Thanks so much for the input everyone, and for reassuring me that it's not just me that needs to "lighten up" and let grandma do what she wants.

The poster who mentioned the child with the bowel blockage due to gum...see, that's the kind of thing I'm afraid of, not so much the mess. Maybe that's the example use to try to get MIL to stop.
