For love of the field/position/mission or take a job for money?

What do you choose first?

I like my trips and sporting events and such, so I would take the job for money so I have money to enjoy my time off with.

Hey, fancy meeting you here instead of the Budget Board! :rotfl:

Totally money. As long as the job is bearable, I can enjoy myself the rest of the day and on the weekends. I would be miserable if I enjoyed myself 8 hours a day but couldn't make ends meet.

Hate to say it but $$$$. Anything I would love wouldn't sustain my lifestyle...

So far I have been working mostly for the money, but I don't really enjoy what I do any more. Once the contract I am working at the moment comes to an end I will be making a drastic career change! :goodvibes I have been offered a job as cabin crew, something I think I will enjoy much more than IT. Of course, the money is nowhere near as good initially, but the travel perks and discounts are fantastic, and the salary picks up after a year or two.

Saying that, if my DH didn't have a very well paid job I don't think I'd be able to do this - I'm not going to pretend that money doesn't matter to us... However we spend a very large proportion of our income on travel, so those perks should hopefully make up for a lot of the "lost" salary... :)

I was going to post this question over there too, but I figured it wasn't just a "budget" question.

Well since DH sustains my lifestyle, I can take a job for the enjoyment/passion of it, which is partly why I don't work! I did do some temp work at DH's old company but when he left, so did I. I enjoyed the contact with the people, the actual job duties were boring, but it was only about 5-10 hours/week. I got a call from a gal that worked for DH and has now started her own company looking for some casual help in her office. I might do that.

Depends on whther it's the primary job in our family, or secondary. Since my job is primary, it's all about money. If it were secondary, I would open my own small business or take on a job I was passionate about.

While taking a job for the love of it is the goal, it would still have to pay enough to live off of. It wouldn't have to make me rich, but I'd have to be able to make the house payment and put food on the table.

Of course, the ideal job pays well AND is a dream job! Why not shoot for both! :)

When I was younger the answer was money. No not so much. In 3 or 5 more years it will be completely the passion for the work. I think it depends upon where you are in your life.

Within reason, you have to enjoy what you are doing. I don't make a fortune, but we do fine. Our bills are paid, my kids are able to participate in activities. DS is going on a weekend ski trip in Feb. Both DSs will go to one, maybe two, scout camps for a week at time. We manage a nice vacation at least once a year.
I could make a lot more money & so could DH. Our house is more than adequate but not elaborate. Our cars aren't new but they are reliable. We don't have HD tvs, surround sound or an Xbox360, we do have 4 regular tvs, 3 VCRs, 2 DVD players & my kids have a GameCube. I am home when my kids get home from school. We have amble health, life, homeowners, auto insurance.
For us, that equates to success and happiness.

As long as DH can continue to support me in the lifestyle with which I've become accustomed, I would pick the work over the $$$.

I took this job because of the flexibility in the schedule. If there is traffic, I turn around and go home. Snowing? Take the day off! Sometimes I work 20 hours a week, sometimes 40 - it's up to me. I get paid hourly, whereas most of my attorney counterparts are on a big salary, but I'm happy to make the nifty hourly wage they pay me in exchange for never having any real pressure to show up. :goodvibes The job is as boring as watching paint dry, but it's also easy.

DH had to decide between 2 jobs. One paid better, but didn't have a health insurance plan in place or a retirement plan - it was a new company with big contracts, but nothing set up. The other one is with a big, established company that paid less out of the starting gate, but had great benefits - health, dental, retirement, profit sharing/pension plan, vacation, family assistance, tuition reimbursement, etc. DH chose the 2nd one because, in the long run, it was a better choice for his career and there was a better chance for growth within the company.

We don't live a big spending lifestyle, so we could eat the cut in pay in the short-term.

since the stresses of my prior job came close to killing me (2 strokes) and now i can't work period, my attitude is find something you enjoy doing and then find a way to support yourself doing it.

i loved what my job was about but the environment i worked in terrible. i would have done much better to take the education/skills/training i had and sought out another venue to use them. so many skills are transferable to multiple jobs, i hate the thought of someone staying in a terrible situation.

my dh loves his chosen profession (IT) but his work environment is not supportive, poorly run and results in most of his time spent in tedious pushing of paperwork. i've encouraged him to look at how he can use his skills in other fields (if he enjoys the training aspects of his job consider going into teaching, if he enjoys working with a specific vendor explore what opportunities they might offer).

while financial support is a consideration, you have to weigh what is "taking" from you in return for their financial compensation.

For me it is the passion for the job. I quit my horrible job in finance that paid very well to pursue teaching. I am going for my MA in Education right now so for me..money is secondary.

really can't say the money cause the pay stinks. I enjoy working with the children, and plus must admit it makes my life easier since I am off when DD is off.
