Would you ever buy a home which had a *murder* in it?

Having someone die in a house...and being murdered in a house are 2 completely different things! At least in my mind! I would never buy a house that was a setting of a murder!EEWW! CREEEEPY!

I have a friend whose DS died in their home. Everytime I go to their house, this is the first thing I think about, a get a very sad feeling being there. I don't know that I could get past the sadness of such a horrible thing happening in a home I wanted my family to be happy living in.

True. People die of natural causes, and accidents in homes all the time, and no one ever seems phased by it. If they were, there'd be a lot less home sales.

This is DD's biggest fear--she's freaked out by stories of ghosts, etc. She kept asking me if anyone had died in the house we just purchased. She was still doubtful even though I told her that the original owner (built in 1966) was alive and well and retired in Florida. She asked me suspicously, "Did you actually talk to her?"

My house is over a 100 years old, and an accidental shooting that resulted in death happened in our upstairs. For the most part, I never think of it, this thread actually made me think about it. Also, what is now our TV/family room, used to be the room where the family that built/owned our home had all of their viewings/wakes for family members. That was a tradition years ago to have loved ones "resting" at home before burial.

We are the only other family to own this house after the original owners/builders, so maybe we can leave "our' ghosts of some sort behind for future owners..LOL:D

I don't think that would stop me. I wonder how many of us live over battlefields or scenes of accidents that we'll never know about.

That said - when I was about 12 we rented a home for a year.
I felt so sad that year every time I came home. I was OK outside the home. There was something very very sad in that house. We knew a Doctor had lived there at one time - there were offices in the basement area. We found out later he performed illegal abortions. My intent is not to make this a debate. I just could feel sadness. That made me believe that you can feel past experiences. I don't know why but I do know I felt a sadness I'll never forget.

No way would I buy a house that a murder took place in. Too creepy. I have to drive by an apartment complex where a murder happened and it freaks me out to know that someone new is living there.

Our house was built in the late 1800's. I have no idea if anyone was ever murdered in it, I sure hope not.

That's very true. A friend did some digging in records where we used to live because she had some weird feelings in their house. Turns out the property the house is on used to be an old Indian burial ground. :earseek:

I guess I should have elaborated more on my earlier post. The friend's DS that died was 12 years old, and committed suicide by shooting himself. For me, I don't think I could buy a house where either occured. Just me, maybe I am just paranoid.

DH's cousin got a great deal on a house that had a murder or suicide or murder/suicide---can't remember which one. We've been over several times and I've never "felt" anything. They have made a lovely home there, but it's still a sad story.

I live near Gettysburg, PA... everyone knows about Gettysburg. They have "ghost" tours and reinactments. It is really cool! Like I said earlier, I would DEFINITELY buy a house that has major history. I LIVE for this stuff!

I don't think I could. One house we rented....gave me the willies. I would NOT be surprised to find out someone was murdered there.

We sort of did. The teenage son of the last family who lived in my house hung himself from a tree in the front yard. It was disclosed by the seller in the real estate forms. The tree is no longer there and we had the house blessed soon after moving in.

The house next door to me sold after a murder had happened there (trust me I live in a very quiet neighborhood! It was a shock)
I was told they don't HAVE to tell you. I thought they would have but they told me no.
However, the family that bought this one lived in town when the murder took place and knew all about it.
The wife told me that because it was a FIL who killed his SIL for abusing his DD, she could live there and be OK with it. It happened in the front doorway. However, she said if it had been a break in/random murder that she would have never bought it.
BTW, we had NO idea that physical abuse was happening.

I *think* sellers are required to tell. I could be wrong, but I think they have to mention things like this.

If the seller or an agent of the seller (realtor, attorney, etc.) knows about the event and is asked then they must disclose. Honesty is obviously required in every transaction. If they aren't asked however, they don't have to disclose. Not sure if this is a state or federal law however.

We had an unfortunate event in our neighborhood a few years ago. It was an elderly couple and after too much drinking the man accidently shot and killed his wife with a shotgun. He called the police then shot and killed himself.
It was vacant for about a year and was bought by a young family. Not long after they moved in it was Halloween and the man brought his young daughter to our house for trick-or-treat. He introduced himself and told us where he lived. He then started waving his arms in the air and said, "you know, the dead people house". :teeth:
