Would you let your child dye their hair?

Someone on the ear-piercing thread commented that she dyed her four year old daughter's hair blond because she (the kid) didn't like the dark roots. Would any of you let your kids dye their hair? Let me start - never in a million years would I let my kids do it!

Depends on what age your child is.. 4 yrs old .. Nope.. My daughter is a teenager and I have allowed her to do it..

I started dying my hair at 13. My mother had no problem with it. I wouldn't dye my 4 year old's hair.

Nope. But I was a Colorist for 8 years & I put Redken Shades-clear-on my nieces(6 & 10) its helps them with preventing Clorine damage.

I thought I'd be one of those "never-in-a-million-years" moms. But about a year ago DD13 asked for highlights (not all over color). I balked at first, but finely did them for her. We touch them up about every 8 weeks. Actually, the first time I did hers I had a little left in the bottle. My DD10 asked for some highlights, too, so I put exactly 5 streaks in her hair, left them in 10 mins, and then rinsed it out. It was very subtle, but you could see it if you were looking for it.

I let my beautiful Korean born son dye his hair ORANGE! :scared1: The phase passed and he is now in college with his black hair! I always pick my battles.

I never knew this about Redken Shades Crystal Clear!! Thanks for the info. DD's hair is light enough to worry about pool water.

No. I'd consider highlights for teens but never all over color. For a 4yo, never. And the roots will keep coming back in dark...

I wouldn't allow my young children to, no. Not only because I'm trying to keep them young and innocent and not caring that much about their looks to the extent that they would want to make such a change, but also because their hair is very fine and I'd be afraid to damage it.

At some point as they grow older I'd allow it ... not sure when that would be.

I would allow the hairdye. You can always color it back. I have been dying my hair since I was 13. WHen the principal wanted to expel me when I wa 16 for dying my hair...my mother's comment was "when my kid does poorly in school, is disrespectful or causes a problem, then come talk to me. If the worst she does is to dye her hair, I am truly lucky."

I would allow it for a teen but not a younger kid. But if someone else chooses to allow it, I wouldn't be bothered.

My 10 year wants highlights. So many of the girls at her school have them! I'm so surprised because I only highlight my own hair every few months because it's so darn expensive! Anyhow, I told I would let her do it when she gets to middle school, and she'll have to save her money and pay for it herself.

Boy, yes right after I got his mullet cut, ear pierced and signed for his tattoo. Seriously some parents are so ridiculous.

A teen girl with highlights I don' think I would have a problem with. A grade schooler, no right up there with the other white trash things to do to your kid. No thanks.

I let my DD13 get highlights and when DS was 17, he dyed his hair black(was dk brown). I wouldn't let younger kids, teens yes and then still nothing extreme. Thank goodness my kids aren't so inclined. :sunny:

I don't have kids but my answer would be absolutely not. If my teen daughter had a job and was going to pay for them and maintain them herself, then sure.

I was allowed to dye my hair when I was 15 or 16. I dyed it purple. ;)

I wouldn't allow a child to dye their hair though. I can barely afford to get my own hair dyed! lol.

I would...my 6 year old right now has the con air pro color highlights thing and makes her streaks red or blue o nteh weekends and then it washes out for school on Monday morning...I don't let her wear them to school...but once she is older in middle school if she wanted to put some color in her hair that would be fine....my friends parents wouldn't let her sister dye her hair when she was 13 so she "dyed" it by mixing cherry kool aid with a small amount of water and did it herself...boy did that ever color her hair and that stuff does NOT come out. My god daughter started dying her hair when she went into high school..it was purple, red, black (she is normally blond) and I think it was blue at some point......

Two or 3 years ago my 15yo son wanted to bleach the tips of his dark brown hair and I let him do it. It was the popular thing to do at the time and looked good in his hair.

This last summer he asked to bleach his hair again and I told him he could before finding out the details. This time he meant all over, though, which is what he did. I think it looked pretty stupid, especially at first and since he did it himself (at least it was cheap since he did it), but it grew out fast and once it started to grow out and wasn't all over it didn't look so bad and I didn't mind it too much.

The good thing about boys, assuming they have reasonably short hair is that it does grow out quickly and if they get tired of it they can just get a buzz cut and it's gone.

I've let my DD highlight (do it yourself), but her hair is naturally highlighted--the one good thing she got from me, so really there is no need for it. I'd have a problem if she wanted to dye it some strange color and wouldn't have allowed it when she was younger, but she's 18yo, so all bets are off (but her hair is beautiful naturally highlighted strawberry-blonde, so hopefully she won't).

I would not let children dye their hair, though, unless it's washout color.

Thats funny you mention White Trash and thats what Dexter is eating White Trash :lmao:

My Mom owns a shop and growing up I was always getting perms hair colored )she chalked it up to trying new chems.) I think she wanted a girl :rotfl2:

DD12 is coloring hair (blue highlights) for the summer but it's been real hard to tell her no when she wakes up around it everyday (live over shop).

I think at 4 she acting like mommy is talking and not trying to be a individual and that's not right .

But then I watch all those baby pagents and can't believe the brainwashing of those poor children that think they are having fun crying because they didn't win at 4 years old.

I can't believe this topic was posted today. Just last night I let my 11 yo DD up one highlighted blonde streak down the front. I had some left over from doing her Dad's hair. She has been bugging for a couple of years and I finally gave in. I think it look darling on her.
