and if so, how would you protect yourself?

I'm writing under a pseudynom (sp?) so not to offend the Member. This is my situation. The member only has one post - re points to rent. They gave me their name, phone number and address which matches up in my search. I searched their DVC property under orange county and it's there but they just bought it in September 2009. They have never rented before but want to this time because they need to take a different trip. The Member has a good profession as I can find it online. We called through DVC; however, she was already on line with them when I was patched in. The reservation person said all the right things that I know to be "disney" based upon my many, many trips. They were able to end of last week get reservations at BLT for friday and sat night of thanksgiving weekend. they gave me a reservation number that sounds right; but of course I can't call DVC myself and check it.

Would you rent from this person? If so, what if anything would you do to protect yourself? We would be doing a contract which is the standard DVC contract used here, with some changes I made.

Thanks for your insight!

If I recall correctly from when I rented DVC sends confirmation, I'd ask them to scan and email that before I pay any large amount of $.

Good Luck.

Everything sounds good so far. If you still don't trust though, you shouldn't rent at all.

i'd agree with this completely.

you should be able to check your conf number here:

www.mydisneyreservation.com/dvc

but the DVC owner still owns the reservation until you check in...if they wanted to call and cancel it out from under you after making the reservation with MS and after you check to validate the conf number, they have the ability to do that. if you're kinda high strung about the loss of control, renting may not be a good choice. (saying this as one who didn't like the loss of control as a renter and bought a small contract with DVC.)

I've rented before with great success. the only thing that bothered me about this Member was really the lack of posts. Now, however, I used the link (thanks so much!) and this comes up:

"The information provided does not match our records. Please try again or call (800) ********. If you are under 18 years of age, you must have your parent or guardian's permission to dial this number."

I've put in both the Member's name as the guest and mine.

So, maybe I was right. I'm not allowed to call this number, correct?

doubtful i'd ever rent a reservation from anyone (although i have rented to other members and transferred points into my account to complete a res;)). While remote, the thought of showing up for vacation & not having a room would keep me awake @ night...just the way im wired.

you've done impressive legwork to verify the DVC member, bonus points for tracking down their profession.

:confused:im not sure what else you expect the member to do to make you feel better about the transaction:confused3or what additional confirmation u could expect @ this point.

the tradeoff of being able to rent points at such a low $ amount is the trust factor involved. Perhaps you should just book a resort reservation if you aren't willing to absorb the element of risk.

the reservation should be under your name, but you would not be able to call the number...

definitely get a copy of the confirmation to verify correct spelling of your name, dates, etc. then re-try the website.

Try entering your name in all caps, sometimes that works better to pull up the reservation. It is also possible the system is being flaky, or the CM typed your name incorrectly. You should receive a hard copy of the reservaton confirmation, either a photocopy or a scan, from the member after they receive it. It can take up to 2 weeks for a US resident..and international mail, even to Canada, is problematic.

Based upon your posts so far, nothing is sending up an alarm, and I think the owner has done everything they could so far to indicate it is a legitimate transaction.

I only rent from someone with several hundred posts over a couple of years and I stay away from new owners. The possibility of an accidental mistake is too great with a new owner. Many don't know how to make their own reservation, so how can I expect them to make mine.

As far a checking ownership, if the someone wanted to rip you off it would be very easy and there is very little that you can do about it.

Same here! I check their post/thread history, gives you insight on what kind of people they are.
Instead of renting I prefer to have points transferred to my account so that I can make my own reservations.

If you are this concerned about renting from someone you don't know, you don't need to be renting a reservation and need to deal directly with Disney. Save yourself the grief.

But after rereading your original post, it looks like they have done everything you asked and provided you with the reservation you needed, for the time you needed, for the resort you needed. It sounds like a done deal at this point.

After all that work, you are going to just dump them? Sorry, but you may find it difficult to find someone else to rent from if this is how you treat a nice member.

Personally, I joined this board originally to post a rent/trade thread. Until that I primarily "lurked".

I am an extremely honest person and never did it cross my mind to screw over someone else and cancel it before the travel date.

That being said, I did have quite a lengthy contract that I had both sides sign and notarize. I've used it several times now and I think it puts both parties at ease. They have a signed agreement to sue me with and vice versa if either of us didn't hold up our end.

Several of those renters have emailed me time and again to see if I have any extra points because they felt so comfortable renting from me.

I guess you have to take a chance, and if you feel nervous, don't rent or insist on a notarized contract like mine.

thanks for everyone's advice. I've rented before - at BWV with great success, and I have AKV Kidani already for my christmas trip and the person I've been dealing with for that has been lovely. This person has too; it was just the lack of posts (the other two members I dealt with had numerous posts). I also was a little nervous because other members I asked about renting points from had no success getting anything at BLT for my time period (we are in the 7 months) and they did. Now, however, the inability to plug my reservation in the above link has made me nervous. I've spelled my name every way imaginable, attempted my first name attempted the Member's name in every fashion, even tried other properties just in case - no success. On the other hand, I put in my other reservation for AKV I put in just as a comparison and voila, there right away. Maybe I'm letting the fact that I wanted BLT so darn bad cloud my judgment.

Ask the renter to send you a screenshot of the DVC Members website page where your vacation details are shown.

It should look something like this (I blacked out personal informations and the DVC phone numbers):

Good Idea, Brandis!!!

Also, I bet if you call Member Services just to verify the reservation is still in place, they might confirm. I know they always verify information, but if you can at least verify the names on the reservation as well as your address, then they might at least give you a yes/no on the confirmation.

Please do not suggest people renting points to contact member services. Members pay for those calls, and how many times does it have to be noted that member services does not deal with renters.

Bottom line, if you are not comfortable with transaction, then don't proceed.

Otherwise, get a good deal but what goes with that is sometimes some uncertainty.

Your choice, good luck.
