats at the pool, get there early.

This!

Most give at least 30 minutes.

Chair-hogs are really bad on cruise ships, they put flip-flops, books, towels anything on chairs at the crack of dawn.

OP how long were you gone from your chair?

The title is misleading, as they aren't your pool chairs, they belong to the resort and you are using them. I don't understand the "these are mine because I put ny stuff on them" sense of entitlement. While you have your stuff set on chairs and are busy doing other things, why should others not be able to use that table and chairs? You were using them for storage, not for sitting. As for the "get there earlier" posts, some people(not accusing anyone here) hurry down when the pools open and attempt to "squat" tables and chairs for later use. This is an ongoing problem at many resorts.

On the Disney Dream people took all the chairs by 7:30am by leaving stuff on them. Not a single person was there, but every chair was taken in front of the movie screen.

I did once have a chair attendant on Labadee (Royal Caribbean's private beach) start to move all my things while we were about 20 feet away taking pictures in front of the water. It is a huge beach and they wanted the exact spot my stuff was in! It got very ugly until my stuff was back where I left it!

So a family can never go into the pool together? What happens when they get out of the pool and have no where to sit? I think a 30-45 minute policy is fair since it would allow people to enjoy the water but not take advantage of things.

People always get crazy about this topic. While we are not chair hogs, we will put our stuff on 2-3 chairs and return to them throughout the day.
*Note- we are a family of 7 and do not take up 7 chairs*
If you are not supposed to put your stuff on chair and swim then what exactly are you supposed to do with your stuff at the pool? I don't walk down to the pool in just a bathing suit. So my coverup and flip flops have to go somewhere and most places don't have a locker room. Even if they did I do not want to parade around a resort barefoot with no coverup on. So please tell me what you are supposed to do with your stuff as I am always perplexed when this topic comes up.:confused3

ugh....My kids keep asking to go on a Disney Cruise, and the above is the exact reason I've been holding off...Things like that would really bother me, to the point of ruining my vacation, and on a cruise ship it's not like we could just go somewhere else :(

But the other side is, so a family can never sit together because you are reserving the chairs even when you aren't using them? Why should that family care that you get out of the pool and have no place to sit, since you are willing to leave them with no place to sit? If there are more chairs than people, go ahead and reserve chairs. But if there are so few chairs that you're concerned there won't be one available for you when you get out of the pool, doesn't that mean other people need chairs too? :confused3

Exactly! We stay at the Beach Club whenever we go to Disney World. Stormalong Bay is huge, the water slide usually has a line. By the time you swim all around, do down the slide, etc. more than an hour can easily pass. I don't want anyone touching my stuff - what if they drop my phone or camera?

The problem sets in when a family of 7 takes up 7 chairs. When the g/f and I take my boys on vaca, we will take 2 chairs around the pool. Further, if there are a lack of chairs, we will condense down to 1. There are a lot of selfish people in this country with very little regard for those around them. Don't hog the chairs, don't be overbearing, be cognizant of those around you. That's how I roll at the pool (or on a cruise) and that's what I want my boys to see.

So I am lounging on a chair reading a book and want to hop in the pool for 15 minutes or so to cool off, what should I do with my things? Throw them on the ground? Hide them in the bushes? Get a large water proof ziploc and bring them into the pool with me?

The thing is, there ARE generally enough chairs. You just have to be willing to not sit right next to the pool. On the Carnival Dream (not Disney) all the chairs near the pool were supposedly taken, but when we went up a deck, we had our pick of chairs.

Put them on a table, if there is one. Or put them neatly next to the chair ("throw them on the ground' is a little bit dramatic). Or leave them in the chair but don't get all territorial if someone else needs that chair.

We do the same thing.

So it is okay to take up a table that someone might need but not a chair?:confused3 I also do not want my clothes on the ground. Besides, what if you don't see them and step on my stuff? :confused3
