Would you keep a child home if he was badly sunburned?

I can't believe the school! Or me for that matter. :(

DS told me that the fifth graders would be helping with third grade field day today. It never occurred to me that they would outside in the sun all day long and that the teachers wouldn't pay any attention to what the sun was doing to the kids. The school never sent anything home, at least nothing that I ever saw.

DS came home with really red legs and arms and it's hurting him tonight I can tell. I feel so guilty for not sending sunscreen but it never occurred to me that this would happen. :(

DS just has his own field day tomorrow so he wouldn't be missing any schoolwork at least so I'm tempted to keep him home. Aarghh!!! I feel so guilty.

If he is already burned and then going to be out in the sun again tomorrow I would keep him home.

I hope he feels better soon. :)

There are several after sun lotions that would help. See how he feels in the morning. My youngest DD loves field day and would really want to go. My older DD would have wanted to stay home.

If he does go make sure he wears loose / soft clothing and sun screen.

This is about the worst time of year because the sun can play so many tricks. It was cloudy / cool this morning and just hot this afternoon!

I would vote to keep him home too. It would break both his and my heart, but he would be much better off OUT of the sun.

Yes, the sun is tricky right now isn't it? Oh well, I'll let him decide and slather him with sunscreen if he wants to go. Bleh. :o

Do you have any vinegar on hand? How about some red cidar vinegar? A good vinegar bath will take out the sting from the burn.

My kids' school tells the kids to bring sunscreen. My ds has field day tomorrow and told me he didn't want to bring any sunscreen because he and a friend were going to share his friend's sunscreen. Hopefully he'll find the sunscreen I hid in his backpack, just in case.;)

Poor guy! I know all too well how he's feeling. I also think that sometimes a burn feels even worse the next day. The skin tightens and, makes it hard & painful to move (i.e. field day would probably be out anyway). :(

If he does go, I would probably send a note to ask that he be kept shaded and, maybe only be a spectator and cheerleader.

Cooling aloe gel feels soooo good and cool!

FYI, many schools will not allow teachers to give sunscreen to children. Our school doesn't.

I would probably keep him home unless you are going to attend his field day and keep an eye on him to make sure he keeps in the shade and puts sunscreen on often. If his burn get to the point where it blisters, it will be painful for a long time.

:(

No, he's passed out thank goodness. Sun will do that to you. I remember a few doozies I had as an adult.

I already had the sunscreen out for his own field day but I didn't send it today for the third grade field day. Oh well, live and learn.

:sunny: OUCH:sunny:

Too many painful memories of my childhood:( I would probably keep him home. You can give some tylenol/advil for the pain. Cool aloe gel feels good too. I feel for him.

I'd keep him home as well. Even with a bunch of sunscreen on he doesnt need to be in the sun anymore til his burn is gone. Its so hot here anyway, and the sun here in Texas can be brutal.

keep him home. Sun block wouldn't do him any good tomorrow since he is already burned.

Place compresses of vinegar on the burns, give him baths with baking soda or oatmeal and slather on the aloe. Advil might be better for the pain since it is a mild anti inflamitory too.

Ask him how he feels in the morning. If he says he feels OK, then let him go if not keep him home. I find that usually my DD will tell me if she feels to ill to go to school. I would definitely give him a note for his teacher telling her to keep an eye on him and if he needs to call you that you will pick him up. My DD feels more in control of the situation this way. Alot of times, unless the child is running a noticeable fever or vomiting the teachers ignore them when they say they don't feel good, but if you send a note and she can see visible signs of the sunburn, she should let him call to go home. Also, you might send some aloe along with his sunscreen. It can help to take the sting out if it becomes bothersome. Pack it in a lunchbox with an ice-pack so it stays cool and will offer some relief. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon!

I thought we were the only people in the world who were pickled when sunburnt! Your post brought back the feeling and the smell in a heartbeat!

OT, sorry about the sunburn! They are just miserable! Gently hug him for me and let him rest is my vote!

Years ago my DD got burned at field day...she had such a reaction that her face was swollen...poor thing could barely open her eyes (she did have sunscreen with her, but didn't use it). It was a horrible reaction that lasted for days and ended up with hives all over. Keep him home if you think more burning is possible. Hope he feels better soon!

So sorry your little one got burnt so bad Linda. I hope he feels better today.

Forgive me for not understanding, but why are you upset with the school?

Has your child ever had field day before? Has it been outdoors in the year's past? It seems to me that the school did not do anything wrong. It's not their fault your child did not wear sunscreen. Now, that said, I do hope he feels better. It is a bummer to be sunburned!

So did you keep him home? I probally would have let my son decide, as it would be his field day that he was missing. Hope he is not hurting too much. In my family we always used aloe for sunburns.
