Would you take a 5 month old in Feb or an 14 months old in November?

Hi all, havent been over in the WDW boards for a while, i have had a difficult start to the year, my mum passed away  on 31st December after a long battle with lung disease, she was my world :sad1: and we hadnt gone away for more than 4 nights in the last 2 years due to her illness so we were never away for long.
Now i feel i need and deserve a holiday as its been a tough few years and i am so glad mum is finally at peace  that i feel i could actually enjoy a holiday without worrying about her. She was very clear that she wanted life to go on and for us to make happy memories with our first child who was born in Sept princess:.

So my dilema is do we go away to wdw in a few weeks when out DD will be 5 months or should we wait until November when she will be about 14 months old??? Or am i completly out of my mind thinking about taking a baby to wdw and we should just pop over to DLRP for a few nights where we could just load everyhting into the car??? My oh thinks i am nuts wanting to take DD on a flight so young and thinks it wouldnt be much of a holiday as it would be to much hard work. Have any of you taken a young baby to wdw and how was it, what did you do about sterilising as we havent started weaning yet? How do babies cope with the warmer weather and is it worth it or should we leave it a couple of years??

Any help or thoughts would be appriciated as i am just so stuck :headache: on what to do, i wouldnt want to take her to Paris at the moment as the weather is so cold  so we would probably be looking at March time but part of me just wants to get away and have a holiday.

I'm sorry that you had a difficult start to the year. I hope 2010 is a great year for you.

I took my daughter, Isabelle, to WDW when she was 5 months old. She is now 5 and has returned from her 6th visit to WDW. Each time we visit she enjoys/appreciates something new.

At that age your daughter won't remember the trip, but she will be very easy to care for and the flight will be easy. It's you that needs the holiday and, in all honesty, 9 months won't make much difference to her enjoyment.

I would go now, knowing that she can go on all of the rides without height restrictions and enjoy all of the parades/fireworks. My DD loved looking around at that age and, if she fell asleep in her stroller, we would either carry her onto gentle rides, which she could sleep through, or take the opportunity to look in the stores and enjoy the atmosphere.

I didn't need to sterilise but I've read that others use the microwaveable bags to sterilise bottles.

Whatever you decide to do, have a great time making memories :)

ETA It wasn't hard work taking a baby. We had a wonderful, relaxing holiday.

I say go in February as it will be a bit cooler that month for the baby:thumbsup2

Sorry to hear about your Mum - I definitely think you deserve a holiday.

We took our 15 month old son in July last year and it was fantastic!!!!! he was great on the plane and he was old enough to recognise and love some of the characters. It was very hot but he was fine as long as we took loads of breaks, had his buggy shaded all the time and he drank loads of water and fans. I did think we were a bit mad when we booked it (as did all my friends) but don't regret it one bit. The only downside is that I know he'd love it EVEN more now and so we've gone and cancelled the holiday we did have booked and rebooked for Disney this summer!!

At 5 months you'd probably not have major probs but at 14 months she'd love it!!

mo x

Really sorry to hear about your Mum. As you say, at least she's at peace now.

Can't help with what age to take your daughter but you sound as if you could do with a holiday sooner rather than later. We started going to Disney with our boys after I lost my Mum and Dad within 9months of one another. Having something to look forward to makes life a little more bearable at difficult times.

Whatever you decide, have a fantastic time.

We have taken our DD at 9mths (March not very hot) and 15mths (Very hot!). Both times she enjoyed it but the second time for me was better - she wanted to see the characters and recongnised them in the parades. She was a lot more interactive.

I don't regret taking her at 9mths as it really helped her development and we all had a wonderful time.

She coped fine in the heat and on the flight.

You would be best to take cold water sterlising tablets if you haven't started weaning but TBH at 6mths DD was drinkng from an unsteralised sippy and as she was exploring and putting her hands on the floor and in her mouth I wasn't that hot about sterlising from about 4 mths!

Are you planning on going back again after this? That might sway my decision. If you will be goign again next year I would go in feb. If it is going to be a few years I would wait until November :goodvibes

I took my youngest at 9mths and it was fantastic - Although he won't remember it now, he definitely enjoyed it while we were there and we have some fantastic memories.

I would go for Feb, purely because I think a 5mth old baby is much easier to manage than a mobile toddler - but either way will be good and you deserve the holiday  - happy planning with whatever you decide!|!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

thanks so much for the replies, i am thinking the consenus is a baby is easy to manage but a todder would get more enjoyment. I will have another think and maybe see what sort of prices i could get for a last minute deal. thanks :thumbsup2

we are taking our twins at 9 months this sept and cant wait

all ages work....the 5 month old obviously won't enjoy it, but you will...
the 15 month old will be able to interact, though she won't remember it at all..

we've gone to WDW at all ages - the youngest when DS was 6 weeks old, and just about every age on up from there...

we've always enjoyed ourselves...

Hi,

Nice to see you around again.

I would go when the child is 14 months if choosing between the 2.
Didn't really enjoy the flight when Joshua first went at the age of 10 months, despite the fact it was an enjoyable holiday - photo on the right below refers.
If you have the option to go when baby is slightly older I would definitely do that.

Weather in February is very unpredictable , often on the cool side and should be more ideal for you in November, when it will still be a nice comfortable 70 degrees.
If it was me it would be an easy decision as to be blunt I think 5 months is too young but I can understand your dilemma.

ive taken mine at those ages and most in bewteen, babies are easier on the plane at 5 months, they just sleep throught its a breeze, and either age would present probs with ajusting to time diffrence bit of a pain with babies~ leads to lack of sleep, saying that Izzy was good this year with it~ better than any of my others.

im sure when ever you choose to go you will enjoy it.
sorry to hear about your loss xx

We took Freyja last August when she was 9 months old - it was all terribly easy, flights etc and she enjoyed herself. We are going in Summer again when she will be 21 months old, she is currently 15 months old and seeing her now as she is I would advise you to wait if you are making a choice between the two.

She enjoyed herself at 9 months but I know that she would LOVE it right now at 15 months - either way, she will have a great time!

oi woman, i didnt say you were nuts! :lovestruc

and you definately deserve the break. im defiantely more for doing it than not at the mo. i just dont want the bubs to have any probs.

Hey Julie - Its Lisa (Simon's Wife) :)

You need to stop worrying about it my lovely and just book the holiday, you know you want to. DLP will be horrible as its half term week and the french, well don't get me started on them!!

From what I have read on people's threads here and on other boards, a 5 month old is easier to work with than a toddler. As for someone mentioning in a post above about her not enjoying it, I completely disagree, I think she will love all the characters, colours etc. You guys will be having a great time so that will affect her too and she'll love it.

I expect the next post to be that you've booked it!! :)

well.............

its booked!!!! Woohoo... let the planning commence :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

same here lisa! it will be lovely to finally meet you both!:banana::banana: Now i need to get planning, i normally have 8 months or so to prepare for florida, but my ticker says i have 27 days!!! woohoo, :cheer2: better get shopping as Isabelle only has winter clothes that fit her.

It will be so much more fun planning now as you only have less than a month to go, you will be excited all the time until D-Day. We've been planning around 9 months and the time drags on soooooooooooo much!!

I wouldn't buy Isabelle too many summer clothes, the clothes out there in the the department stores in Florida Mall are so cheap and they have some lovely stuff too.
