Would you give your SSN over an intercom at a bank drive thru?

I got my little $62 paycheck today.
I only work limited part time hours as a pharmacy tech for a major retailer. Pay is low.

I decided to go through the bank drive thru. I've had an account with the bank for over 10 years.

The employee didn't know me. She asked for my complete address over the intercom. I said it. She then wanted my social security number. I told her I wasn't going to give my SSN over an intercom. I would be happy to give her my photo ID if she'd send the tube back. Her response? No. It's too busy to do all that. She just needed my SSN. I told her I'd walk into the bank and take care of the check.

I walked into the bank and waited for my turn.

The same bank employee took my ID. She came back and told me she needed 2 more forms of ID, proof I had an account, and my social security card.

She already had my driver's license. I showed her my checkbook. I showed her my debit card from that bank. She wanted to see at least 2 major credit cards. I don't carry my SSN card with me.

She told me it would have been a lot easier if I'd just have given my SSN like she asked. I told her that giving my SSN over an intercom that can be heard by everyone at the bank drive thru and inside the bank wasn't safe. She just rolled her eyes.

She told me the next time I try to cash a check there at the drive thru to please give a deposit slip, photo ID and 2 other forms of ID.

She cashed my check, and I left.

I can see making sure your customer is who they say they are, but wow.

Would you give your SSN out over an intercom at a bank drive-thru?
I thought asking SSN for any reason anywhere out in the open is not a good thing to do.

YIKES!!!!!!!!! Major overkill by the teller!!!!!!!! I would have said something to the management...I am sure others had the same problem.

NO I wouldnt give my SS over the intercom in a drive thru!!!!

You did the right thing. Maybe a call to the branch manager is in order especially since you are a longstanding customer.

No I wouldn't. Good grief. The worst we have had was when I had a check from my mom's estate that they held. This bank is sounding a little paranoid. I mean if it was for several hundred, maybe, but $62??

I've never heard of this. The most they do is check my one ID and verify I do in fact have an account with them.

And no, I wouldn't give my SSN over the intercom.

I wouldn't have given my address over the intercom never mind my SS#. I can't stand when businesses ask for all this info and expect you to repeat it out loud for all to hear. I don't give out any personal info out loud. If I must give an address or phone, and there are a lot of ears nearby, I will write it down, making sure I get the paper back. Call me paranoid, but I had someone years ago get my personal info and hijack my visa card. This was before identity theft was as big a problem as it is now. I still don't know how it happened to me. This employee sounds a bit nuts to me. I thought that your SS# is one of those bits of info that the bank protects unless it is absolutely needed for the employee to do her job. I would talk to her supervisor, just in case. It sounds to me like she was gathering info she didn't need. You did the right thing.

Few weeks ago a new WaMu opened up in the area, I decided that it was so close I would stop by and open an account. The person "helping" asked for 2 forms of ID, a Major credit card and a utility bill with my name(not spouse). I did not have everything with me and I refused to share my credit card numbers with him.

I went home opened the account online and went back 10 mins later and made a deposit with the account number created online. He asked how I did it, I declined to tell him.

Why is it that an ONLINE creation of an account can be so much less demanding????

I work at a bank, and I can tell you I would NEVER ask for any info over the intercom, unless you are in the first window, and I need your account number. Since you write checks, your account number is no secret really. We only need your ID. People get mad enough at me for asking for ID, I can't imagine SS#! The only reason I would ever ask those is if there was fraud showing on the account... :sad2:

I would also NEVER do this. I can't even believe they asked for such info. I would be scared that the teller was trying to pull something. It's not unheard of for bank tellers to steal money or identities.

I would do as other posters have said and make a quick courtesy call to the bank Manager. If I were the Manager, I would want to know about this.

She wanted TWO other forms of ID besides a photo ID? Sheesh, at my bank, I know the tellers and they never even ask for my driver's license anymore. And, no, I would not have told Nosey Nellie my SSN.

I did write a $40 check at Oak Express for an item they had to order for me. The woman insisted on 2 forms of ID. For $40. For an item I would not even receive for 4 weeks which is plenty of time for the check to clear. Yeah, I was a bit annoyed. :teeth:

I would never give out my SS# over an intercom. I won't give it out for companies that don't need it. We upgraded our phones recently with Cingular and the guy wants our SS#. I don't think so. Explain to me why you need it. He said they didn't they are just supposed to ask for it. Needless to say I did not give it to him. But I assume plently of people had. And for no reason.

It sounds like she was just making it hard on you because you wouldn't give your SS in the drive thru! Especially if that was all she wanted there and wanted all the rest when you went inside. I would talk with the manager about it. I'm a teller and that sounds like alot if you are a customer with a long relationship!

Nope, I wouldn't have given it to her. The only thing my bank asks for when I cash a check is my account number.

I am a Drive-up manager and I only ask for a drivers licence and thats only if the signature on the check doesn't match our files. If we did need any other info, we give a piece of paper for the customer to wite it down on. We discourge any kind of info being given out over the intercom.

Nope, I would never give my SS# out over an intercom. I had a similar experience at my bank. The teller asked me to give my SS# at the desk, and I didn't want to say it out loud with people around me. She said, "no one will hear you, just give it to me." It was a winning attitude. I asked for a pen and paper to write it down, and she rolled her eyes at me and tossed me a scap of paper and pencil. I really hate going in there every time.

I thought the same thing! "All" she needed was for you to verbally tell you your SSN via the intercom when you were in the drive thru. Then when you came in, it was SSN, & two forms of ID in addition to what you handed over (?). Plus a dose of attitude on the side? Oh no, that wouldn't do. I would've talked to the manager about it. She shouldn't have asked for your SSN over the intercom. And it does seem like she was giving you a hard time. I'd still talk to the manager about it. It's not too late in my book.
