Would you spend $2500 on your dog? (Good Update Pg. 3)

No way would I spend that kind of money.

Yes, I've been in the same position before. Once as a kid and once again a few years ago. Both times we chose to have the dogs put to sleep. My Mom was heartbroken to make that decision when I was young given that the dog was mine. But I got over it just fine. Having a new puppy in the house a few weeks later made all the difference.

The dog we had put down a few years ago was getting on in age. I simply could not justify spending those kind of bucks to keep her alive. Trust me, this was a very special dog to me. Not at all an easy decsion. But it was the best thing for her and it was the right call for my family.

You know how much I love my kitties. If it would save their life, I would do it in a heartbeat.:D

wow bridget...poor puppy!! what vet do you take the puppy to? i'm not sure of any vets around here who take payments. i know the one we go to does not...

I'd try to find some sort of way to have the procedure done. Find a different vet, borrow the money...something. I don't think I could live with myself knowing my puppy died and I didn't do all I could. :( Tough decisions for you to make for sure.

I would spend it if I could. If it happened right now, I would have a very hard decision to make...

Hope all turns out well

I would spend the money, but, I dont have children to feed or clothe. Much of my decision would also be based on the age of my dog and what the prognosis would be. That said, this is a decision that only you and your family can make. Whatever you decide is what is right for you.

No one can tell you what to do.....all I know is that I just asked myself what would I do if I was in your situation, and the answer is I'd do it. Period. Perhaps I'd try to find a vet with a different payment plan first, but the bottom line is yes, I'd do it. My dog is a member of my family and I love her to bits!

Bridgit,

Here is a webpage that has vets listed according to which state they are in. Maybe this will help you find one near you that is willing to work with you regarding a payment plan.

I am keeping your pup in my thoughts and prayers!! It is a difficult decision and usually things happen at the worst time!!

Oh and yes I would find a way to get the money for the surgery, although it sure would be difficult right now. Our golden Maggie is definitely like one of our kids!!

Absolutely I would, without hesitation.

Last year alone, I spent in excess of $5k at the emergency clinic & at Auburn Univ for 2 separate incidents with my pugs. The first, Molly got very sick and we found out she only has 1 kidney. Thought there were very serious liver problems but that turned out ok.

Then... Peanut had an eye puncture injury and had to have a corneal graft.

It was a very expensive year but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I agree with the poster who said to put it on a low interest credit card.

This is a life we are talking about...........there is no doubt in my mind that I would do what is necessary. In fact, we have an ongoing huge vet bill (which just got even larger yesterday). If you were the puppy, wouldn't you want to have the opportunity to live a long and happy life??????

Most vets don't provide payment plans these days because they take Visa and Mastercard. You might look into that possibility for payment.

A specialist vet who does not have an ongoing relationship with the owner is more likely to get stiffed for the bill - not that you would do this but too many people end up not paying even if they had the best intentions at the time.

My 12 year old dog is having major ear surgery tomorrow. I don't know what it is going to cost as I didn't want to know until after it was over.

yes I would spend that , I have spent that on many a horse , and cat in my day .

I am so sorry you are having trouble with getting the Vet to take payments . I work at a 24 emergency vet clinic and We take Care Credit it is just for vet care . Maybe you could ask them if that would be ok , it is a charge account so the vet would get thier money right away and you can make payments. The 1st 6 mos is intrest free .

I guess I'm in the minority. I wouldn't spend it on a puppy. I would pray that the other means worked. If I had the dog longer and I knew I could do it without affecting my family I would. I would use vacation fund money and even retirement savings in that case.
You should try to find a vet who will work with you on payments. Vets must know that for many people that would be a huge amount of money to come up with. I think it's very sad that a vet would refuse to take payments. I know they get stuck sometimes but unfortunately that's a cost of doing business. For example we have a heating and air conditioning company. DH would never leave someone with no heat because the bill would be too big. He would find some way to get their heat running. Most of the time these people pay their bill. Sometimes they don't. But at least we did the right thing. What my vet would do is take a series of post-dated checks stretching it out over 6 months or so.

I haven't on a dog, but I would.

I have, twice, on our kittens Sage (who we'd only had for a month) and Blaze (at 2 years). In both cases we lost them, but I'd do it again.

I don't think you're crazy.

Even though I wouldn't I don't think someone is crazy if they do. And as I'm typing saying I wouldn't I haven't been in that situation and if I was I might change my mind. I spent approx. $600. on my Maine Coon Kitten who I only had for 1 week. I had determined that if those treatments didn't work I would not go further. But my finances were strained at the time.

Well, they took another x-ray and it has moved....we'll see if it keeps moving. I gave them authorization to do whatever they need to do if something bad would happen overnight. I'm just going to get a personal loan from the bank if need be. She better lay off the contraband from now on though! ;)

That's great, MosMom! I'm thinking good thoughts for you :)

I would have absolutly spent that money on my dog.

I had a German Shepherd - Sampson - who, when 5 yrs old, was diagnosed with lymphnoma. I had to put him to sleep within 24 hrs after his diagnosis because his cancer was so advanced that there was no helping him. His cancer came to a shock to our entire family because he never really acted sick, just a little different, of which I contributed it to him becoming older.

If my vet would have told me that there was a procedure to help him get better I would have done it regardless what the cost. Even if I would have had to take out a loan, I would have done the procedure. My Sampson was my first born, my son, my protector, my furry friend that I could always count on to make me smile. When I had to put him to sleep, it was the most devostating thing I have ever had to do in my entire life. I have never greived for someone, or something, as much as I did over the death of my dog.

I would never wish this grief on anybody. I hope that everything works out for your dog, your family, and whatever decision that you make. You need to do what is best for your family regardless what other people may tell you - this is a very personal decision.
Good luck and God Bless!!!
